WOKING CANAL QUARTER – APP

We were given a task to design an App that promoted the Woking Canal Quarter and its surrounding areas , including the Lightbox Gallery and the Living Planet Centre.

SITE VISITWhilst at the site I did some sketches of the two buildings which I later coloured with water colour paints to create a translucent quality .The thing that most struck me about both the buildings and the canal was the way that light filtered through windows and trees and this is what I wanted to create with the water colour wash.

The reflection of light was my main inspiration.....

RESEARCH FOR APPSMovie information app - easy to read and see, text, which is very strong and bold. Contrasting background colours are not overwhelming, so it is clear to notice. Easy for someone to remember. The page structure for IMDb may appear complex, but is easy to get to grips with. Visual and informative page layout/design, with quick navigation.

General knowledge quiz app - bold text, in title block which stands out well on its contrasting colour background. Memorable and effective to viewers. Easy navigational structure to the app’s design. Simple but striking and fun. So it keeps you interested and can be shared with friends

The British film institute logo gave me inspiration for my own app logo, which will appear in the app “button” on the home screen of the mobile device. It is simple and effective!

SKETCHES AND IDEASSketch experiments of the areas from the site visit. My experiments consisted of realistic and abstract sketches in black and white and some with colour.

I also created sketches & paintings for possible app page ideas.

Also experimented with light quality by taking photos and cutting out where the light would be and then replacing it with coloured cellophane to represent the light reflecting through

TYPOGRAPHY

The Font/title for my app needed the following attributes:• stand out • work well with other colours and backgrounds• fit with the theme of the brief/app • be an easy on the eyes colour • be easy for audiences to read • title needs to stand out and have strong colour• be big enough to see at the top of the page• not be too fancy or decorative to compliment the buildings

I looked at many type faces that seemed appropriate for my App. I settled on a very simple typeface because I did not want it too clash with the bright colours and images that were behind it. The name of the typeface was Blissful Thinking and it seemed to sum up the design process and the feeling of the Canal Quarter itself.

STORYBOARD

Development of App PagesI wanted to use a unique feature of each area which I would draw then add a natural finish such as wood or trees, and then add the translucent colour with coloured cellophane as shown below. Then I could add the written word which could be changed according to what events were taking place etc.For the Living Planet Centre I chose the unique ceiling design. For the Lightbox Gallery I chose the scaled tiles on the outside of the building and for the Canal I chose the trees.

EVALUATIONThe original brief of the project asked for an App design that would promote the Woking Canal Quarter and

surrounding areas.

I enjoyed the trip to Woking and the two buildings. Although It didn't seem like it at the time it was a great inspiration for my final App page designs.

My favourite part of the project were the experimental drawings and the experiments using cellophane to mimic the reflections of light.

What I didn’t want from my app was something or images that only concentrated on one building rather than the whole Canal Quarter. With that in mind I am happy that I have achieved what I set out to do.

Once I had established my design direction, the hardest part of the App process was putting what was in my mind onto the actual app programme.
