FROM A PASTOR’S HEART Dear Covenant

Church Family,

I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of my thoughts on our “Vision” as a Church. One of the key initial points that I hoped to make throughout this vision casting process was to identify our “Mission” as part of Christ’s Church. To do this I wanted us to see that our mission statement is

simply an announcement claiming our shared faith and call-ing with the Biblical Church that we find throughout the pages of the Bible. These particular ideas are clearly found in the Scripture passages of Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8, 2 Timothy 2:2, and Psalm 96:1-4. As we put these biblical ideas and statements together it helps us see that we at Covenant, along with every other true Church past, present, and future, should join in the mission of “Being Christ’s witnesses through discipleship and worship.” This is our Mission State-ment, but we need a “Vision” for Covenant that will put us on a path toward fulfilling that statement. In fact every church needs their own “Vision” that will facilitate this pur-suit.

At Covenant, our new Vision Statement is: “To be widely known for extending the knowledge and benefits of Christ to the people and the places that God has given us.” Before I even say anything else about this, I hope that you can see the compelling nature of that statement and I hope that you can picture yourself as being a part of how this will come to be. With that said, it’s very important to have a pathway that leads us to becoming what our Vision states. So how do we become widely known for extending the knowledge and

benefits of Christ to the people and the places that God has given us? That’s a good question and I’m glad you asked. I believe that there are three primary avenues that will lead us to becoming what our Vision states. First, we must pursue Christ-Exalting Worship and this is where we focus on our Sunday Worship Service. Second, we must pursue Intentional Community and this is where we focus on our small group ministries, service ministries, and our Foundation Hour stud-ies. Third, we must pursue Outward Motion and this is where we focus on being equipped for ministry “off-campus.” Of course, there are some very specific ways and other unspe-cific ways that these things get carried out and I have out-lined some of these in other settings and these will be avail-able on our website soon.

The goal of our leadership here at Covenant will be to keep this new Vision Statement in front of all of us and to take opportunity after opportunity to teach about it, look for ways to apply it, and evaluate how we are progressing toward it. Therefore, questions that get generated from this article will hopefully get answered as these ideas get shaped and elaborated on over the coming months and years. By the way, try and take five minutes or so and really focus on memorizing what’s in the bold print. Then, as you’re inviting people to visit Covenant with you and they want to know a little bit more about the Church, you can, with great energy and emotion, tell them this! After all, that’s one of the main ways we will become widely known.

Grace and Peace,

Your servant pastor,

Jake

Dear Covenant Family,

What an incredible turn out we had for our first Family Fel-lowship and Fundraiser of the school year! So many of our school and church families ate at Ricardo’s Mexican Café on Thursday, September 24, to support our fundraising ef-forts. The food was great, the company was great, and WE DIDN’T HAVE TO COOK! Ricardo’s is always a fan-favorite! Our thanks to Melissa Zielke for making the ar-rangements for this fun evening. Melissa is mom to Brayden in 4th Grade and Kadence in PreK! She is lining up several more Family Fellowship Nights for the school year. The next will be coming up in October at The Pizza Press at the Orange Circle on October 22. Flyers will be available soon.

In Chapel on Fri-day, September 25, we celebrated the students who received our first Cougar Character Awards of the school year. Each month we focus on a character value that is easy to understand, easy to teach, and supported by a corresponding Scripture verse. This month’s Christian Value has been RESPECT. 1 Pe-ter 2:17 tells us to “Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the em-peror.” Throughout the month we stressed the importance of treating others with respect at all times...teachers, staff and classmates; and to be kind and considerate to one an-other. CONGRATULATIONS to Isabel Kieczykowski, Naomi Kiniti, Beija Malek, Juliann Morris and Austin Willingham. We are so proud of you!

CELEBRATE THE SPIRIT These words have been my strength. Even though I was lost and separated from God, He loved me, and because He is love, God sent His Son to die on the Cross and rise from the dead three days later. John 3:16 explains “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever be-lieveth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, He became the payment for our sin. Now, we do not have to pay for our sin our-selves. By His grace, salvation is pro-vided. In Romans 5:8, the Bible says, “But God commended His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” We must place our full trust in Jesus Christ alone for for-giveness and eternal life.

I grew up in a Catholic family with 12 years of Catholic school, so I was sur-rounded by God and the Church from the very beginning. However, I felt like I was just going through the motions of doing “Catholic things” that I thought you were supposed to do. I didn’t know Him, I just knew about Him. In 1994, my aunt who was very reli-gious and went to Church every single day, went home to be with the Lord at the age of 58. I took that hard for I felt that the Lord didn’t answer our prayers. Six months later, at the age of 54, my mother went home to be with the Lord, for she had contracted Hepa-titis C from a blood transfusion. The two most important women in my life were no longer with us and I walked away from the church and the Lord. I believed in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but they weren’t an important part of my life. I just lived my life and rarely did I pray, open the Bible or seek the Lord.

Fifteen years later in 2010, I was help-ing my sister find a new school for her girls and I found Covenant Christian School. She loved the school. I was liv-ing in Palm Springs and would visit from time to time, but I was living with my dad and enjoying my life. Six months later, my dad died and I found myself walking away from the Lord again. It seemed whenever I was at my

darkest times I walked away and gave Him the blame.

