Waverley Library December January 2013/14 Waverley Library Award for Literature 2013 Waverley Library applauds all the authors nominated for the 2013 Nib Waverley Library Award for Literature. We are pleased to announce that the big winner of the year is Gideon Haigh for his wonderful Shane Warne biography, On Warne. Congratulations also to all the remaining shortlisted authors, Matthew Condon, Michael Fullilove, John Hamilton, Hannah Kent and Helen Trinca. Thank you to all who voted in our inaugural People’s Choice category. We received over 200 votes with The Price of Valour by John Hamiliton receiving the most and taking out the prize. Not only does John win a prize, so do two lucky voters, chosen at random from all those who voted for the winning book. Well done to David Moses of North Bondi and Richard Brazier of Grass Valley, Western Australia who both win a set of the shortlisted books and a voucher for a wonderful meal at Bondi Icebergs Club. BURIAL RITES Hannah Kent In 1829, the last public execution in Iceland took place. A man and a woman were beheaded for a murder on a remote farm. There being no prisons in Iceland, the condemned woman had been held for the winter before her execution at a farm where she’d lived as a young girl, guarded by the farmer’s wife and daughters. Burial Rites tells the story of that winter as the landscape of northern Iceland casts its spell. Over a glass of wine and nibbles, safely confess your ignorance and admit your limitations through this truly unique experience. Participants will receive a free copy of the Little Book of Ignorance – a playful workbook to explore one’s ignorance in more depth after the meeting. Free admission, wine and cheese provided. Alison Gilbert is a digital artist showing “Going Home”, a mix of artworks reflecting memories, emotion, intuition and fantasies, which blur the lines between what is seen and what is experienced.
