This is the very first article you’re reading. it was the very last one to be written. why? well, i wanted to be able to look back and remember all we’ve been through this past year to arrive at this time when finally our magazine is ready. All we’ve learned,

all we’ve heard, all we’ve seen and experienced; it’s almost impossible to put into words! But here we are, and i’ll do my best to tell you everything that has happened and everything that we believe will. This is the very first article you’re reading. it was the very last one to be written. why? well, i wanted to be able to look back and remember all we’ve been through this past year to arrive at this time when finally our magazine is ready. All we’ve learned, all we’ve heard, all we’ve seen and experienced; it’s almost impossible to put into words! But here we are, and i’ll do my best to tell you everything that has happened and everything that we believe will.

since my teenage years, i would always want to buy the magazines at the grocery store and look at all the “in” outfits, do all the quizzes and check out the latest news on my favorite artists (well.. not news.. just gossip). i would come in to the store with my mom and immediately run to one of the cash registries to grab one so i could read it and look through the pictures while i followed her through the aisles of the store. when we got down to payment time, my mom would always make me return the magazine to wherever i found it. “i won’t pay for something you just read. Put it back honey,” she would say. i wanted to copy the hair, the outfits and their make up. Those moments were when i realized that i would never look like them. And that made me sink into such a deep sadness. i wasn’t as blond, skinny and tall as all those girls in the magazine. They were all so thin, so pretty, so tall and so well dressed! i would always end up comparing myself and feeling hopeless. “i’m not as gorgeous as her!” everything, every single topic and theme in the magazine seemed totally unreachable for me. But every time i would go back to the grocery store, i would do the same thing, over and over again. why? Did i enjoy hurting myself? no, i don’t think so, i just thought magazines were fun. And i still do! And i think many girls think the same way. we all like fashion, makeup, recipes and even quizzes that make us think a little bit more about ourselves and our behavior or feelings.

An absolutely bizarre night in 2010 made me open my eyes to an issue that is affecting women’s lives around the world. i was woken out of my sleep by the sound of a girl crying. i didn’t know where it was coming from so i snuck over to my roommates room to see if it was her. exasperated after seeing it wasn’t, i went back to my room and started to pray. i don’t know how this happened, but i felt like i was being transported into a room where i found a girl crying desperately. suddenly i started feeling everything she was feeling and my heart just couldn’t contain the overwhelming depression, hurt, and hopelessness. A dream, vision, or trance, you call it, but it was real and it marked my heart forever. A few months later after not being able to shake the horrible feeling that transformed into an urgency to do something about that night, i started a research on women and self esteem. i found out that only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful. only 11% of girls globally are comfortable using the word beautiful to describe themselves. 72% of girls feel tremendous pressure to be beautiful. 80% of women agree that every woman has something about her that is beautiful but do not see their own beauty. And just so you can flip to the next page, a last one: more than half (54%) of women globally agree that when it comes to how they look, they are their own worst beauty critic. i was not the only one that had struggled with this horrible monster of low self esteem. i found out there were worse cases than mine and suddenly, little by little i started meeting girls who were going through these things. my heart felt like it would explode knowing that there are so many girls who don’t know how amazingly beautiful, talented, interesting and inspiring they are. This was it. i needed to do something about it.

This magazine is made for all the girls out there that don’t have perfect hair or make up all the time. The girls that don’t have the most amazing curves or flat stomach. The reAL girls that like to eat ice cream while you walk with a friend at the park. The normal girls that might have a pimple, a roll, or many pimples and many rolls! Because those are the real girls! not the photoshopped ones in a computer. i really think it’s time to have a magazine with real girls that talk about their lives, their successes, their frustrations, and their dreams. it’s time to have a magazine that shows you who yoU are and that yoU are beautiful because there is no one else like you!

welcome! This is us, this is you.. we are beautiful!- marialicia Jaramillo

self things couldn’t get any worse. was i ever wrong!

over the next few weeks people at school i had never even met before came up to me and asked, “Are you the girl who peed your pants on a date?” i tried to play cool and laugh it off, but time was the only thing that eventually separated me from being “the girl who peed her pants..”-sam

