evades Nazi persecution, eventually escapes Austria and lands in

Hollywood. Despite her celebrity status, Hedy is also a scientist

and has an idea that may help the country. Read and discover

how! The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 16,

CHRISTMAS

Next to the yearly celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord

the Church holds most sacred the memorial of Christ’s birth at

early manifestation. On Wednesday, December 25, we celebrate

the birthday of the Lord Jesus. Wishing friends a “Merry Christ-

mas” is a popular greeting, but it is also an expression of faith

with hearts full of love on Christmas Day and every day in the

Christmas Season, which culminates with the Feast of the Bap-

tism of the Lord, scheduled on January 12, 2020.

CHRISTMAS GIFT TO OUR PARISH

In your packet of envelopes an offering envelope for Christ-

mas is included. This offering usually represents an extra sacrifi-

cial offering from the donor. Your parish relies on your prayers

and generosity for various provisional education and charitable

endeavors of our church. May this year’s Christmas Offering

further reflect your sacrificial spirit and love for your parish and

its ministries, as we continue to share our gifts through worship,

education, fellowship and community outreach.

CHRISTMAS FLOWER OFFERING

An envelope in your packet set, positioned with this offertory

packet, may be used to assist us in the purchase of poinsettias,

Christmas trees, wreaths and other decorations to beautify our

sanctuary during the Christmas season. Your offering may be

made “in memory of” or for “the intention of” a loved one. You

may write the intention on the envelope itself. Additional enve-

lopes are in the vestibule. If you haven’t already done so you

may return your envelope with the regular collection through De-

cember 25 (no second collection for this purpose). All envelopes

with intentions listed on them will be placed near the manger

scene during the Christmas Season.

CHRISTMAS “OPLATEK” WAFERS

Among the Christmas Eve traditions observed in the home,

one of the more popular of those of Eastern ancestry is the break-

ing and sharing of the “Oplatek” at Christmas Eve dinner. In

response to the many requests, the “Oplatek” (four to an envelope

is available in the narthex). The story of this tradition is also

printed on the envelope.

You will notice that each envelope contains three white wafers

and one pink wafer. Farming families traditionally share the

pink wafer with the livestock, since it was the animals in the sta-

ble in Bethlehem that first “witnessed” the birth of Jesus. Any

free-will offering may be deposited in the basket next the wafers.

Dear Immaculate Conception Parish Family,

In the Gospel of St. Luke, which is read at Midnight Mass, we hear, “and suddenly there was a multitude of

the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to

those on whom his favor rests.”

Along with our family and friends let us be mindful of how much God loves us. As we rejoice in the birth of

Jesus this Christmas, let me say that I rejoice in being part of this parish family. I am thankful to Fr. Michael for

his servant’s heart and for our Deacons. I am thankful for the staff of our parish and school. Wishing all a very

wonderful and blessed Christmas.

Fr. Jay Toborowsky

ICS MORNING PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

A Morning Preschool Program is being offered for 3 & 4 year

olds. Preschool at ICS prepares children for future learning

through readiness. Give your child the gift of a strong religious

and academic foundation in a loving and nurturing environment.

To learn more about the preschool programs at ICS please visit

the school website: www.icsannandale.org or call the school of-

fice at 908-735-6334.

MOMS GROUP

Remarkable things happen when moms come together on

Mondays from 9:00-11:00 am in the ICC Parish Hall (lower level

of the church). Join us for a time of relaxed conversation, snacks,

and community with other moms of babies, toddlers, and elemen-

tary kids. Space is provided for children to play with toys they

wish to bring along. For more information contact us at

[email protected].

RHYTHM AND RHYME

The ICS Early Education Programs will once again offer

Rhythm and Rhyme for children twelve months to three years old.

