TRANSCRIPT
“Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated.” - Paul Rand “Design is thinking made visual.” - Saul Bass “A designer is an emerging synthesis of artist, inventor, mechanic, objective economist and evolutionary strategist.” -Richard Buckminster Fuller “In nature, light creates the color. In the picture, color creates the light” - Hans Hofmann “When you make something no one hates, no one loves it.” - Tibor Kalman “Asymmetry is the rhythmic expression of functional design. In addition to being more logical, asymmetry has the advantage that its complete appearance is far more optically effective than symmetry.” - Jan Tschichold “As we become more mature we will learn to master the interplay between the past and the present and not be so self-conscious of our rejection or acceptance of tradition. We will not make the mistake that both rigid modernists and conserva-tives make, of confusing the quality of form with the specific forms themselves.” - Alvin Lustig “To design is to plain and organize, to order, to relate and to control. In short it embraces all means opposing disorder and accident. Therefore it signifies a human need and qualifies man’s thinking and doing.” - Josef Albers “Graphic design is the paradise of individuality, eccentricity, heresy, abnormality, hobbies and humors.” - George Santayana “The grid system is an aid, not a guarantee. It permits a number of possible uses and each designer can look for a solution appropriate to his personal style. But one must learn how to use the grid; it is an art that requires practice.” - Jo-sef Müller-Brockmann “If you look after goodness and truth, beauty will take care of itself.” - Eric Gill “Power is an interesting word because if you take away its negative aspects from its meaning and then try to understand what it means, you will find out that the word is
synonymous of ‘ability to manage a plan’. If you try to define the word ‘design’ you find that has the same meaning. Design and power concepts are identical.” - Milton Glaser “Simplicity of form is never poverty, it is a great virtue.” - Jan Tschichold “The life of a designer is a life of fight. Fight against the ugliness. Just like a doctor fights against disease. For us, the visual disease is what we have around, and what we try to do is cure it somehow with design.” - Mas-simo Vignelli “It is no secret that the real world in which the designer functions is not the world of art, but the world of buying and selling.” - Paul Rand “To give emphasis only to beauty makes me think of a mathemat-ics that deals with positive numbers only.” - Paul Klee “There are three responses to a piece of design – yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.” - Milton Glaser “I see graphic design as the organiza-tion of information that is semantically correct, syntacti-cally consistent and pragmati-cally understandable.” - Mas-simo Vignelli “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” - Steve Jobs “Design is thinking made visual. “ Saul Bass “I never design a building before I’ve seen the site and met the people who will be using it.” - Frank Lloyd Wright “Practice safe design: Use a concept.” - Pe-trula Vrontikis “Graphic design will save the world right after rock and roll does.” - David Carson “Less is more.” - Mies van der Rohe & Buckminster Fuller “Practice safe design: Use a concept.” - Petrula Vrontikis “Design is a good idea.” - Émi-gré “The life of a designer is a life of fight: fight against the uglinesss.” - Massimo Vignelli “Graphic design will save the world right after rock and roll does.” - David Carson “Design is mored than just a few tricks to the eye. It’s a few tricks to the brain.” - Neville Brody “The artist is not a different kind of person, but every person is a
different kind of artist.” - Eric Gill “If you do it right it will last forever.” - Massimo Vignelli “It is very important to embrace failure and to do a lot of stuff — as much stuff as possible — with as little fear as possible. It’s much, much better to wind up with a lot of crap having tried it than to overthink in the beginning and not do it.” - Ste-fan Sagmeister “To design is to communicate clearly by whatever means you can control or master.” - Milton Glaser “The only important thing about design is how it relates to people.” - Victor Papanek “Information anxiety is the black hole between data and knowl-edge, and it happens when information doesn’t tell us what we want or need to know.” - Richard Saul Wurman “Less is more only where more is no good.” - Frank Lloyd Wright “You cannot not communicate.” - Erik Spiekermann “Objects do not have meaning. But if an object is thoughtful we project meaning onto it in daily life.” - Karim Rashid “Attractive things work better.” - Donald Norman “Design is easy. All you do is stare at the screen until drops of blood form on your forehead.” - Marty Neumeier “It’s not rocket science. It’s social science—the science of understanding people’s needs and their unique relationship with art, literature, history, music, work, philosophy, community, technology, and psychology. The act of design is structuring and creating that balance.” - Clement Mok “I make solutions that nobody wants to problems that don’t exist.” - Alvin Lustig “Ugliness does not sell.” - Raymond Loewy “[Design is] a plan for arranging elements in such a way as to best accomplish a particular purpose.” - Charles Eames “Design can be art. The JCCC Graphic Design program is an intensive professional program for students who have a desire to create and learn. The program prepares you to work in the professions of design and advertising. It takes a global worldview, demands intellectual rigor, and the ability to solve problems and think critically while meeting the standards set by the graphic design profession to inspire, inform, serve and communicate meaningfully in the world.
