Editor’s CornerIn this issue we present the emerald in the Croatian crown - Gorski Kotar – a part of Kvarner region, an area of outstanding natural beauty that has historically linked continental Croatia with the sea. The Lujzijana and Karolina roads that cross this land date to our Roman and Austrian-Hungarian past and are now joined by the Zagreb-Rijeka highway that cuts through Gorski Kotar and allows a quick and safe access to its many tourist attractions. You simply need to exit the highway and in a few kilometres you have arrived.

Gorski Kotar welcomes you to lush forests, the Risnjak National Park, nature reserves, walking paths and cycle trails, natural landmarks, caves, lakes, festivals and celebrations, a fine local cuisine that offers wild game dishes and other delicacies. Whether you are looking for a short adventure or a longer stay Gorski Kotar offers enough variety to satisfy all your senses and is only 30 kms from the sea.

Welcome to the Croatian mountain plateau surrounding the region of Kvarner. Gorski Kotar shares the Pannonian region of the Mediterranean and the Dinara highlands in Slovenia – extending from the N & NW to the SW.

Originally called Processus montanus by the empress Marija Terezija the name of Gorski Kotar has survived many historical changes, forms the largest portion of the Primorsko-goranska County and is a very hilly area.

This unspoilt region is celebrated for its ecology, varied wild life, dramatic views and fresh pure air to refresh visitors. The high altitude village spas use the mountain air and stimulating climate for health cures, rehabilitation and wellbeing.

In this issue you will discover the reasons you need to remain in Gorski Kotar just a little longer and to return many times regardless of the season.

Dear visitors and friends,WELCOME TO GORSKI KOTARGreen Heart of Kvarner!

Every visitor who becomes acquainted with at least part of the beautiful natural environment and valuable natural heritage of the County of Primorje - Gorski Kotar (KVARNER) will undoubtedly agree that this is a very special and uniquely preserved area. In addition to the unquestionable diversity of its wonderful landscapes, the area also abounds in an extremely rich biodiversity that can hardly be matched.

The County of Primorje - Gorski Kotar (Kvarner) is located in the western part of the Republic of Croatia and comprises an area of 7.990.57 km2. The county’s varied landscape encompasses three large geographical parts – islands, coasts and highlands – each with its own specific features. The mountainous parts of the county include the forest areas of Gorski Kotar with the highest peaks and mountain ridges: Bjelolasica 1.534 m, Risnjak 1.528 m, Snježnik 1.505 m, Viševica 1.428 m, and – bordering with the coastline – Obruč 1.376 m. There are 73 peaks in the county higher than 1.250 m.The natural environment in Gorski Kotar is well conserved and luxuriant. Its varied habitats are home to some very valuable species that are very different to those on the coast and islands.

But it is precisely this variety and unusual contrasts that give this region its special status within the wider European context. This extraordinary biological diversity is a result of the fact that, according to palaeontological findings, this area and its immediate surroundings were refugia for flora and fauna during the last ice age, which explains why there are so many relict and endemic species living in Gorski Kotar today. These include rare land mammals, large predators (wolf, bear, lynx and otter), rare and endangered birds (golden eagle, honey buzzard, eagle owl, three-toed woodpecker, capercaillie…), and the valuable fauna of the clear rivers. The Kupa, the cleanest mountain river in Croatia, is home to a number of fish species that have been declared endangered in Europe (grayling, brown trout, huchen…) and several rare and endemic invertebrates.Due to the mainly karst features of the region, special attention should be given to particular geomorphological and hydrogeological phenomena, including underground areas, unique endemic cave fauna and water networks. In addition to their species rich flora and fauna, natural and cultivated karst landscapes are of particular scientific and cultural importance.

LynxThe Risnjak* National Park includes most of characteristics offered by the town of Delnice and the area of Gorski Kotar.

The park covers over 60 square kilometres and encompasses a major part of the Risnjak and Snježnik mountain range together with the spring and upper part of the Kupa River. The area was named as a National Park in 1953 at the suggestion of the notable Croatian naturalist, Professor Ivo Horvat, and extended to cover the area of the Snježnik massif and the spring of the River Kupa in 1997.

As a result of climate, geology and rock formation the park is rich in a wonderful variety of flora and fauna and is characterised by its luxuriant forests - representing an eco-system that has flourished in this area since recorded time.

Risnjak allows us to experience a “lost world” of forests – divided into 14 forest ‘communities’ - that continue to offer homes to 3 great beasts of European wild life: the wolf, the bear and the lynx.

