“it’s time to gather the drummers”
To: The Bay Christian Family Church Drummers
What do you see?
You live in faith of rhythm every
day.
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
What is timing to God?
Light is a wave
God created timing.
The first thing He did!

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament (The expanse of
the heavens; the sky. ) of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years

What do you see now?
• Light, dark. Time. Sun rise, sunset,,, seasons, hours, years, minutes, seconds, beats, life, death, timing, rhythm -- beats per minute.
• We measure our entire existence against time (from light & seasons).
• When you play drums you connect with more than just an instrument.
• You are tapping into the very fabric of this existence that God made.
In the bible…
• "Praise Him with the timbrel and dance.. " Psalm 150:3-6.
• "Begin the music, strike the tambourine... " Psalm 81:2.
• "Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and harp." Psalm 149
Background of the Drum
• One of the oldest types of percussion instruments.
• Origin may have been the sieve used for sifting grain.
• Earliest visual depiction is the Frame Drum -- comes from a cave in Catal Huyuk in Turkey, around 5600 B.C.
• Predominantly played by ….women(!) in the ancient world (I Samuel 10:5).
• This is the drum, without metal jingles, which is referred to in the bible as the “tambourine” or “timbrel” and was used in worship (Psalm 68:24-25).
Drumming in the bible
• “Tambourine” is not a direct translation!
• The original word is the 'tof' (Hebrew).• 'tambour” + “ine”• The 'tof' appears in Scripture 16 times.
- Terl Bryant - from 'A Heart to Drum'
"Praise Him with melodic cymbals, praise Him with clanging cymbals (i.e., cymbals of teruah)." - Psalm 150:5
Drumming in the bible• Following God’s liberation of Israel from Egypt and the
crossing of the Red Sea, Miriam and the women celebrated with the frame drum and dancing (Exodus 15).
• Psalm 150 encourages worshippers to praise God on the frame drum (Psalm 150:4).
• Following Jewish tradition, the early church would have worshiped and celebrated playing the frame drum.
• It wasn’t until the drum became associated with pagan Graeco-Roman gods and goddesses that the drum was forbidden and fell out of use within Christian worship.
• Today, the drum is being reintroduced into Christian worship. • Drummers from all over the world are being called back into
ministry. • The drum has been an essential element of the spirituality of
the majority of the earth’s peoples since the dawn of civilization.
• God's word gives authority for the drummer to strike the drum: in celebration (1 Chron. 13:8); in praise (Ps. 150:4); in worship (Ps. 68:25); for prophecy (1 Sam. 10:5, 6); for healing (Ps. 81:2-7); and in declaration of the Lord's sovereignty (Isaiah 30:32).
Psalm Drummers
• "For thousands of years the drum has offered a beat for the armies of earthly kingdoms. A Psalm Drummer's beat announces the forces of love coming through Christ the King."
- Terl Bryant - Psalm Drummers founder