The curriculum consists of 68 credit hours leading to an associate of applied science degree. Instruction is provided by an experienced, dedicated and passionate faculty committed to developing students’ knowledge and skill in design and typography, creative problem-solving, and the use of materials, processes, tools and equipment. State-of-the-art studios and computer equipment are provided in support of this goal.
We educate graphic designers for future leadership and success
Winner of the American Advertising Federation 2010 National Student Silver ADDY®, Regional Student Gold ADDY® and Kansas City Best of Student Mixed Media/Gold ADDY® awards for Creatures of Creation Senior Recruitment Showcase.
Brian Sedey, Josh Wilkinson, Kate Munchof, Casey Rudolph and Rob Mitchell – Mixed Media Campaign, Poster and Interactive Website.
Ties to the professional industry and strong alumni support are important to our program. Our professional advisory committee, among the best in the field, draws from advertising agencies, design and corporate firms. These professionals work with the faculty each semester to keep our graduates current and in demand.
Our faculty stays in close touch with former students, constantly seeking their input on current trends and skills. This knowledge helps the graphic design program adjust its curriculum, ensuring that we continue to graduate students with the requisite skills for the evolving market.
Networking with local professional organizations such as American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA)
and American Advertising Federation (AAF) for further educational opportunities and making connections is encouraged. Our success as providers of quality education is demonstrated year after year by the many awards garnered on a local and national level.
The placement rate of JCCC Graphic Design graduates has consistently been very high. Graduates most often enter the field as junior art directors. Within three to five years graduates are being recruited by the premier and high grossing advertising agencies and design firms such as Bernstein-Rein, HNTB Architects, VML and Hallmark Cards.
A vibrant connection with alumni and the profession
Casey DenBleykerCLASS OF 2009DESIGNER, FREELANCE PORTLAND, OR.(TOP MIDDLE)
“I moved from Alaska and discovered the Graphic Design program at JCCC and was impressed by both the quality and affordable cost of the program. After three years of study, I graduated in 2007.
The program exposed me to the KC job market through its involvement in AIGA KC, AAF KC, portfolio review, the graduating/recruitment showcase and by bringing in practing professors. I was offered my first job by a JCCC adjunct professor who owned a small creative agency in Kansas City. After the showcase I was able to get multiple interviews at large and small companies.
After a great experience working in Kansas City, my family and I moved to Portland, Oregon where I now run my own creative company, Red Car Studio. Today we offer creative services to companies and organizations all across the country.

A representative listing of employers who have hired graduates includes:
“The JCCC Design program has an impressive track record! They continually provide top-notch, ready-to-work design graduates who are well-rounded and prepared in all areas of Graphic Design: concepting, typography, color use, software proficiency and production. The curriculum is second to none in the metropolitan area. Every year, JCCC students win many awards in area advertising and creative competitions and go on to impressive design careers.

Adam Scitz, Anthony Magliano and Brandon WilsonCLASS OF 2000
Anthony Magliano joined Bernstein-Rein advertising agency in 2002. He recruited Brandon Wilson and Adam Seitz to his team where they work together as they did while classmates and friends in the graphic design program.
Bernstein-Rein is one of the top three advertising agencies in Kansas City and one of the largest independently owned advertis-ing agencies in the United States. Their client list includes McDonald’s, Beauty Brands, Hostess Brands, PetSmart and Farmland. Their awards are numerous - national ADDY Awards, Yahoo!’s “Big Idea Chair” award and an international Webby award. They define success beyond such accomplishments; they are passionate about design and derive tremendous satisfaction simply working in design on a daily basis. Their success in the industry and their enthusiasm for design reflect positively on their JCCC education.
