PASTORAL REFLECTIONS

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On Monday we celebrate the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, which is why we are blessing pets in the park this afternoon. Saint Francis is the patron saint of the environment, as reflected by the title chosen by Pope Francis for his great Encyclical letter on the environment. Here is an excerpt from Saint Francis’ beautiful canticle of the sun, which I recommend to your prayer at this beautiful time of year:

We praise you, Lord, for all your creatures, especially for Brother Sun, who is the day through whom you give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor, of you Most High, he bears your likeness. We praise you, Lord, for Sister Moon and the stars in the heavens You have made them bright, precious and fair. We praise you, Lord, for Brothers Wind and Air, fair and stormy, all weather's moods, by which you cherish all that you have made.

We praise you, Lord, for Sister Water, so useful, humble, precious and pure. We praise you, Lord, for Brother Fire, through whom you light the night. He is beautiful, playful, robust, and strong. We praise you, Lord, for Sister Earth, who sustains us with her fruits, colored flowers, and herbs. We praise and bless you, Lord, and give you thanks, and serve you in all humility. We praise you, Lord.

In his Encyclical letter, written to defend the beauty of all God’s creation, the Holy Father writes:

Saint Francis, faithful to Scripture, invites us to see nature as a magnificent book in which God speaks to us and grants us a glimpse of his infinite beauty and goodness…For this reason, Francis asked that part of the friary garden always be left untouched, so that wild flowers and herbs could grow there, and those who saw them could raise their minds to God, the Creator of such beauty. Rather than a problem to be solved, the world is a joyful mystery to be contemplated with gladness and praise.

So, stop for a moment on one of these glorious fall days, and thank God for the exquisite beauty which surrounds us, and the saint and the pope who encourage us to take good care of it.

In the Lord, Monsignor Moroney

Grow in Faith with Deacon Bob “Relics”

While Relics are one of the most fascinating traditions of the Catholic Church, they can also be one of the most misunderstood. First of all, we should discuss “What is a relic?” Relics are physical objects that have a direct association with the Saints or with Our Lord.

The word Relic comes from the Latin relinquo, literally meaning “I leave,” or “I abandon.” Relics are broken down into three kinds or “classes” of relics: First Class are the actual body or part of the body of a saint; Second Class are the articles, such as clothing or books, used by the saint; and Third Class are articles that have touched a relic of the body or of another relic.

Relics are often associated with miracles or special graces and blessings. We must always use caution though, because these – like the sacramentals we spoke of previously – are not meant for superstition or as “good luck charms.”

Relics do have a basis in Sacred Scripture. We can see in II Kings 2:9-14, the Prophet Elisha picked up the mantle of Elijah, after he had been taken up to heaven, and with it, Elisha struck the water of the Jordan, which then parted so that he could cross. In another passage (II Kings 13:20-21), some people quickly buried a dead man in the grave of Elisha, “but when the man came into contact with the bones of Elisha, he came back to life and rose to his feet.” In Acts of the Apostles we read, “Meanwhile, God worked extraordinary miracles at the hands of Paul. When handkerchiefs or cloths which had touched his skin were applied to the sick, their diseases were cured and evil spirits departed from them” (Acts 19:11-12). And of course we remember the woman who was healed of her hemorrhage simply by touching the hem of Jesus' cloak (Matthew 9:20-22).

So while miracles were connected with these “relics”– it is not that some magical power existed in them. No. It is instead that as God’s work was done through the lives of His holy ones, so His work can also continue through them – or their belongings – even after their deaths. As a result, our Church gives great respect to relics, and they are highly sought after. We should always keep the use of relics in perspective, though. St. Jerome (d. 420) wrote in defense of relics: “We do not worship, we do not adore, for fear that we should bow down to the creature rather than to the Creator, but we venerate the relics of the martyrs in order to better adore Him whose martyrs they are.”

Relics, for proper veneration, are traditionally placed in a “reliquary” – a box, locket, or a glass case. Did you know that one of the largest collections of relics in our country is right next door at the St. Benedict Abbey in Still River? I have been blessed to see it, many times!

Relics and their veneration are, on the surface, an unusual aspect of our faith – but once you know more, you can see that they – like all we hold dear – are just another way that leads us to a deeper faith, and connection, both to the Saints and to Our Lord.

God Bless you all!

Collection Report: Last Week’s Stewardship $5,826.02 Thank you!

WOMEN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT

A Bible Study Course with Pat Secino

We often hear about the men in the Old Testament, but have you wondered about the women? These women of the Old Testament tend to be invisible, but they too, have stories of their own. Let us explore the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and find out what they are all about. Please join Pat Secino for a bible study to be held on Thursday morning beginning October 7th after the 9AM Mass. This study will be held in the Parish Center for 9 weeks. Please e-mail Pat at [email protected]. If you are unable to e-mail, please call the Rectory at 978-537-6541.