Way to Croatia11

Page 12: Way 16 Gorski Kotar

The magnificent white-rock peaks of the Risnjak mountain range soar above the high green forests. Views from the summit at 1528 m above sea level – looking out over the bay of Kvarner, Istria and the Julian Alps in Slovenia – are unforgettable.

The J. Schlosser Klekovski mountain lodge at the base of Great Risnjak offers shelter and the chance to rest. The rocky summit of Snježnik, surrounded by high meadows comes as a pleasant surprise and is easily accessible. The plants living in this area are accustomed to the harsh climate which ranges from extreme heat in summer to wailing icy winds in winter. The view from 1506m is one of the most impressive in all Croatia.

The spring of the Kupa River and the immediate area have been protected as a natural treasure 1963. The spring is an extraordinary natural hydrological feature and remains an unsolved mystery of Karst landscapes. The natural well is one of the deepest and longest in Croatia and, at 321m above sea level, forms a turquoise lake of enchanting beauty. If you are not inclined or unable to ascend mountain peaks and journey through forest trails there is always the Leska Educational Path.

Special reserve [Skrad]

Vražji prolaz & Zeleni virVražji prolaz (The Devil’s Passage) has a special place among the natural sights the Skrad surroundings abound in. One of the most beautiful Croatian canyons, full of wild romance. Through a narrow, barely 2 meter wide canyon, between a hundred meter high cliffs, the Jasle mountain creek fights its way through wildly murmuring. Over it, standing on supports cut into a live cliff, there are galleries and bridges the visitors use to pass through. There are steep cliffs all around, while deep down, under your feet, there is a loud, foamy creek.Zeleni vir (The Green Vortex), 345 m, is a powerful spring at the bottom of a shallow cave underneath a 70 m high picturesque, layered cliff down which, like a white curtain, falls a creek, splashing the entrance with thousands of drops. It got its name after the emerald green color of the water of a small lake whose source one does not notice inside the cave. Its waters, encompassed by a small dam, flow into an underground canal leading towards a hydro power station built in 1921, the first hydro power station built in Gorski kotar.

At the end of the Devil’s Passage there is another attraction, a cave called Muževa Hižica. Tourists can explore up to 200 m inside – any further requires experience and climbing gear.

Flora: spring heath, grey hawkbit, Alpine butterwort, daisy star aster, stoneflies, caddisflies, fi salamander, brown trout, bullheadFauna: bear and many other forest mammals, three-toed woodpecker, black woodpecker, eagle owl, viviparous lizard, Horvath’s rock lizard, Alpine (black) salamander Vegetation: interesting thermophile forest of hop hornbeam and winter heathSpecial features: bridges in the canyon of Vražji prolaz

To visit the reserve, start from Skrad, a small town on the old Rijeka-Zagreb road. Skrad has train and bus stations and a narrow, steep, winding and partially asphalt road will bring you to the Alpine hut at the entrance to the reserve. You can also start from Brod na Kupi (the state border!) and reach Zeleni vir along an asphalt road that leads to Skrad. In that case, do not forget to take the turning for Zeleni vir at the hamlet of Planina Skradska.

Protected natural heritage [Delnice]

Japlenški vrhResidents of Delnice are fortunate to live in a town surrounded by many natural treasures. One is the forest park Japlenški vrh. The forest always offers something new to discover and is an experience that never disappoints. Spring brings the blossoms; in summer the smell of cyclamen fills the air; autumn hosts all kinds of mushrooms and in the winter you can try to track animal prints in the snow.Flora: dwarf honeysuckle, spurge laurel, martagon lily, cyclamen, blue-eyed Mary, deadnettle, mosses, great variety of mushroomsFauna: large number of central-European forest birds and mammals; the bear occasionally visits the areaVegetation: beech forest with fir, small areas of mountain meadowsSpecial features: historical ski jump and vantage point offering the view of Delnice

Horticultural monument [Vrbovsko]

Severin na KupiVisit the park by the castle at Severin na Kupi - the park and the old Frankopan castle are inseparable. Sadly they bear the ravages of time but the view over the river Kupa remains magnificent, and you can reach its shores using easy paths or more challenging trails that pass through the forest.

