PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE From Jim Walker, D.D.S.

The  American  Dental  Association  was  created  one  hundred  and  fifty-‐six  years  ago  by  a  group  of  dentists  at  a  meeting  in  Niagara  Falls,  New  York.  From  the  beginning,  the  goal  of  the  organization  was  to  be  the  national  representative  association  that  was  dedicated  to  promoting  high  professional  standards  and  scientific  research.

Due  to  the  efforts  of  those  that  have  practiced  before  us,  you,  and  approximately  158,000  other  doctors,  today  the  American  Dental  Association  is  the  most  widely  recognized  dental  organization  in  the  world.  Collectively  we  are  able  to  represent,  demonstrate  and  promote  the  highest  standards  of  oral  health  education,  prevention  and  treatment.  It  is  an  impressive  achievement.

The  American  Dental  Association  can  appear  at  times  to  be  so  strong  that  it  can  seem  that  individual  participation  is  not  necessary  or  relevant.  However  this  organization  has  been,  and  remains  today,  a  bottom  to  top  organization.  Your  participation  still  matters  today  as  it  did  those  156  years  ago  when  26  dentists  formed  the  American  Dental  Association.    This  organization  is  the  one  that  is  weaved  into  the  entire  fabric  of  dentistry.  It  is  a  part  of  all  of  our  lives,  and  we  are  part  of  it.  While,  like  any  fabric,  the  ultimate  strength  of  the  organization  is  dependent  upon  the  strength  and  integrity  of  each  individual  fiber,  this  is  a  dynamic  association  that  is  capable  of  developing,  strengthening,  and  mending.

As  I  assume  leadership  for  a  brief  moment  in  time,  I  am  in  awe  of  the  history  and  responsibility  this  office  represents,  and  of  the  potential  that  26  members  can  have.    You  matter.  You  matter  to  the  ADA,  the  ODA  and  to  the  Washington  County  Dental  Society.  You  matter  to  me  and  if  I  can  help  you  in  any  way,  if  you  have  any  questions,  concerns,  or  suggestions  of  any  kind,  please  contact  me  at:  [email protected]

This  is  your  society,  be  the  power  of  26.

Save  the  Date  for  our  Annual  Give  Kids  A  Smile  Event    Saturday,  February  6,  2016

Each  year  WCDS  members  and  their  staff  partner  with  Pacific  University’s  School  of  Dental  Hygiene  in  Hillsboro  to  provide  needed  dental  care  to  children.  Last  year,  over  100  local  children  received  a  variety  of  free  dental  services  at  GKAS!  In  addition,  several  WCDS  members  were  part  of  our  “Smile  Factory  Team”;  treating  children  in  their  own  practices  after  the  GKAS  day  to  address  additional  dental  needs  that  could  not  be  completed  at  the  one-‐day  event.                Volunteers  can  sign  up  for  either  the  morning  clinic,  the  afternoon  clinic,  or  all  day.  It  is  extremely  helpful  if  Dentists  can  volunteer  as  a  team  with  their  own  Dental  Assistant.  Other  staff  members  are  also  wecome  to  volunteer.  If  you  cannot  volunteer  on  that  date,  February  6th,  please  consider  joining  our  “Smile  Factory  Team”  .  To  volunteer,  or  if  you  have  questions,  please  contact  the  WCDS  Office:
