Conventions and Train Shows

The MidwestRegion has anevent coming up,hmmm whatcould that be?Yes! It’s a con-vention. ‘RailFun’ to be exact! The Fox ValleyDivision withassistance fromthe DuPage divi-sion is presentingwhat I feel isgoing to be awonderful week-

end in the Chicago area May 15, 16, 17 & 18, 2014. Earlysign up for the convention is only $45.00 for members. Youread this correctly, 45 smackers, 45 bucks or green backsfor this long weekend of Rail Fun. There are lots of layoutsto see, clinics and op sessions. There are two prototypetours and regional contests as well. The convention hotel isthe Best Western Plus in Schaumburg. There is a discount-ed rate so sign up before it gets sold out. This is a greatprice no matter how you slice it so download your signupsheet and register today. The registration forms are on theMidwest Region web site by clicking on the convention tab, going to the Fox Valley Division home page or on pages 7and 8 of this Waybill.

Just thinking about conventions makes me feelwarm. I don’t care what Jimmy the ground hog orPunxsutawney Phil have to say, either way it is six weeksto spring. It’s a great time to sit inside and watch the CatMountain RR reappear each year. Now I just need toremember where I put all the buildings and other stuff thatbrings the railroad to life. Oh the fun of outdoor railroading.

The train show season is well under way. I knowthere are a lot of members who not only love to attend trainshows but if you are in a division that sponsors a show youhave a double treat. You not only go to a show that helps

your division but you also get to promote our hobby. Trainshows are a great place to meet people and work onrecruiting new members. The hard part is trying to figureout who the people are that we should concentrate ourefforts on. Most of the time they are not going to jump upand down and then say “now that I’m here where can Isign up?” It just doesn’t work out that way. Nor can you fol-low someone around a train show to see what kind of rail-road models they are looking at. You could be arrested forstalking these days.

So what can you do? Most divisions have a mem-bership booth or table that they set up at shows. These donot have to be the crown jewel of display booths, just veryvisible and attractive so that people will come by and chatfor a while. Once you get the conversation started and youelaborate about membership in the NMRA you have justincreased your chances of success. You can start by dis-cussing the opportunities that are available to them as amember, and when you engage in discussion you just maystrike that one note that brings them on board.

A well-organized display involves making sure youare fully stocked with fliers, pictures from some layouts inyour area and schedules of what your division does forexample, meeting schedule, contests, layout tours, clinicsand of course train shows. As far as leaflets and brochuresare concerned, if you need some just call or email head-quarters and let them know that you need them. I foundthis works very well. In June 2013, Gary Children and I setup a table at the National N’ scale convention inMilwaukee. We were also joined by Reid Kahrs and JoeRuss. We needed some brochures so I got in touch withthe NMRA and they in turn put me in touch with PageMartin, NMRA director in charge of Marketing. Page sentus a lot of stuff to pass out. Our theme that we used whilechatting with the N’ scalers had been that the NMRA is NotScale Specific.

At the SCWD (my home division) I am the volun-teer coordinator for the Mad City Model Railroad Show andSale. I always manage to take a couple of hours each dayof the show to sit in the membership booth and meet peo-ple who speak train talk. This is a language that the model-

Editor’s ColumnI got a call from Richard in early

December. He had read about me in theWaybill and asked if I wanted to see hislayout. As he lived nearby, I agreed anddrove over to his house.

I was met at the door by his caregiv-er. You see, Richard was in a very badautomobile accident as a teenager. Infact he was not expected to live.Nevertheless he perservered, andalthough confined to a wheelchair, heled an active life championing the handi-capped.

As I entered his house, I could seehe was an avid railfan as well as model-er, with maps, photos and other memo-rabilia throughout his living room.Richard wheeled up in his motorizedscooter and we sat and talked for awhile before he asked if I wanted to seehis pride and joy in the basement.

Holding on to strategically placedhand holds, he was able to walk himselfdownstairs. The layout was at wheel-chair hight and showed his determina-tion and skill as a modeler. We ransome trains and talked awhile longer.Richard exclaimed that he would haveto give it up as he was too weak to con-tinue to live in his own house. I hadnever spoken to anyone who loved thehobby as much as him and I could seethe sadness in his heart that he wouldhave to leave it all behind.

After I left I reflected on what a greathobby this is. You meet so many greatpeople and form lasting freindships.

Richard’s sister called me a fewweeks later. Richard had suffered astroke and was living in an assistedcare home, his layout left behind.

Congratulations to David Johnsonand Jim Landwehr of the Fox ValleyDivision, Fred Robinson of the SouthCentral Wisconsin Division and PaulWussow of the DuPage Division forbeing elected to Directors-at-Large forthe Midwest Region.

Their term is for two years, 2014-2016 but there will be several vacanciesopening up for 2015-2017. If you areinterested and would like to serve theregion, details will be forthcoming.

