Multiflo technology is a proprietary process developed by Veolia Water Technologies. The Multiflo technology combines chemical precipitation, advanced Turbomix® crystallization, clarification and sludge thickening to remove hardness, alkalinity, silica and heavy metals.

Multiflo is ideal for softening water with up to 20,000 ppm total hardness (as CaCO3 ), producing an effluent with low concentrations of scale-forming constituents and a highly concentrated sludge that can be easily dewatered.

MULTIFLO™ Technology

High-Rate Water Softening and Clarification

In the Multiflo softening process, the water first enters the rapid mix tank where coagulant and softening chemicals are added. Precipitation and enhanced crystal growth occur in the next unit process, aided by the complete mixing of the Turbomix® reactor. Polymer addition and gentle mixing in the flocculation tank allows floc to build, increasing settling velocity.

The bulk of the solids settle rapidly, and the clear water rises through the lamella tubes, which capture any smaller particles carried into the supernate. The clarified, softened water is suitable for various process uses. A portion of the sludge is recycled to the precipitation chamber to enhance crystallization, while the excess thickened sludge is discharged from the system.

Technology Benefits

• High Quality Effluent: Excellent effluent quality with low concentrations of Total Suspended Solids (<10 ppm), Hardness (<20 ppm as CaCO3), Silica (<10 ppm) and Iron (<0.5 ppm).

• Compact Footprint: The system footprint is 10 to 20 times less than that of a conventional precipitation softening system. Hydraulic loading rates range from 5-15 gpm/ft2.

• Packaged Technology: Shop fabricated, pre-piped, pre-wired, modular package units are available up to 1,000 gpm (35,000 bpd). For larger capacities, field erected configurations are designed.

• Dense Sludge: Crystal growth kinetics promoted in the process generates a dense thickened sludge (5-20%) that can be dewatered directly and easily.

• Flexible: Very flexible in operation with the ability to handle wide variations in influent flow and water quality.

• Robust: The hydraulic design of the system components promotes optimum flow distribution and consistent operation, achieving high water quality.

• Rapid Start-up: The system can be fully operational within 30 to 60 minutes.

• System Automation: The process is fully automated for ease of operation with the capability to integrate the chemical feeds and sludge dewatering systems.

Turbomix®- A Technological Innovation

The Turbomix draft-tube reactor is a key component that facilitates the softening process and minimizes the system footprint. Using computational fluid dynamics modeling, Veolia designed the Turbomix to optimize the mixing efficiency, ensure optimum utilization of chemical additions, and enhance reaction kinetics. The Turbomix provides:

• High level of homogenization, reducing retention time

• Removal of bypass and dead zones to achieve classical precipitation efficiencies in a smaller tank

• Complete mixing of the influent water with chemicals and recirculated sludge

• Increased pumping efficiency

• Reduced chemical and power consumption

• Easy control and maintenance of the reagent injection system

• Maximum crystal growth
