We are pleased as punch to announce the launch of the Kangaroo Island Food and Wine Awards 2016!

You are warmly invited to enter the Awards – recognising and encouraging excellence in the food and beverage industries on Kangaroo Island.

The following pages contain important information about the awards but first some key points:

There are five categories to enter:

The awards dinner will be held on Friday, June 17.

ENTRY

Who can enter

Entry is FREE, and open to Kangaroo Island-based businesses which meet the eligibility criteria for each category.

How to enter

Information about judging criteria and requirements is included in this information pack.

Entry forms must be downloaded from www.eatdrinkki.com.au, completed, converted to a pdf file, and uploaded to the website. Wine entries can be submitted through the website via an online form.

Receipt of your entry will be acknowledged by email.

Why you should enter

The Awards Program provides you with an opportunity to:

• Increase your business profile

• Showcase your success

• Add value to your brand

• Be rewarded for your hard work and business excellence

• Evaluate and benchmark your business

All entries will receive a judging report – important feedback to help you improve your business.

Award winners will receive:

• A one-year membership to the KI Food and Wine Association, including website listing, access to tools, newsletters, information and more.

o a prominent trophy and certificate to display at your premises

o exclusive use of the Kangaroo Island Food and Wine Awards winner logo via a media file

o a door sticker of the Kangaroo Island Food and Wine Awards winner logo

• Increased brand awareness through publication in print media; social media exposure through the Kangaroo Island Social Media Project; online coverage through the Kangaroo Island Food and Wine website www.eatdrinkki.com.au

• Entrants in the Wine category will have access to gold, silver and bronze medal labelling, if their wine is judged within those classifications.

Taking your staff members to the Awards Dinner is a great way to reward them for their hard work and to build your networks in the industry.

Entry and Judging process

• Entries are open from March 1 until 5pm on March 31. Entry is through the Kangaroo Island Food and Wine website, www.eatdrinkki.com.au. Information and entry forms can be downloaded from the website. Completed entries must be uploaded through the website as a pdf file. A word-count guide is provided with the criteria.

• Uploaded document must be in 12-point type, maximum five images. Total document size not to exceed 5MB.

• Each entry will be acknowledged by email.

• All complying Farm Gate and Cellar Door Experience, and Dining Experience entries will be visited by the judging panel, without notification.

• Business Development entries may be shortlisted and selected for an interview by the judging panel, to support the written entry.

• All Wine entries must be sent for judging (see special conditions for Wine entries). Six wines will be selected as finalists and featured at the Awards Dinner.

• The Kangaroo Island Food and Wine Awards winners will be announced at the Awards Dinner to be held on Friday June 17 at Cygnet River Racecourse .

Judging Panels

• Entries in the Awards Program will be assessed by best-practice industry judges. To ensure credibility, independence and quality of the process, the judging panels will involve no representatives from the Kangaroo Island Food and Wine Association, Tourism Kangaroo Island or the Kangaroo Island Industry and Brand Alliance.

• Names of the members of judging panels will not be published.

• All judging will be completed using a points scoring system.

Conditions of Entry

• Entry is open from March 1 and closes 5pm March 31. No late applications will be accepted

• Entry is online only, at www.eatdrinkki.com.au

• Entrants must meet all criteria as outlined under each award category and the nominated experience must have been offered during the qualifying period which is March 1, 2015, to March 1, 2016.

• Shortlisted entrants must agree to an interview by the judging panel and may be required to provide further documentation.

• Entrants selected for a site visit by a judging panel must be open as usual during the judging period.

• All supplied photos remain the property of the applicant. Kangaroo Island Food and Wine Association will seek rights to use images if applicable

• All entries are treated with strictest confidence and judges will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Special conditions for Kangaroo Island Wine of the Year category

• Entrant must have a minimum supply of one pallet of the entered wine, for commercial re-sale.

• Wine must be labelled as from Kangaroo Island and must contain at least 85 per cent Kangaroo Island fruit.

• Entrant must submit two bottles of each wine entered, which must be labelled accordingly. Wine must be delivered to Kangaroo Island Food and Wine Association, c/o Megan Harvie, Box 553, Penneshaw 5222, by April 1.

• Entries must be finished wines and the vintage must have been completely bottled when the entry is submitted.

• Finalists must supply wine at wholesale rates for the Awards Dinner.

Kangaroo Island Dining

This category is open to all businesses offering an in-house dining experience. It is an award that recognises exceptional customer service, the provision of food and beverages, and the availability of Kangaroo Island produce on the menu. Entrants may include hotels, restaurants, cafes or cellar doors.

Word guide: 200-500 words is sufficient to address each criteria. Document must be in 12-point type, maximum five images. Total document size not to exceed 5MB.

Farm Gate and Cellar Door Experience

This category is open to all businesses offering a Farm Gate or Cellar Door Experience. It is an award that recognises exceptional food and beverage experiences at the source, excellent customer service, attention to the region’s Brand values; and is a profitable commercial business.

Culinary Tourism

This category is open to all Kangaroo Island businesses offering a culinary tourism experience and/or servicing the tourism industry. It is an award that recognises significant contribution to tourism through the provision of regional food and beverages. It is open but not limited to Kangaroo Island tourism operators, caterers, farm gates and cellar doors who provide for a food and wine tour experience.

Judges will be looking for strong leadership, and a sense of culture. How does your leadership drive the success of the business?

Kangaroo Island Wine of the Year

This award recognises excellence in wine production on Kangaroo Island. It celebrates our best wines and their winemakers. Gold, silver and bronze placings will be awarded in each category.

Red Young release style (under 4 years)

White Young release style (2014 and 2015 vintage)

Sparkling Young release style (2014 and 2015 vintage)

Gold, silver and bronze placings will be awarded in each category.

Gold 18.5 to 20.0 points

Silver 17.0 to 18.4 point

Bronze 15.5 to 16.9 points

Two finalists will be selected from each category and these wines will be served at the Awards Dinner, where the Wine of the Year will be announced.

Finalists must supply wine at wholesale rates for the Awards Dinner.
