From the Deputy Principal It is with immense sadness that we write this newsletter following the news about Mrs Rhonda Cochrane. As I went around the school yesterday to inform our students it was clear they had remembered many things about Rhonda, most of all her message to Aim for the Best. There were many stories about her kindness and how she welcomed new students to school. She would have been delighted to hear the memories of our students. Our school meant so much to her, and she meant so very much to all of us. It was indeed a privilege for the staff at Wavell to have worked with Rhonda, her presence will be greatly missed. Uber Eats The school is unable to accept deliveries from Uber Eats. If you need lunch for your child Wednesday-Friday, please contact the tuckshop. On Monday and Tuesday, parents will need to ensure a lunch is packed. Thank you – Salvation Army The school received a very welcome donation of long pants, socks and swimming caps from the Salvation Army. A very big thank you to the Salvation Army, and to our parents, Stewart Barratt and Kimberley Schimke for thinking of our students. Parents can access these items on Friday morning. Please see Alison, at Wavell Wake Up Coffee. Uniform Shop Opening Hours The uniform shop is now open Mondays from 8:00am to 9:30am. To purchase any uniform items at other times, a new website is up and running www.whssuniformshop.com.au. School Photos 21 Wednesday and 22 Thursday August Envelopes to purchase photos have been sent home. The envelopes are pre-named with your child’s name and date of birth. Merit Awards Congratulations to the following students that received a certificate on parade.

Curriculum News Supporting your child’s learning.

Developing your child’s literacy and numeracy skills are a key focus of the curriculum. This is because literacy skills development form an essential platform for your child’s future success. Your child’s teachers provide a range of lesson experiences to challenge and stimulate their learning while supporting them to meet their individual needs in becoming confident learners. The learning at school builds on the learning you do together at home. The development of students' literacy and numeracy skills is a very important component of the Australian Curriculum from Prep to Year 2. This is because literacy foundations for further learning. Student's literacy skills are mostly built in English and their numeracy skills in Mathematics, but both are reinforced and strengthened through all their learning.

In English, students listen, read, view, speak and write in a broad range of activities. They are explicitly taught strategies for beginning reading, writing and spelling. They learn how to speak and write in different situations and read a range of texts for different purposes.

In Mathematics, students develop a sense of number, order, sequence, pattern and position using their environment. They are introduced to mathematical symbols and language so that they can investigate and solve simple problems, explain their ideas, pose questions and analyse and make sense of information.

There are a number of resources available and activities that Parents and Carers can do each day to assist your child with literacy and numeracy. These resources are also available in a range of languages: Arabic, Chinese Madarin, Dair, Farsi, Filipino, Greek, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Malayalam, Punjabi, Samoan, Sinhalese, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Thai, Vietnamese, Click on the link below and select a language.

Library News Book Week Book Week Dress Up Parade will be held on Friday the 23rd of August at 9am in the hall. Dress up as your favourite book character and remember to bring along your favourite book. The library will have lots of exciting activities throughout the week to celebrate.

Students in Prep-2 have been enjoying all of the short-listed books in the Early Childhood category. Our older students in year 3-5 have been listening to the novel Brindabella – short-listed for Book of the Year – Younger Readers category. The story is about a lonely boy living in the Australian bush rescuing an orphaned joey. It looks at themes of friendship, belonging and freedom.

We have some amazing recycled library bags coming in. It’s not too late to make yours. The information note can still be collected from the green box at the library desk. Please make sure your bag is sent to the library by Wednesday the 21st of August, ready for the parade on Friday.

Up Late at the Library As part of Australian Reading Hour on Thursday the 19th of September, the library will be open late! Come in and enjoy a bedtime story with the whole family from 6pm-7pm. As part of this night, we will be holding a Book Swap. Watch for further details on these events in the next newsletter.

Behaviour at Wavell Heights SS

In weeks 5 and 6, Wavell Heights State School’s behaviour focus stems from the whole school rules: Be Safe and Be Respectful.

Week 5 – Be Safe, Be Respectful – Take turns, invite others to play, follow the rules.

Active play and participation in sports can provide excellent opportunities for children. Not only do students need this exercise f or healthy physical development, they also need it to help them learn i mportant social skills such as sportsmanship.

To encourage inclusivity and sportsmanship while playing games (In lunch breaks or lesson time) students should try - Making sure that everyone that wants to play a game is included - Include other that are sitting alone or looks upset, ask them if they are ok and if they would like to join the game - When playing a game (e.g. touch football, handball soccer) make sure that everyone is aware of the rules and

follows the rules sensibly - People exemplify sportsmanship and sportsmanlike behaviour when they play fairly and follow the rules of the game.

- Let everyone have a turn in the game – pass the ball to all team members, allow everyone to have a role etc. - Congratulate all teams in the game at the end

Week 6 – Be Safe, Be Respectful – Use the bathrooms responsibly

At Wavell Heights State School, we are proud of our school grounds and facilities. Unfortunately, there have been incidents this past year where students have not been using the toilets and bathroom areas appropriately. Students will be focusing this week on:

- Going to the toilet only when needed during class time - Washing hands after using the toilet - No playing in the toilet areas in class time or during the lunch breaks - If students see others using the bathrooms inappropriately, report it to an adult

It is important that we keep the toilet and bathroom areas a safe and hygienic place for all students to use.

We look forward to spotting students following thes e rules throughout this fortnight.

P and C Update

The winds have arrived so it must be Ekka time. To celebrate we are running a special meal deal on Friday 16 August see below for more details. We have been busy transitioning the Uniform Shop to P&C Uniforms who are working on restocking the shop with all the sizes. We appreciate your patience during this transition time. You are always welcome to drop us a line [email protected] if you have any feedback.

Volunteers A reminder for new parents that the P&C is made up of volunteers, we are giving our time for the students and school to make it a better place. We welcome your help in any area including:

- Tuckshop is a valued service for the children. We need regular volunteers to ensure prices are kept low and we can maintain the high standards. We can be flexible with the times you can volunteer and you can help from as little as an hour to do food preparation, order filling, over the counter sales, cleaning, stock and money counts. There are options to suit between 8-3pm Wednesday to Friday.

- Events are run from time to time and we would appreciate your help at these. - Raffles is another way we fundraise. Can help organising and running raffles or donating goods? - Wavell Wake Up Coffee and Second Hand Uniform Shop is run each Friday from 8:15 until the end of

parade. Alison would like someone to assist on those days she is unavailable. - Marketing , engagement, finances and other administrative elements. Are you a whizz at creating flyers?

Do you have an interest in finance and can help with setting up and running accounting packages? Do you like organising events or activities? Then we’d love to hear from you.
