It should last 15-20 minutes. Each group of students will be given a poem to study and practice all week. On Day 4 the teacher will select a reader. It is important the students do not know who is chosen. This ensures each student will put forth their best effort during Days 1-3. n OVERALL VALUE Elementary students struggle with

fluency because they have a hard time thinking about what it sounds like when they read aloud. Their brains are busy recognizing sight words, decoding unknown words, watching for punctuation, and comprehending the text. By recording students reading and having them use a student-friendly rubric to evaluate themselves and their peers, they are actively thinking about and learning to recognize the different aspects of fluency.

This program brings the fun to reading aloud. Students get tired of repetitive readings but when they are rehearsing for a performance they maintain a higher level of enthusiasm.

We FLIP for Fluency is not a complicated program that takes a lot of preparation. It is easy to set up, fun to do, and pays huge dividends in student achievement.

n OBJECTIVES Students will increase their oral

reading rate, accuracy, and expression t h rough repea te d read ings o f poetry in preparation for a recorded performance.

n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS

LA.1.1.5.1: The student will apply letter-sound knowledge to decode phonetically regular words quickly and accurately in isolation and in context.

LA.1.1.5.2: The student will recognize high frequency and familiar words in isolation and in context.

n MATERIALS• Flip Camera

• Flip Tripod

• Poems for the Very Young by Bob Graham*

• Read Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young by Jack Prelutsky*

• Computer (with a projector is ideal but not necessary)

• Student copies of the selected poems

* Poetry books can vary to match the instructional level of the students. These are good for a 1st or 2nd grade class.

n DIRECTIONS This program consists of f ive

lessons that are repeated each week (or as needed). The first four lessons are 10-15 minutes each and can easily be incorporated into a Reading iii block., Calendar time, or Circle Time. The fifth lesson is the culmination of the week. It should last 15-20 minutes.

The lesson plan is written with the assumption that the classroom is set up for cooperative learning and students are divided into ability groups.

Each group of students will be given a poem to study and practice all week. The goal is NOT to memorize the poem. Students should be reading the poem so they can focus on fluency. On Day 4 the teacher will select a reader. It is important the students do not know who is chosen. This ensures each student will put forth their best effort during Days 1-3. With the help of their group they will use the Flip camera to record their poem. On Day 5 the class will watch all the performances and the teacher will provide positive feedback.

Pre-planning: Pre-select a poem for each group.

Make sure the poem is within the students’ independent-instructional range.

Day 1: Meet Your Poem

Read each poem aloud to the entire class. Then assign each group a poem. Provide each student a copy of the poem. Allow student approximately 5 minutes to practice their poems with their groups. Circulate around the room and provide assistance to students as needed. Students should take their poems home to practice.

Day 2: Round Robin

Students should work in their groups to practice reading their poem. The Kagan Cooperative Learning Structure Round Robin works very well on this day. Circulate and provide coaching and feedback as necessary. Students should take their poems home to practice.

Day 3: Partner Up

Students will continue to work on their poems. In this lesson each group will divide into pairs. The pairs will partner read the poems providing help and feedback to each other.

Day 4: Show Time!

This is the day that students will record their poems. Select one student from each group to be the “reader”. (It might be helpful to keep a simple spreadsheet to make sure each student has an opportunity.) Select another student to be the “recorder”. The other members of the group will be “helpers”. They can provide sound effects, etc… if appropriate. The group will then record the poem. Don’t worry, the FLIP camcorder is simple enough that even 1st graders can complete this step on their own!

Day 5: Poetry Party!

This is Poetry Party Day! Dim the lights and gather the students around the computer or screen if you have a projector. Show the video clips of each group’s representative reading their poem. The kids LOVE to see themselves on T.V. Use this opportunity to point out what good fluency is. Bring their attention to the rate, expression, and phrasing.

n EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT

Teacher The teacher will use the We FLIP

for Fluency Teacher Rubric on Day 5 – Poetry Party Day to assess each reader on Rate, Accuracy, and Expression. The rubric can also be used by the teacher on Day 4 as the students are partner reading their poems.

Student An important piece of We FLIP

for Fluency is the self-evaluation component. Each student will assess themselves during the Day 5 – Poetry Party. The teacher and the student can discuss the scores and this will help the student learn what the teacher is looking for in regards to fluency.

Teachers of different grade levels might want different poetry

books depending on their classroom’s needs. The books listed

are appropriate for K-2.

A computer is also needed for the program. If a teacher has a

projector it would be nice but it is not necessary.
