Hello Friends,

As I have said time and time again, we owe a debt of gratitude to
our volunteers. We would not be the strong community that we are
now without the help of the dedicated volunteers at the Center.
With this in mind, I am glad to tell you that the Senior Tax Work
Off program from the Town of Duxbury is back up and running, after a break in 2021
because of the pandemic.

The Tax WorkOff Program offers a reduction on property taxes for eligible residents 65 and
older in exchange for service hours in one of the Duxbury town departments. This is a chance to
do some meaningful community work and save some money. The program also enhances the
community at large by tapping into the skills of older adults in Duxbury, a winwin!
If eligible, your volunteer hours will be worked in 2022, for a Spring 2023 reduction in property
tax.

The parameters of the program and the application process have changed a bit. To qualify for the
program you must be at least 65 and a Duxbury resident. You also must:

provide income verification the applicant’s gross income from all sources may not exceed
$61,000 for the year preceding the application
and provide documentation that all assets (exclusive of the domicile) do not exceed
$100,000.

If you’re interested in pursuing the Tax WorkOff program, visit the Town’s website under
Volunteer Opportunites, https://www.town.duxbury.ma.us/employmentvolunteeropportunities
for the proper forms and applications to complete, or call the Assessor’s office at 7819346010.

To help you with this process we will be hosting dropin help hours at the Center for Tax
WorkOff applicants on Monday, October 4
from 1:00 am to 11:00 am.

Stop by and see if the Duxbury Tax WorkOff Program is right for you for 2022!

Be well!
Joanne

Join us on Thursday, October 21 from 3:00 PM4:30 PM to honor and thank
Donna for her important contributions to the Senior Center.
Light refreshments will be served.

Veterans’ News October, 2021
The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has finally approved a Veteran ID card. This
card is available to all Veterans who served the appropriate amount of time and have an
honorable discharge. You can apply by going to the VA web site; www.va.gov and in the
search window in the upper right of the home page enter “VA Veterans ID card.” Pick the appropriate site
and you then will have to establish an online account in order to access the form. You will need a copy of
your DD214. An easier route is if you already have a disability rating by the VA, you are eligible for VA
healthcare. If you have applied and been accepted, go to the Brockton VA, bldg. #3, first floor, and you can
have them produce a picture ID. This will suffice for a Veteran’s ID as well.
I still have a couple of books left on the 50
th
Commemoration of the Vietnam War named, "A Time to
Honor.” Please call me to reserve a copy.
Veterans can now take advantage of DOD travel deals. This includes hotels, flights, packages, cruises etc.
The site is: www.AmericanForcesTravel.com You will need to verify your eligibility with DOD.
Veterans from all eras are reacting to the events in Afghanistan. You are not alone. There are many online
sites to help and allow you to discuss your feelings. You may search for sites at: www.va.gov
I do plan of having a Veteran’s breakfast to honor those who served on November 12, 2021(the day after
Veteran’s Day) here at the senior center, COVID permitting. Be on the lookout for further, more detailed
news soon.
There is nothing more important than good eye care as we age. If you are in VA healthcare you are eligible
for this service at NO COST to you. The facility at the Brockton VA is “top notch” like going to a local eye
store. You will be seen by a clinician, receive a prescription for glasses, pick your frame and within about 10
days by mail receive you new glasses. Call 7748261106 for an appointment.
If you have questions about your earned military benefits call Mike Thorp, Duxbury VSO, located at
the senior center; 7819345774 X5740.
