Place HierarchyNeighbourhoods, precincts, and destinations

Naming area levelsA critical element of this wayfinding system is naming places, landmarks and areas in a way that users can relate to. A hierarchy of place names identifies where a place is in relation to a wider area, so we divide the city into neighbourhoods, precincts and destinations:

Neighbourhoods: Victoria is divided into a number of distinct areas or neighbourhoods. They are often easily recognizable regions often dictated by geography or character.

Precincts: Neighbourhoods are made up of several precincts, such as Inner Harbour or Jubilee Village. Precincts can be divided into three basic categories: 1) open space nodes based around a

square, park or other public space. eg. Bastion Square or Beacon Hill Park;

2) linear nodes based around a main road, eg. Douglas Street or,

3) transport nodes, eg. Wharf Street floats.

Destinations: These describe specific locations such a building, amenity or station. There are numerous graphic means for identifying different types of destinations but these are the most fine-grained graphic elements on a map, such as “BC Legislature” or ferries to Washington on the sample below.

Unique, complete, accessibleThe pylon is a consistent approach to mapping and directional information. It’s two sided and includes heads up mapping and directions facing each way the viewer is standing.

This version of the mini-pylon can be adapted for marking key non-motorized routes such as the David Foster Harbour Pathway.

In consultation with local First Nations,

there is an opportunity to incorporate

traditional place naming into signs

and maps.