Protected natural heritage [Lokve]

GolubinjakThe Golubinjak Park Forest, an exquisite gift of nature, offers relaxation for both body and soul in the shade of its centuries-old forest. Maintained walking trails will lead you to the so-called “Queen of the Forest” – a gigantic fir tree over 250 years old or the “Door to Hell” – an opening in the cliff. You can reach the Golubinjak Park Forest by car following the sign for Golubinjak while driving along the old Rijeka – Zagreb road, and turning right just before the crossroads leading to Mrkopalj. Flora: Alpine rose, Alpine clematis, heartleaf oxeye, Alpine enchanter’s nightshade,Austrian leopard’s bane, rare ostrich fern and other species of fernsFauna: dormouse, squirrel, many forest birds, butterfl ies, coleoptera beetles, spidersVegetation: beech forest with fir, fir and spruce forest on calcareous blocks, fragments of vegetation of carbonate forest rocks and vegetation of tall herbsSpecial features: fir - the “Queen of the forest” and several interesting microclimatic, karst and cave features (caves of Golubinja pećina and Ledena pećina, frost areas etc.)

A Landscape of Significance [Vrbovsko]

Kamačnik CanyonThe Kamačnik Canyon, a protected landscape, is a water course of great beauty in the length of 3200 m. A walking trail runs along the crystal clear river through the rich vegetation of protected plant species with various animal life. The bridges within the Kamačnik Canyon are a special attraction and an inexhaustive inspiration to painters, and each meter of this beautiful tributary is different from the other. At the estuary where the the Kamačnik tributary flows into the Dobra River there is a restaurant offering quality homemade dishes. You can reach the entrance to the Kamačnik Canyon along an asphalted road leading from the center of Vrbovsko in direction of the railway station, continuing straight (for approx. one km), then following the road across the railway tracks all the way to the restaurant at the estuary where the Kamačnik tributary flows into the Dobra River.

Strickt Reserve [Mrkopalj]

The Rocks of Bijele&Samarske stijene

The rocks of Bijele & Samarske stijene are the only strict reserve in the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar. It is the area with the strictest protection regime, therefore we kindly ask visitors not to damage or endanger the untouched primordial nature of the reserve.

Flora: edelweiss, dwarf juniper, Alpine sea holly, numerous forest species of plants, ferns, mosses etc.Fauna: bear and many other forest mammals, three-toed woodpecker, black woodpecker, eagle owl, viviparous lizard, Horvath’s rock lizard, Alpine (black) salamander Vegetation: mixed beech-fir forest, fir forest on calcareous blocks, vegetation of rocks and tall herbs („mountain gardens“)Special features: Ratko’s shelter in a halfcave underneath a tall vertical cliff.

The rocks of Bijele & Samarske stijene can be accessed by a gravel forest road leading from Vojni Tuk (3 km from Mrkopalj and 18 km from Delnice) across the field of Matić-poljana and further on to Mlečikov lug, where a hiking trail branches off for Samarske stijene. Two kilometres further on, another path branches off for Bijele stijene. The road leads further towards Jasenak, which means that the area of Bijele stijene and Samarske stijene can also be reached from that side.

Bjelolasica (1534m) is the highest mountain in Gorski Kotar and full of marvellous viewpoints if you visit the top in clear weather. We recommend your walk to the summit should start at Begovo Razdolje.

Risnjak (1528m) is a large mountain range with the bare white cliffs on its peaks guarding the rich forests that lie below. The jewel in its crown is Veliki Risnjak (1528m) – from its peak you can see as far as the bay of Karner, Kamnik and Julian Alps, Snežnik, Klek in Slovenia, Bjelolasica and Velebit.

If you need rest and lodging it can be found in the Dr. Josip Schlosser Klekovski mountain lodge, which can accommodate 55 people.

Below the very peak, there is a vast green plateau called Šloser’s Meadow which you can visit from May to October. The most common approaches to Risnjak are from Crni Lug (the park administration building); the Gornje Jelenje saddle over Vilje; Mrzle Vodice at the Lazac meadow, or from Platak.

Bitoraj (1385m) is a mountain that gets its name from regularly experiencing strong gales. A simple wooden lodge called Bitorajka, sitting beneath the mountain peaks will serve you as welcome shelter.

Kupa, Dobra, ČabrankaThe Risnjak National Park is home not only to the impressive Risnjak range of mountains but also to a water feature of great splendour - the spring of the river Kupa is one of the fastest and deepest water holes in Croatia. The location has been dubbed The Wondrous Valley of the Butterflies because of its rich flora and fauna.

Lakes in Gorski Kotar

The Lokvarsko Lake is an artificial lake covering over 2 square kms and 40 m deep that extends to the foot of Risnjak. The lake is open throughout the year for fishing, relaxing walks along its shores and, in the summer, for swimming. A note to fishermen: some of the largest trout in the world have been caught here! The Fužine region abounds with water and to harness it the local inhabitants built three reservoirs hosting scores of species of fish - making them perfect for fishing.