In 2012, I moved out to the OC to help my sister who had an incurable disease. I was so thankful for the help CCS gave her on the tuition, because her medi-cine was very expensive. I started going to Church here for it was my way of saying thanks. I loved the Sermons and they touched me deeply, I would find myself in tears, I would sit up front at church even though when I went to the Catholic Church I would sit in the back and exit quickly.

In January 2014, I became a member of the church, not even imagining the worse day of my life was only two months away. On March 8, 2014, my best friend and sister went home to be with the Lord. We were close as kids and grew even closer as we grew up. Her passing took a piece of my heart away.

You would have thought from my past that I would have quickly turned away from the Lord and the church and not look back. I don’t know how I found the courage to walk into church Sunday morning after just losing my sister the day before. I know that the Lord was with me, has been with me and has never left me, even when I left Him. It’s funny how when my Mom, Dad and Aunt died I ran away, but my sister’s passing brought me back to the Lord. I will be the first to admit that if it wasn’t for my nieces, friends, four legged friends and this church, I can honestly say that I would not be here today. I know I am taking this important spiri-tual step not only for myself and the Lord but for my nieces so they can feel the Love of Jesus even while they miss their mom. I don’t want them to ever turn away from Him as I once did.

Not only do I want to thank the Lord but I would also like to thank Sally Har-rington and Julie McCully who have seen me through precepts this past year and have been my rock. If you would have told me a few years ago I would be in a Bible study class, I would have laughed. Actually, because of these classes, I have finally thanked

Jesus for all that He has done for me and for taking my family home. I would like to thank Elaine Fitzwater for show-ing me how much the Lord does love me. She has touched my heart more than she knows. To this Church and congregation, I say thank you, for you have all touched my heart in one way or another. And to my best friend Stephen for keeping me in his prayers. He has been there for me and I feel blessed.

Sometimes, when I look back at those dark days, I realize that God allowed me to fall into a pit filled with depres-sion, despair and gloom only to pull me out so He could rebuild me and make me the spiritual woman that He re-quires. He knows the final outcome of any difficult circumstance. There are times we Christians forget about the providence of God. We spend too much time trying to figure out why things happen when we should start living our lives day by day. God has not promised us tomorrow. We may never know the full extent of God’s will all the time, but we must continue to serve Him unconditionally with honor, glory and praise.

I have surrendered to the fact that I had been self-consumed and not God-consumed. I vow to do everything in my power to represent my Lord in both word and deed so I can honor Him by the way I live my life before Him, my family and friends. Now, I will only serve Him wholeheartedly.

Nevertheless, at this point, I know it will only be through God’s grace, wis-dom and will that I will ever be able to complete the fulfillment of my faith, my vow to serve Him and His purposes rather than my own. “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.” Psalm 22:22

In closing I want to say that I as an adult, I am a sinner and accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

to be HIS HANDS Being in the US to personally train the Summer Teams really paid off. There was both in-class and practical time knocking on doors and distributing literature in their own CA neighborhoods. As a result, their maturity and confidence level were high

with little apprehension once in Ireland.

SKERRIES, CO. DUBLIN (Larry’s hometown) - Our first team was from Covenant Presbyterian Church, CA, stationed to work here with this small, young church-plant. Through door-to-door distribution, and many great conversations, three people professed faith in Christ and two families started to come to the church. As the weeks went on, it was also en-couraging to see the church put up “post it” notes with names of good contacts to pray for and follow-up on. There were talented musicians and singers amongst this team, which was a great encouragement to the believers.

FAMILY - The driving force behind making this furlough hap-pen was the compelling sense that we were running “out of time” with Kathy’s parents. At ages nearly 90 and 80, they had their usual physical issues, but nothing alarming was ex-pected.

In early November, Dad took a bad fall, which re-sulted in weeks of hospitalization for complete healing of an injured vertebrae, which then followed with getting Pneu-monia. Sorrowfully, we lost him, but he gained Heaven just two days before Christmas. The funeral was the end of Janu-ary, the most practical time for everyone preparing and at-tending, and happened to be exactly when Nathan’s 10-day visit was planned with tickets bought 6 months previous, resulting in all the family already present in CA. Although a very difficult and a sad time, many detailed answers to prayer came to fruition during those weeks preceding and following his passing – too many to list.

One of the more important things to take from all of this is that Dad was sharing the Gospel up to his last strug-gling breath with everyone he could in the Hospital, leaving a huge and lasting impression on all the workers espe-cially. Larry gave the eulogy at the well-attended funeral, including a very clear and direct Gospel message, which was Dad’s distinct request at his passing. A small tribute to Kathy’s Dad, his faith, and exemplary Christian life was writ-ten on our Facebook page.

Since Dad left us, Mom has needed guidance and care. It is amazing that we could be here to help for the re-mainder of our furlough. Kathy’s sister and husband, Karen

& Kirby, had planned to move back to the area and just weeks ago have been moved in with Kathy’s Mom to be a help to her – PTL!