Wilson, also an adjunct faculty member at JCCC, says, “As a team, each member plays off the strengths and ideas of the others.” Together, they put aside individual egos and work by collaboration in a “walls-down type of environment where they harbor creativity and good ideas.” Or as Magliano says “it is even more rewarding when the client is happy and analytics show the work is effective for the client’s business.”
“My advice to aspiring design professionals is to build your portfolio, attend AIGA Kansas City meetings, and go to First Fridays; generally, see what else is out there and find a way to get your foot in the door through an internship,” Seitz suggests, “as an adjunct at JCCC, I remind students that the more you push yourself, the stronger person you’ll be.”
For these fellow graduates, design has been a great career choice. Their varied backgrounds in activities from music to snowboarding brought them a wealth of experiences that enhance their work in design. For Seitz, the gratification is about solving problems with a creative twist, “it is really rewarding and satisfying at the end of the day to visually see what you’ve worked hard to achieve,”
Invest in your future, but don’t get strapped with massive debt. JCCC affords an excellent education and represents a smart investment. The cost of a JCCC design education is a fraction of the cost of comparable four-year institutions and art colleges. Ask professionals in the Kansas City industry, and they will tell you that JCCC students are comparably or better prepared for the design and advertising market.
Value with a quick return on your investment
“When I decided to go back to school for a Graphic Design degree I looked for a college that would provide me with the best education for the cost. What I found at JCCC was much more than that. I found a staff and faculty that were dedicated to preparing students for their success in the real world. While still in school, I was able to start my career as an artist at Hallmark and have carried this knowledge and experience with me throughout my career. “
Gary BarberCLASS OF 1995SENIOR DESIGNER, FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF KANSAS CITY & ADJUNCT PROFESSOR, UMKC, DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY
Imagine yourself in a welcoming environment where creativity and innovation abound, rigor is fused with ambition, and your peers elevate and challenge your thinking. We have exceptional resources; our state of the art studios and computer labs are the best in the area. Student-to-teacher ratios in our studio classes are never larger than 18:1, and all classes are taught by excellent full-time and practicing adjunct professors.
A stimulating and impressive environment
JCCC, a member of the prestigious League for Innovation in the Community College, offers an unparalleled two-year design education. On campus, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art houses one of the best and most inspiring collections of modern art in the Midwest. JCCC also takes the lead in sustainability issues, offering opportunities for community activism in the environmental arena. If involvement with sports or club activities is of interest, JCCC offers extensive opportunities for you.
“The real world doesn’t ask if you know your stuff - they just expect it. JCCC’s Graphic Design program gave me a tremendous foundation of knowledge that I could immediately put to use in my current position - from conceptual thinking to technical considerations. Thanks to an incredible group of faculty, adjunct professors, lab assistants and other students, I am confident in my skills and abilities.
”Shanon WilleCLASS OF 2011DESIGNER, BLACKTOP CREATIVE
Our program has been established for more than 30 years and offers a unique opportunity for professional feedback on an ongoing annual basis. Our portfolio review process gives students an independent evaluation of their progress from creative professionals in the field. It
also offers scholarships to top-ranked students, gives feedback about currency and quality of student work to faculty, and consistently shows the design and advertising community the quality of work our students produce. This in turn helps with future job placement.
Unique opportunities for advancement beyond the classroom
“An important thing to note about the curriculum is how well balanced it is. The fundamental foundations are there; items such as typography, color behavior, basics of illustration and size/shape relationship. At the same time, once that foundation is made, real world projects and applications give students an opportunity put their skill sets to the test.”
“Every time I check back in with the program I’m impressed with the facilities available to the students. The software and hardware are in lockstep with trends of the industry; the programs are always what’s just been released to the market. This isn’t just about what’s most current. It also makes what you learn more viable long term.”
Ryan KramerCLASS OF 1999ART DIRECTOR, CUSTOM COMMUNICATIONS,ADVANSTAR
The JCCC Graphic Design program encourages volunteerism and community outreach. Our students get involved with projects for nonprofit organizations where they apply their knowledge and make a difference in the community. These “real world” projects give students unique portfolio pieces demonstrating not only the creative process but also their grasp of strategy and marketing practices.
“JCCC’s Graphic Design program prepared me for the real challenges in this field. I find myself having more knowledge of print and production than my colleagues who paid for a four year school. That says a lot!
”
Katie LonerganCLASS OF 2005STUDIO MARKETING MANAGER, BEAU VAUGHN PHOTOGRAPHY
The Graphic Design program places students in paid Internships, giving practical on-the-job training. Students who meet the department’s
established criteria are selected to represent the program in the community. Please see the curriculum for more details.