Region NewsMidwest Region Achievement Program Reportby Marvin Preussler MMR- MWR AP Manager

I am happy to report that there has been someactivity from our members. Members continue to take partin the Achievement Program all over the Midwest Region.Take a look at the following:

The following member received a Golen SpikeCertificate:

Richard Hendrickson Des Plaines, IL

The following members received an AP Certificate:

Gregg Condon Greenville, WI StructuresGregg Condon Greenville, WI CarsGregg Condon Greenville, WI SceneryGregg Condon Greenville, WI Prototype ModelsSteve Studley Bloomington, IN Official

Hopefully there will be more activity in the AP inthe next few months as the winter turns to spring, and a lotof modeling, shows, and activities continue! There areplenty of train shows and meets coming up to get onemotivated. As I write this, it is only a few days away fromthe Mad City Model Railroad Show in Madison, Wisconsin. It is put on by the South Central Wisconsin Division and itis always a fun show to attend. I look forward to traveling

there and enjoying a great all-around train show. This is agood time to get those models done for the MidwestRegion Convention coming up this spring. If you need toget a model judged, consider attending the MidwestRegion Convention this year. So get going on those model-ing projects and take a look at the NMRA website, to seewhat you may qualify for and set a goal. Hopefully you willbe able to use this past MWR meet to motivate you to getthat model finished up and to get going in the AchievementProgram.

Currently there are six more certificate applicationsthat I have sent to National for processing by members inour Midwest Region. Hopefully these AP certificates will beshowing up in my mailbox shortly. Like I said in my last col-umn, it seems the folks at National are running about threemonths behind. All I can tell you is to be patient. One thingI can tell you is that I process MWR AP paperwork on amonthly basis. I do not sit on paperwork for our membersunless there is a question about some of the qualificationsor documentation involved. As always, work with your divi-sion Achievement Program Manager first, and if there is aproblem, feel free to contact me. Thanks! Marvin Preussler, MMR

Frugal Modelerby Dave Nelson

The Union Pacific and Rochelle IL celebrated thegrand opening of the UP's massive Global III intermodalyard in August of 2003 with a demonstration of containerunloading equipment, bus tours of Global III, and a roundtrip from Rochelle to Sterling on the former C&NW mainline using Chicago Metra equipment. Of course I just hadto ride in 7704, a former C&NW Pullman-Standard bi-level,which was a big mistake as it had the most scratched anddarkly tinted windows. It was also dark and rainy, and ingeneral a bad day to be shooting ASA 64 slide film. As wecame through Sterling I caught the briefest glimpse of anold industrial building with a chute from one windowextending to a mill gondola with ALTX (Southern IllinoisRailcar Company) reporting marks. That gon had a uniquebaffle attached to contain and control the materials andwastes being tossed down the chute. I managed tosqueeze off two grab shots, both dark and grainy, but withenough detail to suggest how to model this distinctive feature.

With no chance to measure the baffle I "guessti-mated" the dimensions. ALTX 637001 is a 65' formerSeaboard car which does not resemble the high-sidedWalthers Thrall 65' mill gon on my HO roster, but a Proto2000 56' mill gon approximates the height and mass of theALTX car end, so I used it to arrive at plausible measure-ments for my models and the accompanying very crudequarter-inch scale drawing. I think the baffle is 12 to 14feet long, with the outer framing about 6 feet high overall, and the actual sheet metal portion being about 2 feet high.Again these are strictly estimates, and you are free toarrive at your own conclusions.

I initially followed the prototype by constructing fourseparate "frames" 3 feet wide by 6 feet high using .030" x

.030" styrene, then cementingthem together. It proved diffi-cult to get the four separatesegments of the bottom beam even and straight, so theywere cut off and replaced with a single piece of .030" x.030" about 13.75 scale feet long. When I compared theresult with the photo, it looked bulky, so I constructedanother one using .020" x .020" styrene, but then finishedoff both of them. The .020" material was too spindly toattempt four separate frames, so I constructed an outer

box shape 14 feet long by six feet high, and then createdthe three interior vertical beams by cementing two lengthsof .020" x .020" side by side (if I'd had any .020" x .040"stock on hand I would have used it). I did not attempt tomodel the angled braces at every corner that can be seenin the slides.

As it was, I found both the .020" x .020" as well asthe .030" x .030" styrene a challenge to work with - like try-ing to set a broken leg on a spider.

It seems probable that the side of the sheet metalbaffle that faces the inside of the car, which takes the bruntof being hit by the load, also has a framing support ofsome kind, so Iconstructed twobasic outer framesusing .020" x .020"styrene.

There arevague indicationsin the photos thattriangular shapedgusset/supports,perhaps 6 inches

or so high, hold astrip of metal thatrests on the topedge of the gon-dola side. Afterfrustratingattempts to makeuniform small tri-angular piecesout of .020" and.030" sheet styrene, I cried uncle and instead cementedtiny lengths of 1/16" styrene "L" angle to do the job I rea-soned that the strip on top of the gondola side probablythen extends down the inner side of the car to give it stabil-ity, presumably itself an "L" shape. To make the modelpractical and usable it seemed this L angle should bedeeper than it is wide; I am aware of no such availablecommercial shape but got there by taking Plastruct's 3/16""T" shape and shaving off one wing of the T.

Other thanthe fact thatI try to saveeven smallscraps ofstyrene fromprior proj-ects, sosome of thestyreneused didn't

"cost" me anything, the only really frugal part of this projectis that for the actual baffle itself I used the thin aluminumfrom a can of Diet Coke. Unlike styrene, aluminum showsslight dents just like the prototype. I figured the brushedaluminum color of Diet Coke cans would be perfect butwas surprised to learn it is painted on just like the rest ofthe lettering on the can. All the paint, and the interior lin-

ing, were removedwith a wire brushin a Dremel tool. Thus, any alu-minum soda canwould do. Everything except

for the aluminumitself was painted