/ “so the other night i was at my friend’s house. we

were hanging out, eating, and playing games. one of the games we played was called “mad Dice”. if you’ve never played that game before, you should. But beware - you might lose some hair! right off the bat, the game is super intense. There were ten people playing this game around a tiny four-seater card table. we were all standing up around it, with barely any room to move. Part of the game was to snatch a pen out of someone’s hand and start writing numbers as fast as you can. needless to say, there were arms and pens flying everywhere. At one point during the game my boyfriend, who was standing right next to me, yells, “weave down!”. As soon as he said that, my friend erin fell on the floor in hysterically laughing. so i looked under the table and sure enough, there it was - a long blonde extension, just laying there on the floor. At that point i couldn’t help but fall on the floor in hysterics myself. such an embarrassing moment that part of my hair somehow got ripped out during a game...because now everyone knows my hair really isn’t that long! However, it was just too funny to stay embarrassed about.”- erin

/ “my most embarrassing moment? wow…

unfortunately it would have to be my first date. when i was in high school about 4 years ago i had a major crush on a guy in one of my classes. we began casually talking and hanging out. Then he asked me on our first coffee date to starbucks.

That day was beautiful—the birds were singing, the sun was out, i had my cute jeans on, everything was PerFeCT. my date was quite charming as well. i ordered a venti iced tea and drank every last sip as we laughed and talked. The time flew by and suddenly i realized i had to go to the bathroom—bad! The guy was so nice i didn’t want to hurt his feelings by interrupting him so i just kept listening. And listening. And listening. Then out of nowhere, he says something so hilarious i just could not stop laughing, though trust me, i tried! you see, i unfortunately have a very weak bladder, especially when laughing. Then, iT HAPPeneD.

i started peeing my pants! in public, on a date, right through my cute jeans! of course i tried my best to play it off and hoped to God it wasn’t as bad as i thought but just as i got up to excuse my self to the ladies room i heard my charming date scream...ewww, DiD yoU Pee PAnTs? my heart dropped and my brain couldn’t keep up with my tongue, as i said, “what, eww what is it?” As if i didn’t know. i tried my best to blame it on water drops dripping from the ceiling, but i don’t think it worked too well. There was literally a puddle of pee under my chair!needless to say the date was over and i was officially humiliated. As we got in the car i tried my best to keep from crying as he took off his jacket and laid it down on the seat for me to sit on. i thought to my

/ “okay so in highschool i wouldnt say i was

the coolest person but i did get invited to this cool people party once. so i go and people start dancing and ofcourse im kinda dancing and kinda talking with my friends at the same time when this extrememly attractive guy comes up and asks me if i wanted to dance and ofcourse i said yes. so we start dancing, and keep in mind that i decide im gonna rock these cute new skinny jeans i bought for the party. so back to dancing, we are dancing and im really having a good time when all of the sudden i bent down while we were dancing and my PAnTs riPPeD! All of the sudden i ran to my friends room with no change of clothes, and had to throw on a pair of soffee shorts. And when i came back out, he was gone. needless to say, i never talked to that guy again...”- Brit

embarrassing stories from us girls

Page 10: We Are Beautiful proof

words by: Daniel, Trae and JonathonPhoto by: KTo

Boys, boys. A creature that has plagued the hearts and minds of girls

since the dawn of time. okay, a little dramatic; but then again...so are

we. so dramatic in fact that we often times over-analyze, dissect, pick

apart, investigate, or downright stalk the mysterious intentions of “men of

interest” in our lives. we’ve been brought to a place in our society today

where the main tools we use in attracting the opposite sex are our looks.

But we’re on a mission to prove that looks are not the main bait used in

catching the ultimate catch. so here is an eye-opening interview in which

we pick apart the brains of three eligible young men, revealing the actual

things that reel them in.

Page 11: We Are Beautiful proof

How important is style to you?

Jonathon: “style is fairly important. i mean she has to be able to

tell if i’m matching or not. (because i’m color blind)”

What is the number one deal-breaker for a potential

relationship when meeting a girl?

