October marks the 10th anniver-sary of Cyber Security AwarenessMonth. Do you know how to protectyour identity online? Better BusinessBureau has joined with the NationalCyber Security Alliances STOP.THINK. CONNECT. campaign to
educate the public about online scamsand how to respond to them effective-ly if they do occur.
Every consumer who uses digitaltechnology devices at home or in theoffice needs to play a part in cybersecurity. If you open a virus-riddenemail attachment at work, for example, you could infect your entire companyscomputer network. SavvyCybercriminals have become expertsat luring people into clicking danger-ous links or opening phony emailattachments.
The Department of HomelandSecurity advises consumers to:Stop. Before you use the Internet,
take time to understand the risks andlearn how to spot potential problems.
Think. Take a moment to be cer-tain the path ahead is clear. Considerhow your actions online could impactyour safety, or your familys.
Connect. Enjoy the Internet withgreater confidence, knowing youvetaken the right steps to safeguard your-self and your computer.
In addition, BBB recommends thefollowing:
Click with caution. Only openemails, attachments, and links frompeople you know. Use anti-virus soft-ware regularly and enhance email fil-ters to block threats. Watch out for
unsolicited emails that contain mis-spellings or grammatical errors.Dont believe what you see. Its
easy to steal the colors, logos andheaders of an established organiza-tion. Hover over any links to seewhere they lead. Malicious emailsmay look identical to legitimate web-sites, but come from a differentsender.
Safeguard your information.Dont reveal personal or financialinformation in an email, and do notrespond to email solicitations for this
information. Be wary of any urgentinstructions to take specified actionsuch as "Click on the link or youraccount will be closed."
Verify email requests. If you areunsure whether an email request islegitimate, contact the companydirectly using information provided onan account statement, not informationprovided in an email.
Keep software updates current.Having the latest operating system, software, web browsers, anti-virus pro-
tection and apps are the best defensesagainst viruses, malware, and otheronline threats.

Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderfulpatients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoingsurgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayersfor a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind ourreadership about one of the many important reasons to see
their dentist regularly.According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be
42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral orpharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths.
Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head andneck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% ofcases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chanceof spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cellcarcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makesoral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appearsas a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancercell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as aresult of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repairthemselves.
Where can oral cancer appearin my mouth?Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue.
It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arisefrom many types of tissue in the mouth including salivaryglands and lymph tissue.
What should I look for?Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does
not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesionon the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually palecolored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An earlywarning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or ared patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues ofthe mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when thetumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongueproblems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain maybe a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless.
How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not?A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion.
However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benign
and malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A non-invasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out thepresence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method fordetermining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present isthrough biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopicevaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous.
What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determinedto be cancerous?
Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical
incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area inquestion. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can alsobe used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, andsize of the lesion.
What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer?People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are
at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are peoplethat have been diagnosed with HPV or Human PapillomaVirus; which is a s exually transmitted disease which MichaelDouglas recently associated with his throat cancer.
Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposureto radiation may also be at higher risk.
We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for yourcomplimentary oral cancer screening. This is a disease thatcan be caught early and treated with a high level of success. We look forward to meeting you. At Hampton Dental weperform an oral cancer screening every time we meet a newpatient and at each re-care visit!

Technology is streamlining the hiring process.Managers use it to eliminate useless -- and costly --interviews and prescreen candidates before bringingthem in for in-person interviews. And job hunterscan use technology to distinguish themselves fromthe pack.
By using a Web-based video interviewing system, hiring managers can view video clips of jobcandidates, & share them with other decisionmakers. Employers can even compare the responses
of candidates to the same question, further levelingthe playing field. The candidate benefits as wellbecause on camera, personality, enthusiasm &passion come through, making the case moreconvincingly than words on the page of a standardresume.
Candidates need to become savvy aboutprojecting themselves on camera. The Web is filledwith advice on how to perform well in a videointerview. Step 1 is to dress the same as you wouldfor an in-person interview. Another tip is to lookstraight into the camera.
Virtual resumes now resemble social networkingprofiles with photographs, active URL links &videos. Online portfolios consisting of images, video, text and audio come to life, showing what a
candidate can offer the employer. "One of the mostcommon requests we're getting these days fromemployers is for students to have their resumes &portfolios available online," says Debra Pierce, director of career services at Miami InternationalUniversity of Art & Design.
No doubt, the Internet has enabled job seekers topromote themselves through web-based socialnetworking sites like MySpace & Facebook.
Employers are also using a quick Google search
to see if there is any positive or negative contentonline about an applicant. For job seekers, outrageous or unprofessional pictures or videos on asocial networking site can be a deal-breaker for aprospective employer. Therefore, job seekers need tounderstand the nature of these social networkingsites and the repercussions they may have on their
job search if not used appropriately. In this new environment, both sides of the job-
hunting process benefit. In fact, the days of mailinga paper resume to an employer (which never yieldedgreat results) may be over. Then again, a verycreative resume kit that includes the high-techelements (including a CD with a video & links to anonline portfolio) delivered via snail mail, may be oneway to stand apart from the rest of the pack.