Give your child the head start he or she needs to ensure their read-

iness for preschool with this fantastic program that meets once

each month. Little ones will have so much fun as they socialize

through story time, singing, dance and so much more along with

their parent/caregiver, all in a friendly Catholic school environ-

ment. The next session will be held on Tuesday, October 15,

11:00 am-12:00 pm. To learn more about the programs available

at ICS please visit the school website at www.icsannandale.org or

call the school office at 908-735-6334.

TUITION ANGEL

What is a Tuition Angel? We at Immaculate Conception

School are proud of the quality education we offer to our fami-

lies. In order to fulfill our mission by fostering in each child,

Spiritual Growth, Academic Excellence, and Moral Integrity, we

must properly fund our school.

We invite you to join us in prayerfully becoming an Immacu-

late Conception School Tuition Angel. Your support will make a

tremendous impact on the lives of students for generations to

come. We have been blessed over the years at ICS by people

who value a Catholic education and want to help provide for

those less fortunate. We have some “angels” who donate funding

toward tuition for ICS students. The Tuition Angel Fund is an

ongoing program where families in need are helped as situations

arise. If you are interested in contributing to this fund, please

contact Laura Vitelli, Director of Advancement, 908-735-7319,

or via email at [email protected].

START 2020 WITH THE BLESSED

MOTHER

Join us on Saturdays during January and February to learn

about the 7 Sorrows of Mary. We will meet in Mary House each

Saturday after the 9:00 am Mass. We will be using The Seven

Sorrows of Mary by Romanus Cessario O.P. It is availbe from

www.Catholiccompany.com or www.ignatius.com for $12.95.

Each session will stand on its own so don’t worry if you can’t

attend every week. For additional information, contact Maureen

Kolano, 908-310-4306 or via email at [email protected].

HAITI PROJECT

An estimated 80% of the population of Haiti lives below the

poverty line searching for enough food to eat, clean water to

drink, and a safe place to l ive. Haiti is a bleak place for children.

Two-thirds of all Haitian children suffer from malnutrition. Life

expectancy is a mere 51 years for men and 54 years for women.

Clean water for drinking, cooking and bathing is in short supply,

which continues to fuel the spread of diseases. Thank you for

your continuing support of our mission to build safe homes in

Haiti. Your gift helps impoverished families out from a life of

squalor and degradation, and restoring their hope for a better fu-

ture.

ATTENTION CUB SCOUTS

In anticipation of Scout Sunday on February 9, you are urged

to learn more about God thru Boy Scout religious emblems:

Light of Christ-Grades 1 & 2 or Parvuli Dei—Grades 3-5. Work-

books may be purchased from Flemington Department Store or

online at scoutstuff.org. Signed completed books are due at the

rectory by Tuesday, January 21, 2020 along with ten dollars for

the medal. Interviews will be scheduled with the parish priests

over the next two weeks.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

Immaculate Conception School will celebrate National Catho-

lic Schools Week January 26-February 1 with Masses, and a

variety of activities for our students, school families, parishioners

and community members. Through these events Immaculate

Conception School focuses on the value Catholic education pro-

vides to young people and its contribution to our church, commu-

nities and our nation.

Immaculate Conception School invites prospective students,

their families and community residents to one of two Open Hous-

es at 9:00 -11:00 am on Sunday, January 26, 2020 or at 9:00-

11:00 am, on Wednesday, January 29, 2020. Come visit with

our Teachers, students, administration and parent ambassadors to

learn about the ICS education programs, extracurricular activities,

and more, as taught in our faith filled school community. Appli-

cations for the 2020-2021 school year will be available. Please

visit the ICS website at www.icsannandale.org.

ICS LITTLE LAMBS PROGRAM

An afternoon session of our 2-year-old “Little Lambs” pro-

gram has been added to the ICS Early Education Programs.

Little Lambs is a positive first school experience for your 2-year-

old, in a warm, loving Catholic school environment. The pro-

gram is designed to encourage independence in a fun-filled class-

room environment as the teacher and support staff foster growth

in all areas of development. A limited number of seats are availa-

ble in the program. To learn more about the Little Lambs pro-

gram visit the school website at www.icsannandale.org or call the

school office at 908-735-6334.