Students nearing graduation also have the opportunity to show their portfolio at a Graduating/Recruitment showcase held each spring in the Crossroads area of Kansas City. At this show industry professionals seek talent for potential job matches. Many students secure employment or establish leads to employment as a result of participation in our “Senior Showcase.”
“The professors at JCCC highly encourage students to get an internship, and I am so glad I listened. I got hired to intern at a great advertising and marketing company where I was able to apply the things I learned in class in a real environment. This experience was invaluable, and the internship turned into a full-time position before I even graduated from the program.

If you believe you have desire and a creative mind
“Graphic Design is my second career. After years in accounting, I realized that I wasn’t happy. I needed to be creative.
The Graphic Design program was perfect for me, I worked while I was a student and I always felt comfortable and welcome. My fellow students were so diverse – recent high school grads, second and even third career path students like me. There was such great camaraderie.
After graduation, I went right to work in the field. I have a great job and I am happy being creative! I owe it all to hard work and the great education that I received at JCCC
”
We pride ourselves in our diverse student population. Many incoming students have degrees in other disciplines and arrive ready for the rigors of the program. JCCC also welcomes recent high school graduates with a mature demeanor and a drive to excel.
We look for the most creative, investigative minds willing to immerse themselves in
the theory and practice of graphic design. JCCC tailors your education to meet the demands for jobs in advertising and design.

Maiko Ku zunishiBorn and raised in the western part of Japan until she was twelve,
Maiko Kuzunishi now resides in Kansas City and works as a
freelance graphic designer, Illustrator and a mom of beautiful a daughter,
Leela. In the late 1980’s, her father’s business brought Maiko and her
family to the United States from Osaka. After taking a commercial art class
at her high school in Plano, Texas she was driven to pursue an education
in Design. Maiko attended the Kansas City Art Institute from 1994-1998,
majoring in design. At KCAI, she studied all aspects of design, including
graphic and industrial design. After graduating with her Bachelors of
Fine Arts in 1998, Maiko worked at several Kansas City firms including
Willoughby Design group, Compuware, Bernstein Rein Advertising, and
MK12. Seeking a way to express her creativity she started a new side
project called Decoylab in 2000. Under the new label, Maiko produced
her own artwork to show in gallery spaces, as well as screen printed
T-shirts, calendars, melamine plates and all sorts of things from her own
home. In 2006, Maiko started freelancing graphic design keeping the same
name. Since then, Decoylab has been featured in numerous magazines
nationally and internationally such as Parents, Lucky, Nylon, Design sponge,
Real Simple, Cookie, Josh Spear, Dooce and many more.
Can you tell me a little bit about what led you to a career in graphic design and art? In total honesty, I chose a
career path as a graphic designer
out of necessity and what was
offered to me right after
graduating from KCAI. My parents
paid for my college tuition and I’d
never worked before or held any
important position. Being in the
“real world” was scary and I felt a
great responsibility to make a living
and be on my own two feet.
How do you balance a busy home life with your career?
I stopped thinking about my
career after my daughter was
born. I feel greatly responsible for
bringing her into this world and
my priority in life became clear. So
I work and enjoy working but it’s
not as important as taking care
of my daughter and maintaining
a peaceful relationship with my
husband. When it’s time to pick
up my daughter from daycare, I
walk away from any work. It made
it easier for me to ‘balance’
between work and life. But
parenting is a lot of work! I would
love to find the time to do nothing.
If you could go back to school and take any other courses, what would you like to take?
If I could go back to college now,
I would love to learn more about
business. I have pretty good
instinct about things, when it comes
to selling and handling of money. I
feel like I lack knowledge overall in
this area that could help me take
my business to the next step.
How would describe yourself as an artist? Do you consider yourself a Graphic Designer? A fine artist? An Illustrator? Crafty person? I don’t. I’ve never really seen myself
as an artist. I don’t feel necessary
to plug myself into a category. I
can say that I am an honest person
and describe myself like that, but I
never really considered myself as
an artist, much less thinking what
kind of artist etc. It seems limiting
to me. I can say that I am more of
a designer than an artist. I think of
designer as someone who designs
something for other people and
that’s what I do. I like to come up
with ideas that help other people
or make other people’s ideas
come into being.
