14th Sunday in

Ordinary Time

We are all familiar with the refrain, “You have put on Christ. In him you have been baptized. Alleluia, alleluia!” In Baptism, we “put on” Christ. In putting on Christ, we put on all that Christ is and represents: hope, faith, and love. We are no longer bound to the sins and failures of the flesh, that part of us that resists God and relies exclusively on human means. It also means that we are not in debt to our past, complete with its sins, failures, regrets, fears, and unfulfilled dreams. There is always hope. In putting on Christ, we put on God’s vision for the world, for all of His children and for us. We have been given a road map to guide our paths and a blueprint to follow for our life’s journey.

There is no need for regret, and we are not tethered to our past. Is there anything in your past that you regret? Any decision or memory that continues to haunt you? We have all made mistakes, and we have this uncanny ability to continue beating ourselves up over things we can no longer do anything about, except learn from them. To put on Christ means that I can now bring God’s unconditional love to my hurtful memories and sinful choices. With each new moment and every new choice, I can start clean and live in freedom.

Imagine adults when the disciples were preaching and baptizing. They came to baptism not really knowing who they were, with pasts that were broken, seeking to live the joy of the Gospel they heard spoken to them and wanting the love they saw witnessed in the lives of those who believed. What tremendous celebrations their baptisms must have been! They could now have the support of a community, full participation in the sacraments of the church, focus for their disordered lives, consolation, healing, and an understanding of what life is really all about.

Our lives are meant to be celebrations of the Spirit we have received in Baptism. How does that joy get expressed in and through you? When we truly understand that we have put on Christ, our burdens can become much lighter. It is odd that so many Christians look like they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if those weights could be lifted and joy experienced!

Prayer for Protection of Religious Freedom

O God our Creator,

from your provident hand we have received

our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of

happiness.

You have called us as your people and given us

the right and the duty to worship you, the only true

God,

and your Son, Jesus Christ.

Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,

you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the

world,

bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel

to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us

in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.

Give us the strength of mind and heart

to readily defend our freedoms when they are

threatened;

give us courage in making our voices heard

on behalf of the rights of your Church

and the freedom of conscience of all people of

faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,

a clear and united voice to all your sons and

daughters

gathered in your Church

in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,

so that, with every trial withstood

and every danger overcome—

for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,

and all who come after us—

this great land will always be "one nation, under

God,

indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

FROM FATHER KEVIN

As Catholics, we have a long tradition of engagement in the political process as a means of putting our faith into action. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with vitriol and harsh language, often directed at people themselves. When personal attacks replace honest debate, no one wins. This kind of attack, no matter the reason, only serves to further divide our communities. As Catholics, we must model a better way. We invite you to join the Civilize It campaign by taking the pledge below as a way to promote civility, love our neighbors, and build community. Civilize It is about making room in your heart for those with whom you disagree. We are called to recognize that each one of us is a beloved child of God and to respond in love to that reality. Civilize It is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even when we disagree, and to put faith in action by bearing witness to a better way forward. You can take the pledge online or:

I PLEDGE:

1. Civility: To recognize the human dignity of those with whom I disagree, treat others with respect, and rise above attacks when directed at me.

2. Clarity: To root my political viewpoints in the Gospel and a well formed conscience, which involves prayer, conversation, study and listening. I will stand up for my convictions and speak out when I witness language that disparages others' dignity, while also listening and seeking to understand others’ experiences. 3. Compassion: To encounter others with a tone and posture which affirms that I honor the dignity of others and invites others to do the same. I will presume others’ best intentions and listen to their stories with empathy. I will strive to understand before seeking to be understood.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults—RCIA Becoming Catholic

We are blessed with several people preparing to receive Initiation Sacraments this year. As for now, plans are to have Initiations on Sunday August 9 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rites of the Presentation of the Creed and the Presentation of the Our Father celebrated on preceding Sundays. Morgyn McCalligan will be completing her full initiation as a Catholic by receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Tim Rosian and Phillip Bowser will make their Profession of Faith, be received into the Church, and participate in the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Kaylee Datz will receive all three Sacraments of Initiation; Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. And four members of the Argenti Family will become Catholics through the Sacraments of Initiation: Lynn, Elizabeth, Caitlin and Cecelia. Please pray for and encourage all those preparing to be fully united with Christ and His Church. PSR Parish School of Religion We are currently planning for PSR in the fall. We are hoping to offer multiple options for parents and their children. Options could include in-person classes, home-schooling and a form of virtual classes. A great deal needs to be ironed out in conjunction with State, local and church guidelines. Registration will be online and at no cost to St. Justin Martyr parishioners. Please look forward to continuing updates.

The feast of Saint Benedict is on July 11, he is the Patron Saint of: Europe, kidney disease, monks, poisoning, happy death, school children. He was a hermit in Europe founding 12 monasteries, “The Benedictine Monks”. He wrote “The Rule” a book of principles for monks to live in helping those to seek Christ in their life.

PRAYER OF INTENTION TO ST. BENEDICT

O, Glorious St. Benedict, sublime model of virtue, pure vessel of God's grace! Behold me humbly kneeling at thy feet. I implore thy loving heart to pray for me before thy throne of God. To you I thee I have recourse in all the dangers which daily surround me. Shield me against my enemies, inspire me to imitate thee in all things. May thy blessing be with me always, so that I may shun whatever God forbids and avoid the occasions of sin.

Graciously obtain for me from God those favors and graces which I stand so much in need, in the trials, miseries, and afflictions of life. Thy heart was always so full of love, compassion, and mercy towards those who were afflicted or troubled in any way. Thou didst never dismiss without consolation and assistance anyone who had recourse to thee. I therefore invoke thy powerful intercession, in the confident hope thou wilt hear my prayers and obtain for me the special grace and favor I earnestly implore (mention your favor) if it be for the greater glory of God and the welfare of my soul.

Help me, O great St. Benedict, to live and die as a faithful child of God, to be ever submissive of His holy will and to obtain eternal Life.
