We Help Families Grow Stronger

About Spirit of a Child Foundation

The Spirit of a Child Foundation is a growing voice

for the country’s most vulnerable citizens — children.

One vision guides our mission — to help families

grow stronger. We’ve seen first-hand the tremendous

voids in the system hindering the development of

millions of children nationwide. Our objective is

to identify and overcome the obstacles impeding

parent-child relationships. Poverty; acrimony

between parents; substance abuse; and violence in

homes, in schools and on the streets are just a few things affecting children. The legacy

for them is too often a new generation of dysfunctional families, attachment disorders,

low self-esteem, depression, gangs, teenage pregnancies, school dropouts, and much

more. It’s time to break the cycle.

We believe that children are life’s most precious gifts and that each child should have

joy, laughter and a future filled with possibilities. Nurture a child’s inner spirit with time,

presence, gentle encouragement and plenty of love, and that child will grow to be an

emotionally healthy adult. Through our funding, programs and partnerships, we focus

on issues that government programs do not currently or adequately address. We help

established organizations provide the necessary tools and valuable knowledge for

parents to love their children and help them understand that developing a strong family

unit is important. We offer tools that give parents the ability to create a nurturing bond

with their children – one that will last a lifetime.

Spirit of a Child Foundation

Founded and incorporated on December 16, 2004, in Tallahassee, Florida, by Sharon M. Wynn, the Spirit of a Child Foundation (SOAC), is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, IRS Tax ID 20-2023465. The foundation’s mission statement is “We Help Families Grow Stronger” with a goal to end generational cycles of dysfunction in families by building and strengthening relationship bonds between parents and their children. The foundation has no paid employees and an all-volunteer force assists with all events.

Parent Child Project

How We Help Our Families

Each year, our combined fundrasing efforts help us conduct the Spirit of a Child

Foundation’s Parent-Child Project. The Parent-Child Project is a nature retreat for

selected families to participate in environmental education and activities that require

family members to work together and build healthy communication skills. The criterion

for the families is that they are in a situation of financial hardship, such as a parent

living with cancer, a family living in extreme poverty or a military family adversely

affected by combat who may suffer from a physical or emotional injury, including

post-traumatic stress disorder or the loss of a parent.

Our first Parent-Child Project invited families from UrbanPromise in Camden, NJ, and the

Colorado Office of Children, Youth, and Families to John Denver’s Windstar Foundation’s

EARTH camp in Old Snowmass, CO. We’ve continued through the years by treating our

families to life changing experiences, exciting adventures and new friendships. We’ve

been there during natural disasters by providing them with essential living items. We’ve

been there to counsel during trying times. With the help of our donors and volunteers,

we hope to continue our mission and provide our growing number of families with the

support and opportunities that will truly make a difference.

Bryan White

Bryan White’s prolific recording career began in 1994 with the release of his self-titled certified-Platinum debut followed by back-to-back platinum selling albums Between Now and Forever (1996) and The Right Place (1997). He released six No. 1 singles – “So Much for Pretending,” “Sittin’ on Go,” “I’m Not Supposed to Love You Anymore,” “Rebecca Lynn,” “Someone Else’s Star” and “From This Moment On,” which he recorded with Shania Twain – along with eight more Top 40 singles.

His list of honors include a Grammy, recognition from the Country Music Association (1996 Horizon Award winner) and Academy of Country Music (1996 New Male Vocalist winner) plus five CMT Awards, Canadian Country Music Awards and TNN/Music City News Awards. In 1998, White was voted one of People magazines “50 Most Beautiful People.”

His songwriting credits include cuts with Wynonna, LeAnn Rimes and Joe Diffie, while Sawyer Brown (“I Don’t Believe in Goodbye”) and Diamond Rio (“Imagine That”) both reached No. 3 on the charts with songs penned by White.

Whether he’s on stage at the Opry or somewhere in Asia, White has secured a spot in the musical landscape of country music. He’s always been known as a singer and a

songwriter – namely grooves and melodies – and now he’s also regarded for his work producing other artists in the studio. Since first making his way to Nashville, White has grown and matured as an artist. White is fortunate to have established a legacy thanks to the U.S. fans who initially supported him.

Now his newfound success in the Philippines has taught the married father of two to never hesitate when it comes to writing and recording music with broader brush strokes. He recently returned to Manila to celebrate the one-year anniversary of #AlDub – the affectionate nickname for the love affair of Alden and Yaya Dub – and is finishing up work on an EP he said is inspired by his success in the Philippines. The release will feature an acoustic version of “God Gave Me You” along with a pair of new tracks – “Never Get Around to It” and “Finally Home” – and might include an additional live bonus track.

Boo Radley

Peter Cooper, Music Editor of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, has this to say about Boo Radley’s original music: “’Boo Radley’ is something special. I really enjoy this music and want to hear much more. It’s really, really good.”

Boo Radley’s original songs highlight the songwriting skills, sophisticated harmonies and guitar work, and true passions of the acoustic duo, comprised of Michael Shawn Turner and Patricia Matson-Turner. The two have been in the music

business for decades. At the close of the ‘90’s, Michael achieved stardom in Manila, Philippines, in a band called Battery. Gracing a desk in Michael and Patty’s living room is a Nu107 Rock Award 2000 that Michael received as “Guitarist of the Year, Michael Turner of Battery.” For many years, Patty performed in the Mid-Atlantic Region as the lead singer of various rock and variety cover bands.

The two met in Tallahassee, Florida, and became fast friends. Michael asked Patty to help write a song he had been commissioned to write, and in one afternoon they came up with what is now the title track of their first commercial EP, “More than Meets the Eye”… (not for a minute did either of them foresee even performing the song, much less making it the title track of a Nashville-recorded EP!)

The recording took place in December 2016 at the iconic Treasure Isle Recorders, Inc. in Nashville, Tennessee. Owned by Fred Vail, legendary

manager of The Beach Boys, Treasure Isle has been the recording base of such industry giants as Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, and Jason Aldean, to name just a few. At the engineering helm of Boo’s EP was Peter Coleman, yet another industry giant.

The EP is being enthusiastically received by music industry executives, radio and print personnel, as well as everyday listeners.

Donovan Chapman

Experiencing a Donovan Chapman performance is like that blast of adrenaline that hits when the roller coaster whips out of the loading zone, except the ride never subsides. Now Chapman is continuing the ride with a new EP featuring all new recordings he just completed in Nashville, Tennessee called Another Try. Chapman has always put his heart and soul into his music and it shows in the new songs, to name just a few, “Brotherhood”, “I’ll Take the Fall” and “Another Try”.

To his credits, Chapman has recorded studio albums for Curb Records and Category 5 Records and charted four singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. He peaked with the No. 42 “House Like That” in late 2006 – early 2007.

Chapman’s career has been a winding road. His mother exposed him to music from her native Hawaii at an early age and he soon learned to play the ukulele. At 17, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. His 11 years in the military included six in Pararescue. During his leave time, he met Mike Curb, head of the Curb Records label, and was soon a signed artist.

Chapman released his first single, “There Is No War,” in 2003. He dedicated the single to families of American soldiers who had died overseas. Chapman recorded two albums for Curb Records shortly after receiving a honorable discharge in Afghanistan from the United States Air Force. He has also released a self-titled EP, followed by his first full album, I Am America.

In 2007, Chapman signed his second record deal with Category 5 Records. He released his first single for Category 5, “House Like That” with producer Billy Joe Walker, Jr., in late 2007. Chapman released a second single, “All I Need,” in 2008, shortly before terminating his relationship with Category 5 Records.
