The Oregon women’s basketball program has some of the most passionate fans in the Pac-10. Over
the last 11 seasons, the Ducks have fi nished in the top half of the conference in attendance, aver-
aging more than 5,000 fans three diff erent years. Last season, the Ducks averaged 2,219 fans per
game. On Jan. 31, 2009, a season-best 3,107 fans came to watch Oregon take on Oregon State as
part of the Civil War series.

2-for-1 The Oregon women’s basketball
program strives to maintain a family experience at games.
Local corporations such as Carl’s Jr., BI-MART, Oregon Com-
munity Credit Union and Jerry’s Home Improvement Center
sponsor promotional ticket giveaways and discounts to
ensure families can make it to the game.
16 Over the last two seasons, the Oregon women’s
basketball team has had 16 games televised regionally or
nationally. This year, the Civil War will be telecast in Corval-
lis on Jan. 9, and Oregon will host Stanford on Jan. 23, with
both games being aired on Fox Sports Net. More televised
games are still to be announced.
6 The Oregon women’s basketball family also looks to
make a diff erence in the community. The Ducks have partic-
ipated in raising money at its annual WBCA Pink Zone event,
while also collecting donations for Toys for Tots. In addition,
the Ducks have sponsored Dads and Daughters games as
well as National Girls and Women in Sports Day. This year,
the Ducks will play a role with the World Vision Invitational
- raising money for providing mosquito nets which protect
children, moms and dads from being bitten by mosquitoes
that transmit the parasite that contains malaria. One net
costs $6 and can save a life.

Mac Court to Matthew Knight ArenaHome to 9,000 boisterous fans, McArthur
Court, also known as “The Pit,” will be in
its fi nal full season of duty while Matthew
Knight Arena is under construction just
blocks away.
Mac Court was built in 1926, with the fi rst
game on Jan. 14, 1927, when the Oregon
men’s basketball team beat Willamette,
38-10. It has since undergone many modi-
fi cations and upgrades.
In 2001, The Sporting News called
McArthur Court the best college basketball
gym in the nation, and in 1995 Sports Il-
lustrated listed it as one of the 12 toughest
places in the country to play at the colle-
giate level.
Mac Court has been good to the women’s
basketball program over the years, with
the Ducks being successful in nearly 75
percent of their games at home since the
1976-77 season.
The Oregon women were almost unbeat-
able at home during the 1980s, accumu-
lating a 98-19 ledger during that span,
including a 28-game home-court winning
streak from Jan. 21, 1980, through March
6, 1982.
With its deep history, ever-lasting charm
and ardent supporters, McArthur Court
has solidifi ed itself as a college basketball
mecca.

The University of Oregon plans to christen Matthew Knight Arena with the start of the
2010-11 Pacifi c-10 Conference season. Currently under construction, the 12,500-seat
arena is named in honor of the of the eldest son of Nike Founder Phil Knight and his
wife, Penny.
Phil and Penny Knight have been longtime, generous supporters of the University of
Oregon, including their most recent cornerstone gift of $100 million to the Oregon
Athletics Legacy Fund.
The University of Oregon began exploring options for a new arena in 2002. This project
is the result of the eff orts of many people over the course of many years — architects
and athletes; faculty, staff and students; legislators; city leaders and neighbors.
The Matthew Knight Arena, together with Oregon’s fi rst-rate football stadium, new
baseball park and world-class track and fi eld facility, provides a solid foundation
to position Oregon Athletics for the future. The new arena will feature several ele-
ments of Mac Court that made the venerable building appealing to fans and student-
athletes, and intimidating to opponents. One of the most important criteria for the
design of the new arena was to replicate the intensity and intimacy of Mac Court.
Almost 2,000 seats, including nearly 1,000 in the lower level of the arena, will be al-
located to students. This total is more than the approximately 1,600 seats currently re-
served for students in Mac Court. In addition, the pitch of the seating, while not quite
as vertical as Mac Court is, it is signifi cantly steeper than virtually any other arena in
the country. Students and fans will still be right on top of the action on the court.

A strength and con di tion ing pro gram is es sen tial
to any successful athletics department. In order to
perform at an optimal level for sustained pe ri ods, the
athlete must maintain proper nu tri tion al habits and
rest patterns and develop eff ective train ing rou tines.
“The strength program at the University of Oregon is
based on the phi los o phy of im prov ing the de mands
need ed for op ti mal ath let ic abil i ty, that being the
de vel op ment of ex plo sive power,” said Jim Radcliff e,
strength and con di tion ing coach.
“Our program is set up for year-round training, di vid ed
into four periods: in season, postseason, off season and
pre season,” Radcliff e said. “Each period has diff er ent
phas es and the ultimate goal is to develop all as pects
of strength, speed, fl ex i bil i ty, agility, jump ing ability,
ac cel er a tion and foot quick ness.”
OFFSEASON TRAINING
Weight training is three times per week. Workouts
are designed to im prove areas that were particularly
weak the prior year. Main emphasis is on improving
overall basic strength us ing general exercises with
free weights. Con di tion ing oc curs three times a week
and is di rect ed to ward im prov ing run ning tech nique,
to de vel op speed and accelerations, and to in crease
vertical jump ing.
PRESEASON TRAINING
In preseason training, a greater emphasis is placed on
power. Training includes ex plo sive lifts and exercises
performed at higher ve loc i ties. Con di tion ing oc curs
three times per week and is di rect ed toward im prov ing
specifi c basketball moves. Work outs in clude plyometric
exercises to im prove jumping ability and change of
direction drills to im prove agil i ty.
IN-SEASON TRAINING
Weight training once or twice per week depending
on trav el sched ule. Conditioning two or three times

On September 28, 2008 the University of Oregon Athletic Department launched a non-profi t community organization program called O Heroes. The goal of O Heroes is to
create a single identity for all community service initiatives and to seek involvement from all student-athletes, staff , faculty, and campus community. Service will be focused
in three areas which student-athletes feel they are able to excel in: health, education and service.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee decided to launch O Heroes as a department recognized non-profi t organization. This allows O Heroes to collect donations on
campus grounds including athletic facilities. O Heroes is also able to donate money raised to service projects such as the Duckling, which provides fi nancial support to a local
child battling an illness. SAAC executive members will serve as the Board of Directors of the non-profi t.
Other components of O Heroes include partnering with the local organizations including the United Way of Lane County, the Boys and Girls Club of Emerald Valley, Kidssports,
local school districts, the Competition not Confl ict program, and the National Childhood Obesity Foundation. O Heroes also will dedicate three days of the academic year
when each team and department staff will be encouraged to do a project. Community agencies may have their requests fulfi lled on these days. Teams are also encouraged to
complete additional team projects throughout the year.