Yet “do not be afraid,” the angel says. Do not be afraid. Why?

Because we celebrate the birth of “Emmanuel, which means

‘God is with us.’” Before Jesus’ earthly ministry would begin,

Jesus would lose his father, Joseph. God is with us in our grief.

Wherever Jesus went, he stirred up controversy and faced down

challenging personalities. God is with us in our stress

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on Sundays at

1:15 pm. A Preparation Session for the persons (Godparents invited)

takes place prior to Baptism and is held on the First Friday of each month

at 7:30 pm. A Catholic Godparent must be a practicing Catholic, i.e. one

who is free to receive the Sacraments in the Catholic Church, who has

been Confirmed and can receive a “Letter of Good Standing” from their

parish. One Godparent could be a baptized Christian (not baptized in the

Catholic Church). That Godparent will be noted in the Church record as

a Christian Witness. Contact the Parish Office at 735-7319 for all ar-

rangements and before the selection of Godparents.

THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE

The Sacrament of Penance is available every Saturday, except Holy

Saturday, from 11:30 am-12:00 nn and from 4:30-

5:00 pm.

THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE

The Common Policy for the Diocese of New Jersey requires a period

of preparation for the Sacrament of Marriage, which includes sessions

with the parish priest or deacon and participation in either the Pre-Cana

Conference or the Engaged Encounter Weekend. Therefore, arrange-

ments with the Parish Office should be made up to one year in advance,

and before any social plans are finalized.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

Arrangements for pastoral visitation and Holy Communion to the sick

and infirmed at home can be made by contacting the Parish Office. Cath-

olic Charities are assigned by the Diocese of Metuchen for patients in our

area hospitals. Our Parish is responsible for Rolling Hills Nursing Care

Facility. Emergency sick calls anytime.

lege/Vocational School. These scholarships will be awarded to individu-

als who have demonstrated the qualities of a “Good Samaritan” through

activities they have been involved in with the Church, the community

and charitable organizations. They are not academic scholarships.

Senior Students Attending North Hunterdon High School: Parishion-

ers in their senior year may apply for a “Good Samaritan Scholarship”

through the Guidance Council Office. Two scholarships will be award-

ed—one to a young woman and one to a young man.

Senior Students Attending Any Other High School: Applications for

this scholarship are available in the vestibule of the parish and also on the

Knights of Columbus Council #6245 web page www.kofc6245.org. You

must complete and submit the application form by Thursday, April

9, 2020

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER

Why not treat yourself to a Marriage Encounter Weekend? A

Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend gives you the time and

tools to revitalize romance, deepen communication, and nourish

the spirituality in your marriage. The next weekend is scheduled

for January 24-26, 2020. Please register by January 10, 2020, as

space is limited. Please call 1-732-904-9636 for registration and

additional information. Visit www.aweekendforyourmarriage.org

IMPORTANCE OF USING WEEKLY

ENVELOPES

In addition to simple recordkeeping, the primary reason we

utilize any envelope system at all is so we can produce statements

for parishioners at the end of each year for income tax purposes.

Secondarily, because of the large size of our parish, this system

allows us to track, although imperfectly, the regularity of attend-

ance. Since we cannot possibly know each individual person-

ally, this system is used to assist the pastor when persons re-

quest a sponsorship letter for Baptisms and Confirmations

when they are not personally known to him. The sponsorship

letter requires the pastor to attest to the fact that the sponsor

fulfills their fundamental obligation as a Catholic by partici-

pation in the sacramental life of the Church, which includes

our Sunday Mass obligation. It is precisely for this reason we

request individuals to utilize our envelopes whether or not they

choose or are able to donate since we can verify regular participa-

tion should they not be familiar to us. Faith Direct offers the

option of electronic giving in place of weekly envelopes. Simply

visit the Faith Direct website at www.faithdirect.net or call the

Faith Direct Offices at 866-507-8757 using the parish code

NJ123.
