HEALTH CORNERBACK TO SCHOOL…STEP ONE - VACCINATIONS

From my childhood years, I remember radio personality, Rev. Ike, who preached prosperity gospel before many of us knew of that brand of theology. As he used to say, “The best thing you can do for the poor is not to be one of them.” To this day, you might be able to find a Rev. Ike supporter who faithfully purchased his prayer cloth, however, most people have come to recognize his hucksterism and we tend to question how anyone could have fallen under his spell.Fast forward to present time and we have the anti vaxxer movement. The World Health Organization has ranked vaccine hesitancy — the growing resistance to widely available lifesaving vaccines — as one of the top 10 health threats in the world for 2019. Reliance on the internet for medical information can have disastrous and/or deadly results. On the internet, anti-vaccine propaganda has outpaced pro-vaccine public health information. The anti-vaxxers, as they are colloquially known, have hundreds of websites promoting their message, a roster of tech- and media-savvy influencers, and an aggressive political arm that includes at least a dozen political action committees. (NY Times 1/19/2019)Vaccines prevent two million to three million deaths globally each year. Vaccines are not toxic, and they do not cause autism. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of children who are unvaccinated has quadrupled since 2001, even though the overall utilization of most vaccines remains high. More than 100,000 American infants and toddlers have received no vaccines whatsoever, and millions more have received only some crucial shots. As the schoolhouse doors prepare to open, it’s time for parents, relatives, and those of us concerned about the health of our community to be aware of this public health crisis and make sure every child has up to date vaccinations.
