From our Principal: Ms Chris Ling
From our Principal: Ms Chris Ling You may recall that earlier in the year, we made some changes to the way we address behaviour in the school. I am pleased to note that we continue to have greatly improved behaviour in the school, as a result.
Our teachers have focussed on implementing consistent rules and feedback to children across the school. In setting rules, our three key messages
are: Ready, Respectful, and Safe, and we also try to tailor our feedback to match these ideas. We encourage students to take responsibility for developing their own behavioural skills by providing them with a framework to revise and improve their choices.
Together, we have taken extra interest in the individuality of each student, noticing the many wonderful personalities and characteristics they bring to school, and we use this information to help keep students engaged in their learning. A team of teachers meets every week to develop behavioural learning support strategies for individual children.
To support this work, we’ve also accessed a number of helpful programs, including the Girls and Boys Groups (for Years 5 and 6 students), and our Bridge Builders Program. These have been aimed at building up the relationship between those students, developing their capacity to relate to each other and to resolve everyday issues or conflicts. Our Bridge Builders program helps children to know how to talk with each other when they disagree over things.
Further, if needed, some children are able to access professional counselling either through the Guidance Officer or from independent providers who visit the school.
We Love to Learn Term 3, Week 8 – Tuesday 4 September 2018
Positive recognition for children is important too. This happens in the classrooms on a daily basis, as teachers notice and comment on the great learning that children are doing, as well as the ways they relate to one another. More formally, at our fortnightly Whole School Assembly, efforts are also recognised with Star Student Certificates and Star Student Badges.
Children are encouraged to notice how they feel when they make an effort they can be proud of, and we endeavour to ensure they have their achievements acknowledged accordingly.
It’s great to see how settled and focussed children are at this school, and to witness such a great improvement. I’d like to congratulate all our students, staff and parents for their efforts in making this happen.
If you are interested in learning more about our behaviour management strategies, please feel free to download our Responsible Behaviour Plan (PDF, 1.73MB) from the school website. We also have a few books that explain the thinking behind our policy development, available in the school office. Parents are welcome to borrow these resources.
School news Star Students
Congratulations to each of the students who received Star Student Certificates at our Whole School Assembly yesterday. They were:
Year 1: Miles, Indy, Sara, Dominic, Archer, Maryam, Alice, Isaac S, Corey.
Year 2: Megan, Jay, Isla, Chloe, Samantha, Karel. Year 3: Luke, Nate, Georgie, Chelsea, Henry, Angad,
Fynn and Lucy – plus Star Student Badges for Indyana, Georgie and Gemma.
Year 5: Nobele, Brian. Congratulations also to Sarafeena (Year 4) for qualifying for Lytton Districts in Discus, and to Leroy (Year 5) for placing 4th at Karate Nations.
Love Your Hat! Please! We often have children and parents who are concerned about lost and missing school hats. Having to frequently replace this important part of the school uniform is understandably annoying for parents. It is also quite worrying for all concerned, especially coming into what is expected to be another record-breaking summer. All children need good sun protection, so now is a good time for us to re-focus on how we can do better in this area. From this week the school will rigorously implement its long-standing policy of ‘No Hat -No Play’. Children without hats will sit out in a shady area. Similarly, students must wear hats for PE classes – teachers will check hats before each PE lesson and anyone who doesn’t have a hat will need to sit in the office for the duration. To help us ensure all children can keep track of their hats, the following approaches will start this week:-
1. Teachers will check hats to see they are labelled with the child’s name, and that each child has the correct hat. So now is a good time to check that your labels haven’t faded or peeled, and that aren’t any stray hats in your child’s wardrobe. 2. We are asking parents to please ensure that children wear their hats to and from school. This is a high exposure time to the sun and children need this protection anyway, but this measure has the added benefit of ensuring students are more mindful of bringing, keeping track of, and leaving with, their hat. 3. Teachers will supervise hats-on as the children leave at the end of the day. 4. During the day hats will be stored in school bags or tidy boxes in the classroom.
It should be unnecessary for parents to continually have to replace hats and these procedures are aimed at making sure that all children have a hat - their own hat - every day.
Book Week Parade
Congratulations to all the students and staff who took part in this year’s Book Week Parade last Tuesday morning – you looked spectacular!
In keeping with the theme of ‘Find Your Treasure’, we saw plenty of pirates, but thankfully not much skulduggery.
It was great to see so much effort and imagination from our students, as well as some great leads on enjoyable books to read. Nice work, everyone!
A special thank you goes to Jeanette McKilligan for co-ordinating this year’s event.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to all the students who completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Certificates will be presented during celebration week in November.
Planetarium Excursion
Students in Year 3 and some Year 4s will be visiting the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium at Mt Coot-tha, on Tuesday 18 September.
Permission Forms and Medical Forms have already been sent home, as well as Konnective messages about the practical arrangements and fee (which is $17 per student, including the chartered bus travel).
Please return both forms as soon as possible - if you need a replacement, please contact the relevant class teacher or the office.
If any class parents are available to assist with supervision on the day (and have their own transport – the bus is full), please let Jodi Stephenson know.
Student-Teacher-Parent interviews
Hopefully you’ve already seen our Konnective regarding this semester’s three-way interviews, which will be occurring between Monday 3 September and Friday 21 September.
These meetings are a great opportunity to familiarise yourself with the work your child has been doing this term, to discuss learning goals, and to update strategies to support their progress.
