Student life

Over the past two meetings, it has been great to catch up with somany members and see how the club has continued to grow overthe past season. Although I am unable to attend most clubmeetings, I do my best to keep up to date on all the activity in thePhotonews. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulatethe many members on their numerous successes and rememberthose we have sadly lost over the summer.

This week, I am due to start my third and final year studyingBA(Hons) Press & Editorial Photography at Falmouth Universityin Cornwall. Over the past year, I have been busy working on arange of projects including photographing the Bloodhoundsupersonic car trials in Newquay, the International Mining Gamesnear Camborne, the Falmouth Classics boat festival and many

other client commissions.

I have recently completed a project which involved creating avideo advert for the Seahawk Gliding Club based at RNASCuldrose in Cornwall. In addition to filming and editing, I havebeen fortunate to have been able to learn to glide and try aerialphotography in powered aircraft over the Lizard peninsula. I reallyenjoyed learning about multimedia and it is an area of visualcommunication I wish to explore further in the future.

In January, I became a Student Ambassador for the university whichhas involved a range of paid duties including helping to run opendays and campus tours, making sales calls, attending educationfairs in Birmingham and Bangor and photographic commissions forthe sales team. I have recently been promoted to a Senior StudentAmbassador and will be responsible for the Institute ofPhotography’s Ambassadors and events.

In June, I finished a six-month part-time work placement withSouth West News Service, the largest independent news agencyin the country that supplies editorial copy, photographs and videoto a range of clients. The aim was to investigate and reflect on thestrategies used by SWNS in connecting with audiences andcritically evaluate the professional practices of one of theorganisation’s staff photographers based in Plymouth.

As many of you have noticed, I no longer require a crutch whenwalking. Although I recovered from my hip replacement after afew months, the foot drop condition caused by some nervedamage during the surgery has taken longer. In fifteen months, Ihave gained two thirds of the range of movement in my footwhich is enough for steady walking and most activities. The nerveis expected to fully recover with time and exercise.

I am very much looking forward to starting my final year andcontinuing to develop my practical, research, and professionalskills in photography. My time at university has taught me how tocapture a range of press and editorial subjects for all the publishedmediums including newspapers, magazines and the web. Once Igraduate from Falmouth in July, I am hoping to pursue a career inphotojournalism after reflecting on my photographic practices andstudying the practices of others in the press industry. Despite thedecline of daily newspapers, I believe the need for the news, current affairs and stories of interest is stronger than ever as thepublic’s needs evolve, in addition to online access becomingeasier and more popular.

I hope everyone enjoys the new season ahead and look forward toreturning to the club at Christmas.