Jonathon: “i would have to say if they looked more manly then

me. (if they were more muscular then me)”

Top five pet-peeves in girls

Daniel: “in no particular order: immature, whiney, needy, spoiled,

or just down right rude to people.”

How true is the rumor that boys look for girls that are like

their mothers?

Daniel: “not every boy has an amazing mother to look up to, but

for those of us that do i think it’s partially true. we see things in

our mom’s that are definite character traits we want to see in our

spouse. so to that degree, true.”

What is the number one “untrue” stereotype about men that

you would like to prove false?

Daniel: “That men don’t care. we care, we just show it different

ways than what a girl sometimes sees.”

Is it important for a woman to be proficient in money

management? And if she weren’t, would it be enough to send

you heading for the hills?

Daniel: “well i guess i listed spoiled as one of my pet-peeves

above so yes. A girl doesn’t have to have a degree in financial

management, but as long as there’s an appreciation for hard

earned money and the responsibility that comes with having

money than that’s fine.”

Long hair or short?

Trae: “i probably would prefer longer hair but its whatever works

for her and makes her look attractive. if she’s got the swag to

look attractive with long or short hair then she cant do what whe

wants with it. i believe she would be interested in knowing what

men think about her having short or long hair though before she

decides on a hair style.”

List the top five qualities you look for in your future wife.

Jonathon: “1.my future wife number one has to love god more

then she loves me. 2. i obviously have to be physically attracted

to her. 3. she has to be able to handle pressure very well because

there will be trying times in life and i need a wife that can act cool

calm and collective when pressure comes our way. 4. we have to

agree on atleast some of our favorite musical tastes. 5. she has to

have a call to the ministry.”

Is it better for your girl to be able to give you space when

you’re hanging out with the guys, or be able to hang out with

them as well?

Jonathon: “i think it all depends on the situation. i mean, some-

times i would like for her to be there hanging out with the guys,

but sometimes i would like for her to give me space just like i

would do if she were hanging out with her friends.”

A lot of people are saying it’s old fashioned for the man to

always make the first move. Do you agree or do you consider

yourself an old-fashioned?

Trae: “i believe the man should be more aggressive or more of the

initiator than the woman. But at the same time i would wait for

some type of clue or interest that is shown by the woman that she

is interested in me. Because that would make me feel assured in

my pursuit and i wouldnt make a fool of myself or cross bounda-

ries that should have never been crossed.”

What is your view on flirting? From both perspectives.

Daniel: “i don’t have a problem with flirting from either side, as long

as it’s real. if one person or the other becomes fake and tries to be

someone there not (i.e. over the top) then you’re trying to attract

the other person to something other than who you really are. not

a fan in that case.”

What are some qualities in a woman you would never com-

promise, and what are some qualities you would be willing to

look past?

Daniel: “one of things that Love allows is the ability to be able to

look past flaws or undesirable characteristics in the other person.

As long as they aren’t major spiritual or character issues, then other

things can be worked on. After all, we are all a work still in progress,

and will be for the rest of our lives.”

i grew up surrounded by the love of God. He was always my number one, the center of every decision. From seventh grade through high school i was in internships, joining

clubs, doing outreaches, and attending Christian conferences. i was the stereotypical “Jesus Freak”, and i couldn’t get enough wwJD bracelets. on the outside everything was perfect, i had everything together, and the people in my life looked up to me. But something began to creep into my head, my own little secret. And this secret grew into a desperate prison that began to take over my mind. so to rewind, i had always had “a little extra” as they say. nothing absurd, or even out of the ordinary, but just enough to feel apart from “normal”. other girls were slim and looked so beautiful in everything they wore. i felt like i had to work twice as hard to look half as good, and over time my thoughts grew more dramatic. it was all i thought about, a disease that took over my mind. i began to relate everything in life to my weight; my relationships, my job, my parents, my grades, even just my general success in life. i thought, if i were skinny i’d be way more popular. or, if i were just thinner that boy i’ve been in love with Forever would finally like me. you get the picture.

over time the “if only’s” turned into a desperate self-loathing. i avoided mirrors, refused pictures, and started to slowly shut myself off from people. i wanted to apologize to the people around me for having to look at unfortunate me.

one day in the last leg of summer before my junior year, something inside me snapped. i decided to finally do something about my weight, no matter how drastic it was. my diet became carrots and water bottles. i started dropping weight so dangerously fast i began to run out of clothes to wear because nothing fit me anymore. it was progress in my eyes but it was never enough. soon, things started changing. i began getting a lot of attention. Attention from boys who never noticed me, people who had never talked me before, and it became addicting.