CURRENT STATUS – Kathy and the girls spent the summer months still living in the CA Missions House, while Larry has been in Ireland with teams. In late August, Naomi was put on a direct flight to meet Larry and return to Ireland in time for the school year. Kathy and Bethany are remaining in CA for the following reasons:

1) Kathy suffers from Raynaud’s Disease – something she only developed a few years ago. Basically, it means she suffers from very painful frost-bite in her hands and sometimes feet that can happen up to four times in one day for many days. It is a reaction to cold and even just chilly weather. She will receive a 6-month treatment that is promising recovery with a trustworthy and com-mitted Christian doctor.

2) Bethany (age 19 ½) and attending college, has been in a committed relationship with a wonderful Christian guy (Luke) both long-distance and here locally in CA for the past 2 years. Honestly, we could not have picked a better suitor for our daughter! We absolutely love him, and he is the spiritually dedicated and responsible leader she needs. Engagement is on the near horizon with wedding shortly following.

3) Our agency has instructed us to raise our support quota before we return. For those of you who are not a part of Calvary/faith promise, we would be grateful if you could keep us in mind and consider mentioning us to your church or group. Kathy is open ANYTIME to speak-ing offers and would be happy to present the Ireland Ministry.

Our church-plants and outreach are growing in West Ireland, and we need all the backing we can get to keep this going through spreading the Gospel - one door & one person at a time.

We covet your prayers during this transitioning time - while Larry is on the battlefield for Christ in Ireland, and Kathy is holding down the fort in CA. Thank you also for praying with us that our support and physical needs will continue to be met divided between the two countries.

You all play an important role in our lives and ministry … With Love & Appreciation,

Together for the Kingdom, Larry & Kathy Dunne

PLASTIC BAGS???

Please bring in your plastic grocery/shopping bags: flattened and clean to the church office. We will use them to

make the mats for the homeless.

The Knitting Outreach Ministry meets on the first Saturday of the month at 10:00 AM until noon, in the church office.

Everyone who knits or crochets, or who would like to learn, is invited. Please feel free to bring kids, friends and neighbors...all skill levels and ages are welcome.

Gay Gomez chairs the group that focuses on sleeping mats for the homeless. They prepare the strips from plastic bags and assemble the mats. Gay hopes to in-volve school children of the area (Girl Scouts, Blue Birds, Cub Scouts, etc., look-ing for community service projects) in cutting the strips, and she is happy to teach the process.

Judy VanderHeide and Mary Silzel chair the group that focuses on yarn projects (hats and scarves for the homeless and military, lapghans for Kirkwood residents, preemie and cancer caps) and continue to share patterns, supplies and instruction.

Our speaker, Larry Maurer has a passion for history of Ameri-can music. Although Larry has worked in finance for over 30 years as a Certified Public Accountant and accounting pro-fessor, his calling has always been to teach music history. He founded the Timeless Melodies Foundation for Education Inc. to present colorful, memorable, multi-media education pro-grams about the Golden Age of American music to a wide variety of groups around the country.

There are many great Broadway musical composers, but Larry is going to speak on two special one’s, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. His presentation is rich in pictures, video clips, humor, history and most of all, the music that these extraordinary composers teamed together to produce. You will remember and enjoy many of the songs from Okla-homa!, Carousel, The Sound of Music, The King and I, South Pacific and more.

But whether we’re talking about the people who wrote the songs or the people who sang them, these timeless songs represent much more than biography, or even words and music. The work of these great composers shaped our na-

tion, simply because their work shaped, excited, romanced, stimulated, and inspired all of us. They tell us something about our own dreams, desires and fears, our own personal histories.

Larry has delighted a variety of audiences with his unique programs, from school children to senior citizens, and from music industry groups to the general public.

Bring a friend and enjoy an afternoon of music from the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein and learn the history of their talented lives and their beautiful music.

The Country Store will be open for you to browse through the many books, the lovely jewelry, pretty napkins and greeting cards for all occasions.

Reservations for a delicious lunch and wonderful music pro-gram may be made at the Women’s Fellowship table on the patio after worship service on Sundays, October 4 and 11 ($5 due at that time). Child care will be provided by request. Please bring a sack lunch for your child.

Would you like to strengthen your Covenant foundation

through connecting and building more relationships?

Cornerstones is a fellowship activity designed just for this

purpose.

How does it work?

Singles and couples of all ages who want to enjoy

fellowship and develop a relationship with more members of the church fam-ily. Two singles may want to become a team. Substitutes are also welcome. The more participants, the better it works!

A small group experience with only a 4-month com-mitment (October, No-

vember, January, February). Each month attend a potluck dinner with a different group. Serve as a host once.

2nd Sunday evening of the month, but the group par-

ticipants for that month can change the date if necessary so everyone can at-tend. It’s an important commitment.

Usually a supper meeting in homes, but it can be held at church or another

type of fellowship activity can be planned by the host for that month.

A great opportunity to get to know more members of the church. A fun evening

with meaningful fellowship, good food, a limited time-commitment, and no home-work makes Cornerstones a unique and special activity.

Sign up at the Kiosk on Sunday or call the coor-dinators, Bob and

Marcia Cooley (714) 974-3575.
