Sometimes it’s hard to keep going when you’re a carer…..

If you are caring for someone it can be hard to think about your own needs. You may have a specific issue or immediate problem to work out, or want help to think about your worries and feelings more generally. Our Counselling Service can provide the structure and reflective space you need. Following an initial assessment meeting with the counsellor to discuss your needs and whether counselling is right for you, you’ll be offered regular, confidential sessions lasting 50 minutes. These will normally be weekly for a minimum of 6 sessions, and may be extended up to a maximum of one year as agreed between you and your counsellor. We understand that as a carer your life can be unpredictable, but successful counselling depends on regular contact so we ask that you make a commitment to attend on a regular basis, apart from unavoidable emergencies.

If you’re interested in attending please contact Mary Goodwin on 0208 646 7515 or email

[email protected]

We are please to welcome back Jenny Mo who will be providing Reiki to our carers on a regular

basis

What is Reiki? (pronounced Ray-Key) Reiki is a healing therapy. Reiki can be translated as universal life energy (ki also known as chi, qi, or prana in other cultures) and in some translations as divine energy. Reiki is a completely natural non-invasive and gentle therapy that works on all levels - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual ie. as a whole person, harmonising and balancing. It is great for relieving stress and also boosts the immune system, most people find it a relaxing yet energising experience. Reiki has no negative side effects, and requires no concentration or action from the recipient apart from being open to the positive effects of the healing energy. (see listings for dates available

Calling all cricket fans!

Come along to our men's group on 15th May and meet Colin Babb the author of :-

They Gave The Crowd Plenty Fun is a lucid study of the impact of West Indian cricket on those of Caribbean birth and descent in Britain. It traces the relationship between cricket and the Caribbean diaspora from the start of mass immigration to Britain from the Caribbean in the 1950s. Colin also reflects on his life as a second generation West Indian boy in 1970s/1980s Britain with traces of humour.

Colin Babb describes himself as a ‘BBC’, a British Born Caribbean. His family are from Guyana, Guadeloupe and Barbados. He works as a radio/online producer and journalist for the BBC and as a web producer for Orleans Park School, Twickenham. He joined the BBC Test Match Special commentary team during the West Indies v Pakistan ICC Champions Trophy match at The Oval to discuss his book with Tony Cozier and Simon Mann. Signed copies of the book will be available to buy during the afternoon. (For more info see listings)

If you are a lady that loves cricket , on this occasion you are welcome to join us at the men's group.

Have you thought about starting your own small business? Would you be interested in attending a course of half day workshops, aimed at carers on route to self-employment?

All levels of knowledge would be covered from basic, intermediate, and advanced and there would also be the chance to find out about Social Enterprise. We are thinking of running workshops later this year but do need an idea of numbers before we commit. If you feel this is something you would be interested in please contact Debbie Kilby on 0208 646 7515 or email [email protected]

Dementia Detectives’ Workshops and Peer Support Group Once a month CSM offers a Support Group at Drake House, Wimbledon Guild for carers of people with dementia – this is run by Shelley Lynch, in partnership with Paula Tucker from the Dementia Hub. Recently we held a special workshop there, to inform carers about the Enriched Model of Dementia Care (very person-centred care based on a specific research model), and delivered by Alise Kirtley. The session was popular and very well-attended, leading to discussion amongst the carers as to how they could engage in an ongoing forum. Now, CSM* is able to build on that, in order to run a series of task-focused peer support groups for dementia carers. Using a pre-designed workbook as well as other recommended materials, participants will use the research and learning from the Enriched Model, to help work out how best to overcome their own specific challenges and manage the practical and emotional care of their relative at home. Bring your own personal 'case studies' to the group and together we'll be 'Dementia Detectives'! Alise Kirtley will attend 3 of the sessions (to launch, review and sum up learning) and there may be other contributors. Carers attending will gain skills, experience peer support and hopefully continue to meet as a self-help group, after the life of the more formal group.

When: 9 sessions in June and July 2014 Venue: Wimbledon Guild Workshop Consultant: Alise Kirtley (formerly Change Manager at Nightingale

Hammerson, in association with Bradford [University] Dementia Group) For all sessions we meet from 1.30 - 3.30 p.m. On Wednesday dates, join us at the Wimbledon Guild's very own Cafe from 1.30 for tea/coffee and a chat before the group (menu available for those wishing to purchase snacks or light lunch). Dates: Monday 2nd June: Drake House , Wed 11th June, Wed 18th June, Wed 25th June, Wed 2nd July Monday 7th July: Drake House, Wed- 16th July, Wed 23rd July, Wed 30th July

difficulties. Each group will enable carers to seek support, exchange ideas and learn more about positive ways of working with

Carers enjoy lunch on the Mental Health Trust For the forth year running we would like to thank the South West London and St Georges Mental Health Trust for funding the annual lunch to thank those who care for someone with a mental illness. The event was held at the Taste Restaurant in the grounds of South Thames College and was attended by 79 people. Speeches were made and glasses raised to the wonderful work that carers undertake. A carer who attended comments:- ‘Thank you for organising such a lovely lunch for the Carers .The cooking was delicious & the service was excellent .The conjurer's acts were truly magic. How did he do it? One of the best things was seeing all the young people on the catering course, cooking & serving [including those with special needs] taking their jobs very seriously & doing their best to please. It was very rewarding watching them work’ Thank you to those who came along and took part in the raffle raising £156 for CSM.