The Bajer Lake, also in Fužine, is ideal for boat rides, canoeing, kayaking, and surfing – benefitting from helpful breezes. If you wish to get to know the lake better you can walk its shores or take an excursion on a tourist boat.Sveti Anton (St. Anthony) is a tourist boat run by an ecological engine that cruises along the Bajer Lake offering the visitors the pleasure of experiencing an attractive passage into a tributary flowing towards the Lepenica Lake. Summer educational trails3ČABARStopama tršćanskih rudara (Following the Footsteps of the Tršće Miners) there are several mines and surface trenches in the vicinity of Tršće connected by a trail called Stopama tršćanskih rudara. The total length of the trail is 6.5 km.

Staza predatora (The Predators’ Trail) is a tourist/educational trail of 1.7 km displaying predatory animal models – many real-life size. In addition to predators visitors can also learn about other types of animals from this region such as the fox, wild boar, black cock, deer and roebuck. Next to each of the models there is an information table with details about each animal. All along the trail you can also check out tables with environment messages.

NP RISNJAKDuring your visit to the Risnjak National Park the Leska Educational Tour should not be missed - a series of 23 information tables brought together on a footpath of just 4.2 km of footpath and a great chance for experiencing the natural and cultural heritage of this national park.

Summer water sports5Rafting on the river Kupa is best when the water level is high - usually spring and autumn months and after heavy rains. It is also available during the summer months when the water level is low. Descending the river on big rafts holding 10 people is suitable at high water levels while waters at low levels can be traversed by canoe, kayak, or inflatable boats that accommodate 2-3 people and offer an authentic rafting experiences in shallow waters.

“Small rafting”, as we call it, or rafting in shallow waters is comparable with high water rafting. The price includes all necessary rafting equipment (paddle, helmet, life jacket, neoprene suit - long or short depending on the weather, neoprene socks or boots, waterproof jacket, etc.) and experienced rafting guides who provide instruction and answer your questions.

Kayak - Canoe Safari is organized during the summer months on a slower part of the river where the rapids are safe for those with no rowing experience. On this tour you have time to enjoy the natural beauty of Kupa with its rich diversity of flora and fauna and refreshing air to relieve the summer heat.

Trips take 3-4 hours and offer time for paddling, swimming, jumping into the river, and relaxing on the most beautiful stretches of the river Kupa as it meanders through the mountains.

Canyoning in the Devil’s Pass - simply unforgettableSteep cliffs and wild nature surround us and crystal mountain lakes remind us that we are somewhere special. The route takes us through the Jasle mountain stream created over thousands of years and ideal for refreshment and shade.

Upstream we climb carefully and steadily attentive to the cliff rocks that show us our path.

After a short break under the ruins of the old mill we begin our descent through the “water slide”.

Lake kayaking is pure enjoymentFor this kind of trip a “sit on top” kayak, is used, which offers the kayaker access to the remotest and most beautiful bays. Inaccessible by land, or even by boat, a sea kayak can gain entry to endless beautiful lagoons, rocky and sandy beaches, untouched flora and fauna and the endless crystal clear sea.

Lake kayaking programmes include a full day tour of the most beautiful beaches, swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing on the best parts of the coast.

Summer fishing9River and lake fishingWaiting for the fish to bite and the line to pull while you gaze at the green lake or winding mountain stream and all around you peace and serenity….

Gorski Kotar offers a number of possibilities for sporting and recreational fishing: along the river Čabranka, from its spring to its mouth; the river Kupa from its source to Severine and the river Dobra from its spring to Gomirje. The lakes of Lokvarsko, Bajer and Lepenice also invite you. This type of fishing requires a daily permit - more details available through the Gorski Kotar information desks.

Fishing on Kupa within the Risnjak National ParkRecreational “catch and release” fishing is permitted for: brown trout/Salmo trutta (16 May - 30 September) and grayling/Thymallus thymallus (16 May -15 October). The fishing area begins just 1 km downstream from the river’s spring in the area of Srednji Kupari “Malni” and runs to Čabranka’s confluence with the Kupa River. The only type of fishing permitted is with a fishing rod (fly fishing with and artificial fly on a single fish-hook without a counter-hook - or a single fish-hook with a clinched counter-hook). Fishing is not permitted from boats or by night.

A daily fishing ticket costs 250 kn. It can be bought in the Risnjak National Park guest-house, Kupari refuge area as well as in a number of catering facilities along the Kupa River.