Students appreciate parents taking the time to engage with them in the classroom environment, and our teachers value your input. Thank you to everyone who has already registered for their interview.
We are using a new system to administer these interviews – if you didn’t receive the flyer, please see the procedure set out below.
We’ll keep this booking system open until Wednesday 12 September. Please contact the office if you experience any difficulties in using it.
If you don’t have internet access, you can still contact your child’s teacher directly, and they can arrange to make the booking for you.
Meetings are strictly 15 minutes - if you require more time with a particular teacher, please arrange a separate meeting by contacting your child’s teacher.

NAPLAN review
We’ve been asked to let you know about the Queensland Government’s NAPLAN review, which is now in its second stage. We expect to receive an email from the Department of Education shortly, with a link that will allow our students to participate in a survey, which will allow them to have their say on NAPLAN. The survey will be for the students to complete at home, with the consent of a parent or carer who can assist as needed. The student survey will be open until 14 September. We’ll send you the link via a separate Konnective, once we receive it.
Undercover Area Works
Over the school holidays, the roof and insulation in the Undercover Area will be replaced. New lighting and fans will be installed and bulkheads will be built around the roller doors to prevent entry by possums.
When students return in Term 4 the Undercover Area will look brand new. We are excited to see the improvements and know that our whole school community will benefit.
Renee, our P&C Vice President has submitted a grant to fund the installation of possum boxes to provide our friendly neighbours with their own space to live.
Helping Hands Outdoor Area Works
We are working on improving the outdoor area of our outside school hours care building. You may have noticed it was painted recently. Ross and Mick have laid new grass and created a natural looking pathway.
Over the holidays (on a weekend) a landscaper will remove the retaining wall and install a new gate and pathway from Molloy road.
We are also working on creating a rock garden. No doubt the smaller rocks will be used by students to construct all manner of fun ideas.
Change to Credit Card Phone Payments
Please be aware that for the security of your credit card information, we can no longer accept credit card payments over the phone. BPOINT does have a phone payment line and you can pay via credit card over the phone through this service. Win, win! Dress Like a Farmer Day
Don’t forget, the last day of term is Dress Like a Farmer Day. We’ll collect gold coin donations towards drought relief. Thanks as always for your support.
P&C News
Fathers’ Day Stall
We hope all the Dads and Grandads in our school community enjoyed their loot from this year’s Fathers’ Day stall – once again another great fundraiser, and a chance for the students to
practice their decision-making and maths skills. Thank you to Tania Clough (mum of Holly and Emma), Thelma Sharp (grandmother of Gaby), Sheyna from Helping Hands, Leonie Ferguson (mother of Gaby) and the Year 6 helpers (Holly and Ellie from the Events Team, Gaby and Noara) who helped run this year’s Fathers’ Day stall! Our students enjoyed the opportunity to selecting gifts for their loved ones, and we raised more than $550 towards augmenting the classroom resources available to our students. A special thank you to Leonie Ferguson, who has
co-ordinated the Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day stalls ever since her older daughter (now year 7) was in Year 1. As her younger daughter will finish at CHSS this year, we want to make sure Leonie knows we appreciate the truly valuable contribution she has made to our school community. We extend her our heartfelt appreciation, and many high fives.
If you’re interested in taking the relay baton on this role for next year, please let the P&C know. Sporting Gear
Thank you to everyone who has been supporting our school with their purchases as Rebel Sport Cannon Hill. We’ve accrued over $800 to spend in store, and Whaea is busily compiling a new equipment wish-list as we speak. How exciting! We hope to start with purchasing a class set of badminton rackets and shuttles. It’s easy to contribute to this scheme – just let the staff Rebel Sport know when you’re making your purchase that you would like their community contribution to go towards Cannon Hill State School. Thanks also to everyone who helped with the Coles sports vouchers campaign earlier in the year. We hope to shortly provide you with an update regarding what equipment we’ve been able to acquire, thanks to your support.
Uniform Shop and Lost Property
Sandra will be opening the Uniform Shop on Wednesday 5 September, from 8.30am-9am. It is pretty full of stock at the moment, with plenty of second-hand jackets, long pants, hats and shirts in various sizes – all at bargain basement prices. Many students lose their hats during the course of a school term, and (as mentioned above) hats are compulsory for outside play and sport. Now is a good time to stock up – and also to check lost property, to see whether any of your children’s missing items have been found. We appreciate that most students’ uniform items have names on them at the start of the year, but sometimes the names become illegible over time and it becomes harder to return items. Anything left in lost property at the end of the year is donated to the Uniform Shop. Next P&C Meeting
Our next scheduled P&C Meeting will be in the school library, on Monday 15 October 2018, at 6.30pm.
However, as the September meeting had to be postponed, there may be another in the meantime – we will let you know details via Konnective if a new meeting date is confirmed.
Everyone is welcome to attend P&C meetings – we usually have a pretty good turnout and really constructive discussions, but it would be great to see a bit more diversity and to hear some fresh opinions. There’s no obligation to come to every single meeting.
P&C meetings are a great opportunity to contribute to your school community – you are able to have an input into how funds are raised, how money will be spent, and to set priorities for new resources to support our students.
It’s also a great opportunity to get to know other motivated, visionary and resourceful people in your community.
…And if that doesn’t nudge you over the line - sometimes, there are even beverages. It really isn’t a bad way to spend a Monday evening.
For more information about the P&C and what we do, please check out our page on the school website.
If you have any questions about P&C activities, or have an idea of how you can help improve our school, please email us at [email protected].