The need to get thinner and thinner continued to grow inside me, and i was never satisfied. no matter how many people exclaimed with surprise how skinny i had become, i was still fat in my eyes. so i began searching for a way to take it to the next level. i researched eating disorders on the internet in order to learn from them. And so anorexia grew into binging and purging. it was hard at first, but i got better at it over time. when i hit a wall with my weight loss, i literally googled “how to be bulimic” to make sure i was doing it properly. i didn’t see anything wrong with it; it’s not a sin right? i’m not hurting anyone so…so what.

A few of my friends began to voice their concerns as i kept shrinking, but i shrugged them off. “i’m just on a diet,” i would tell them. The scary thing is that i believed myself.

Then one night at youth group, everything changed. we had an

Page 13: We Are Beautiful proof

amazing night of worship, i could tell that God was touching people all around me, but all i felt was a giant wall between me and God. As if my prayers were just slapping against a cold, hard ceiling. i became desperate. i started begging God for an answer, to be able to feel Him. Please God, i just want more of you. why are you not with me? why won’t you answer? And at that moment i heard so gently, and so sternly in my heart, “meagan, you cannot give love you do not have for yourself.” And at that moment, i realized that i had to make a decision. no matter the technicalities of whether it was wrong or not, this was something that was holding me back from God and the world around me. i knew that i had to give it up. That night i laid it down, and i’ve never gone back.

Almighty God; the creator of the sea, the sun, the stars, even the intricate way living organisms work together to survive, created you. Do you think he messed up? That when you popped out, God said, “oops!” no. you are perfect! it says in Jeremiah 1:5:

“BEFORE I FORMED YOU IN THE WOMB I kNEW YOU, BEFORE YOU WERE BORN I SET YOU APART…”

God knew exactly what he was doing when He made you. you are beautiful inside and out because you were created by the maker of the heavens. so get out there and live life, go on a picnic, take pictures, soak in the sunshine, because life is beautiful and so are you! relax in knowing that you don’t need to change yourself for people to accept you. The people that really matter are the ones that are there for you at your best and your worst, through thick and thin (excuse the pun). Be confident in who God made you to be, and play on those strengths. God has BiG THinGs for you, now go chase after them!

Chocolate Chip Scones

Ingredients• 2 cups of flour• 1/4 teaspoon of salt• 2 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder• 3 1/2 teaspoons of sugar• 1/2 cup of milk• 1/2 cup of butter• 1 egg• 1 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract• 1 cup of chocolate chips

what is an ideal saturday afternoon for you? maybe it’s shopping with friends, hanging

out at a coffee shop, tossing around a soccer ball, or just relaxing at home in your favorite pair of embarrassing pajamas? my ideal saturday afternoon is shopping with friends and a post-shop coffee break; reflecting on the items i found and considering whether it was a buy or not. you see, women are hunters; hunting for good deals and good prices – and in-between, you need a little break.

so what are you supposed to wear when you are doing your shopping at the mall? you definitely don’t want to wear high heals and lots of layers.

especially if you’re planning on trying on a lot of different outfits. Keep it simple. you don’t want to be frustrated by taking your clothes off and on repeatedly, so choose clothes that make the shopping day easy for you. Charica has chosen a layback and casual style for her shopping day. we love

her fun, flirty combination of leopard flats, a beautiful cream top, and her pop of color with the bright green tank underneath. To finish off her outfit she accessorizes it with a casual purse with trendy patterns. i would say – a great outfit for a shopping day!