The Cycling Trail of Gorski Kotar is a new cycling trail linking up the natural, historic, cultural and culinary

attraction in towns and municipalities of this delightful mountainous region. The trail meanders along the old and little

used forest tracks and paths and will be to the taste of those who seek virgin nature and can tackle rather demanding terrain…

Our trail allows you to experience the entire area of Gorski Kotar in several stages – planning your cycling holiday day by day. There are 7 stages ranging from 28-43 km with a total distance of 260 km. With the addition of 9 branch routes it totals an impressive 400 km of unique enjoyment on two wheels specially designed to feature more than 5000 m in climbs and descents. Enjoy the views, listen to the sounds, smell the freshness, feel the earth below you, and taste the regional cuisine. Gorski Kotar is prepared to delight your senses and challenge your cycling skills.

400 km of unique enjoyment on two wheels!

STAGE 1: Delnice – Skrad (26 km)The stage from Delnice to Skrad will serve as a perfect introduction to the Gorski Kotar experience - combining rises and falls through local forests. The start at Delnice offers the opportunity to view the 90 years old electric Popović mill before passing through the Petehovac hills to the Karolina road - the oldest road in Croatia connecting the interior to the sea. You will pass the region hosting the famous Food Festival Plodovi gorja (Fruit of the Mountains) before travelling through picturesque villages to Skrad and Zeleni Vir (Green Vortex) – a destination that until recently was only open to determined travelers. The 70m waterfall and Devil’s Pass (a canyon 800m long and 100m) is a must for all who enjoy natural scenery.

STAGE 2: Skrad – Severin na Kupi (43 km)This stage is also known as “Cycling from Dobra to Kupa“. Skrad is on the river Dobra and you follow a path on the left shore through several orchards before you reach some of the gems of this region: Čogrljevo lake and the romantic canyon of Kamačnik. From Vrbovsko, you cycle through forests of beech trees separating the Croatia low lands from its mountainous region. Finally, at the end of the stage at Severin, you are greeted by the river Kupa and the magnificent castle of Counts Zrinski and Frankopan.

STAGE 3: Severin na Kupi – Brod na Kupi (37 km)Your adventure between the two towns connecting the river Kupa begins

at the place that inspired the famous writer, Ivan Goran Kovačić. Your cycle trail towards Lukovdol and on to Plemenitaš surrounds you with nature at its

artistic best. The high-point is at Orlova stijena (Eagle Rock) will leave you breathless - not only from the exhilarating climb but also the stunning view facing you as you look down at Kupa. The day ends with a delightful descent to the shore of the river at Brod na Kupi.

STAGE 4: Brod na Kupi – Tršće (40 km)Today you will cycle through the Valley of Butterflies - the valley of the river Kupa which is home to more than 500 species of butterfly. The trail includes a section of road on the Slovenian coast until the “Kupa highway” is completed later next year. Until then the trail leads from the border crossing at Brod na Kupi and along the river at Osilnica to allow visits to the old mill and saw plant in Zamost or Folk Museums in Palčava Šiša, Plešce before reaching Čabar where you should visit the Čabranka spring and the castle of the Zrinski family. This delightful journey ends with a final and satisfying ascent to Tršće.

The Cycling Trail of Gorski Kotar

Way to Croatia47

Page 48: Way 16 Gorski Kotar

STAGE 5: Tršće – Crni Lug (43 km)This is the highest-lying section of the network passing through the most densely forested regions of Gorski Kotar. Apart from the satisfying rhythm of your tyres the only sounds you should hear are the sounds of bird songs and the wind whistling through the trees. There are a few detours to view points available to only those on two wheels. To spice up the experience we recommend you stop at one of the hunting lodges on a route that saves the best for last - in Crni Lug you will be greeted by the Risnjak National Park and a rich abundance of flora and fauna.

STAGE 6: Crni Lug – Fužine (28 km)After experiencing the forests this stage offers the refreshing

mountain lakes. Leaving Crni Lug, in Mrzla Vodica, you are greeted by two lakes: Mrzla Vodica and Lokvarsko.

The Cycling Trail of Gorski Kotar

After the ascent towards Risnjak at Ravno Podolje you descend toward Lepenica and its spring and where another two lakes spread before you: Lepenice and Bajer in Fužine. This experience would not be complete without the cave called Vrelo, which, as it happens, also hides a small lake.

STAGE 7: Fužine – Delnice (41 km)A cycle ride through Gorski Kotar is a pleasure for all the senses - views for the eyes, forest fauna for the nose, birdsong for the ears and the mouthwatering delicacies of local restaurants. All this comes together perfectly in the Fužine-Delnice section. Journeying through the fields of Lič and mountain garden in Belo Selo you pass Lokve, with its special liqueurs, jams and teas, and Mrkopalj, with its special skripavac (‘creaky’) cheese before reaching your destination in Delnice and a final reward of delicious blueberry strudel.
