The purpose of the study is to develop a conceptual space plan with regards to the renovation and expansion of this existing science education facility. The conceptual space plan organizes the building to have each department located on one floor keeping their 

facilities in close proximity to one another. .

Student lounges and informal gathering spaces are located on each floor to facilitate un structured leaning opportunities. Included in the renovation are new HVAC, electrical, plumbing, automatic sprinkler and elevator systems. Also the entire exterior skin has been 

replaced with a new brick and limestone façade.

The area between the Stewart Science Center and the buildings to the north form a courtyard with a paved Lower Courtyard at the first floor level and a landscaped Upper Courtyard at the second floor level of the Stewart Science Center. The north, west and south perimeter of the 

site will be landscaped with street trees and a narrow planting bed.

The First Floor contains Mechanical spaces, Lecture Hall basement and I.T. Department Storage as well as the Marine Biology Lab and Classrooms in the Renovated Existing Building. The IT Department including Server occupies a Partial First Floor in the Addition along with 

the new Entrance Lobby and Loading Dock.

The Second Floor accommodates the Nursing Department and Lecture Hall. Nursing Department  Offices and Classrooms as well as the renovated Lecture Hall and new Student Lounge are located in the Renovated Existing Building. An enlarged Nursing Simulation Lab, 

Debriefing Rooms and Classrooms occupy the Second Floor in the Addition.

The Third Floor accommodates the Computer Science/Math/Physics Department and new North Entrance. Computer Science/Math/Physics Department Offices, Labs and Classrooms as well as new Student Lounge are located in the Renovated Existing

Building. Computer Science and Computer Forensics Labs occupy the Addition along with a Research Lab and Machine Shop.

along with Biological Research Labs and Greenhouse.

Phase Ia consists of the construction of a large addition to the existing Stewart Science Center to house those labs  and classrooms that presently occupy the space in the existing Stewart Science Center to be renovated. Phase Ib involves the renovation of the southeast 

corner of the existing Stewart Science Center.

Phase IIa consists of the demolition of existing façade and installation of a new brick veneer and stone trim with insulated multipaned metal windows on the north, south and east facades of the existing building. Phase IIb is the renovation of the eastern half of the existing Stewart Science Center. Included is a new north stair and corridor for life safety code purposes in the existing building during later phases.

Phase IIIa consists of the demolition of existing façade and installation of new brick and stone trim veneer with insulated multipanedmetal windows on the west facade of the existing building. Phase IIIb is the renovation of the western half of the existing building.

Included is new enlarged labs and classrooms as well as accessible toilet rooms and elevator.

The conceptual design and its construction were planned to be implemented in three phases. The phasing of this construction will enable:The phasing of construction is planned such that the use of the same quantity and type of laboratories and classrooms is maintained throughout the renovation and expansion.The new addition was designed to accommodate those laboratories and classrooms that would be displaced during the latter phases.As well as to be able to operate as a separate building if required.The I.T. department is located in the new addition as part of Phase I to aid the relocation of the server and ensure its continuous operation.Construction is phased to comply with current code requirements. Also during Phase I all classrooms and laboratories in the existing building will remain in use and during Phase II all classrooms and laboratories on the west side of the building will remain in use. Also areas of construction will be separated from areas in use by an appropriately fire rated barrier.The phasing of construction is timed to make best use of seasonal weather and corresponds to the academic year.