‘Writing Ourselves’ A group of mental health and dementia carers recently completed a 4-week creative writing workshop in partnership with Create Arts. The course was described by participants as ‘so enjoyable’ and an experience that ‘gave me worth’.

War zone Glowing embers Flames lick at open wounds Tears dampen this vision of hell Friendship’ A cinquain written by Annette. ‘Retreat Warm gentle breeze Silver sea glistening waves Flying fish dart towards aqua skies Natural peace’ A cinquain written by Carol. A journalist from the Wimbledon Guardian attended a

reading of poems during the final session, and described

carers as ‘unsung heroes in our community’. An anthology

of poems written by the group will now be published, and

the carers plan to go on meeting up to continue their

friendship and further develop their writing skills.

A big Welcome to Caz Gordon who has recently joined us as a volunteer

I joined CSM on 31st March 2014 helping our

lovely admin team, I had been working for Leadership Development Ltd a Learning and Development company for 15 years as an Office Coordinator and previously worked as an accounts assistant for E&Y. After having a

break from working for a couple of years due to illness, now well and ready to start working again and was thrilled to be offered volunteer work with CSM as this is exactly the kind of organisation that I wanted to work for. I am currently studying ‘Introduction To Counselling’ hoping to do all the stages to become a qualified Councillor one day as I have always loved helping people. I have lived in Mitcham for 19 years, love spending time with my family, friends, Godchildren, enjoy cooking and feeding everyone, concerts, movies and travel and watching the odd reality show is my guilty pleasure.

WHAT IS “NHS CONTINUING CARE”?

NHS Continuing Healthcare is free care outside of hospital that is arranged and funded by the NHS. It is

only available for people who need ongoing healthcare and meet the eligibility criteria. NHS Continuing

Healthcare is sometimes called fully funded NHS care.

NHS Continuing Healthcare can be provided in any setting, including a care home, hospice or the home of

the person you look after. If someone in a care home gets NHS Continuing Healthcare, it can cover a part

or the whole of their care home fees, including the cost of accommodation, personal care and healthcare

costs. If NHS Continuing Healthcare is provided in the home of the person you look after, it can cover

personal care and healthcare costs.

To be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare, the person you look after must be assessed as having a

"primary health need" and have a complex medical condition and substantial and ongoing care needs. Not

everyone with a disability or long-term condition will be eligible. Guidance says that the assessment for

NHS Continuing Healthcare should be "person centred". A decision about eligibility should usually be made

within 28 days of an assessment being carried out.

Some people have been told that as long as a person lives at home an assessment regarding NHS

Continuing Care cannot be undertaken. This is incorrect as the eligibility criteria do not depend on where

the person with care needs lives, but the extent of their health care needs and the resulting social care

needs as shown above.

Quality Awards - Promoting Partnership Nomination! On 10 April, CSM went posh. We were

invited to attend the annual Ceremony for the

presentation of Quality Awards to staff and

partners of the South West London and St.

George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, because

of our work with the Older People’s

Community Mental Health Team. The Team

runs a weekly Memory Clinic at which people

who may have a diagnosis of dementia and their carers are seen by Consultants. CSM joins with the Trust

and the Alzheimer’s Society to co-produce a carer and patient pathway which has dramatically improved

access to the vital services of both organisations, and at a much earlier stage – one carer whose partner had

just been diagnosed, told us what a relief it was to leave knowing that she would be supported and not have

to cope alone. Carers can self-refer or are very often referred by their Consultant, whilst at the Clinic – and

carers who are already registered can update us on their progress and seek support for specific issues that

may arise as time goes on.

Shelley Lynch from our Adult Carers Service and Paula De Souza from Alzheimer’s Society work together to

offer a comprehensive range of services. When the Merton Older People’s CMHT and the Memory Clinic

were nominated for a Trust Promoting Partnership Award, both agencies were invited to attend the

ceremony at Wandsworth Civic Suite. Neither Shelley nor Paula were able to attend that evening so Sue

Batley (Adult Services Manager) and Anita Wales (Dementia Support Manager for Merton and Wandsworth)

went along to join Matthew Willoughby (Team Manager) and Dr. Yasmin Daghistani (Consultant) from the

CMHT. Sadly, we were pipped to the post for the Award by Wandsworth Access to Child and Youth Mental

Health, but we’re proud to have been one of only four nominees in this category across the entire five

boroughs of the Trust. So two cheers, at least – and more importantly we intend to continue to aspire to

excellence in our partnership working for the timely support of dementia carers.
