Commodore’s Comments Happy New Year to all. I hope everyone’s holiday was enjoyable and special. I also hope our members and guests had an opportunity to experience the awe-inspiring holiday decorations adorning the Club this year. Thank you, Kim, Tammy, Cora, Pat, Karla, Julie, Marlene, Susan, Bobbie and others
who gave of your time and talents to make the Venice Yacht Club an amazing and special holiday treat for our eyes. The arrival of the new year ushers in my departure as Commodore. It has been my honor, and yes, my pleasure toserveourClubasaboardmemberandflagofficerforthe past six years. I have had the opportunity to serve alongside so many wonderful people who provided me tremendous guidance, support and comradery. Many thanks to my fellow board members and committee chairs for providing the teamwork necessary to steer this organization. Thank you to our membership for all your kind words throughout the past year and for granting me your trust. Thank you to our fabulous staff for your hard work and vibrant character that truly makes VYC a special place. Most of all, thank you, Tammy, for being my wife and partner during this episode in our life. Without your knowledge, guidance, support and love, I’d be lost. Our efforts together have made an indelible mark upon the Venice Yacht Club. We definitely changedsome things and added some new stuff over the course of the year. For me, the most tangible of all things we accomplished, is that we did them together as a cohesive team.InmyfirstarticlefortheCurrents, I simply stated: “This year we will focus on working together to provide membership with a variety of opportunities to enjoy.” Tammy and I, and the many volunteers, sincerely hope we helped provide that opportunity for you to enjoy the Club this past year. As I reminisce over the past year’s accomplishments, I’m most impressed by our Club’s resilience. Nelson Mandela wrote: “Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.” Last year presented several struggles for us to overcome; here are a few: 1) failure of the sea wall causing reconstruction of the fuel dock for a couple of months last spring; 2) city water main break causing the Club to shut down for a couple of days; 3) working through a major clubhouse remodel; 4) swimming pool structural break shutting the pool down for several
weeks; 5) who could forget Hurricane Irma and the chaos, damage and closures that brought?; and 6) the loss of electricity to the clubhouse on the big day to start decorating the Club for the holidays. Probably fair to state we had a few obstacles. However, during this period, approximately 20 prior members reinstated their memberships. Additionally, at the time of this writing, we have 60 new members compared with 29 new members from the prior year. This is a major achievement many yacht clubs would be envious to attain during their best of times. Thank you, Membership Chairman P/C Bill Dowling, and your devoted committee for the outstanding service to ourClub during some difficultconditions. December was very festive and January will not disappoint those looking for more activities at VYC. If you are reading this in late December there is probably still a chance to make a reservation for our New Year’s Eve Celebration. Please plan to join us January 8 for our Annual Meeting. The Board of Directors and Committees will present reports to membership including our fiscal year audit and highlights from2017.Newboardmembers andflagofficerswill alsobe announced and sworn in. A VYC tradition is for the new Commodore to adjourn the annual meeting, then proceed to the bar and buy a round of drinks for all the attendees. I am hoping for a huge turnout at our annual meeting so we can welcome our new Commodore in a big way! The Commodore's Ball on the 20th is one of the Club's premier formal events and is not to be missed. This will be my last Currents article as Commodore. I have enjoyed reporting about our Club and its people this past year. I look forward to supporting our new Commodore, Board of Directors and Committees this year.Myfinalobservation from thebridge is that thefuture for VYC looks good and its new leaders sound and capable. May you have warm words on a cool evening, a full moon on a dark night, and a smooth sail all the way to your port.Kerry Carper, Commodore

Manager’s Column The holiday season is behind us. The decorations have been taken down and placed in storage until next year. We would like to thank everyone who supported the Club during the busy season and hope that you enjoyed the time you shared with us.
Sure, there was a lot going on in December, but January looks just as
busy. Details on all the upcoming events are in this issue of the Currents. Make your plans early to attend one or all of these great events. A quick word about reservations--please make them! With the advent of what promises to be another very busy season, we will do our best to provide you with the best food, beverages and services whenever you dine at the Club. The best way for us to do that is if we know you are coming. If we have a reservation, your table will be waiting for you when you arrive, there will be staff to serve you, and the kitchen will be prepared. As a reminder, we will accept Tiki reservations for tables of eight or more and only on the lower level. Please take the time to give us a call and help us to better serve you. Let me take this opportunity to pass along to you the sincere gratitude of the staff for your generous contributions to the employee holiday fund. It helped brighten their holiday season and is greatly appreciated. Finally, from the entire staff, we would like to wish everyone a happy, safe and prosperous new year.Fair winds and following seas.Jerry Clemens, Club Manager

Message from the Fleet Captain SailA look back on sailing at the Venice Yacht Clubby P/C Merle Graser Pat and I joined the Venice Yacht Club in 1963. There were three boats at the docks, all sailboats. Misty, a 26 foot sloop, was owned by Capt. Jenny Schroeder, who was the director of the pram squadron located here at the Club.
Rosemary and Walter Farley had a 30 foot sailboat named Circi. Walter Farley was an accomplished author who wrote the Black Stallion series of books. We had a 19 foot Lightning class sloop that we kept on the south side of the Club, near the bar. Guido Frizini, affectionately known as Uncle Guido, was the bartender. When he would see the Lightning approaching the Club, he would always come to the dock and greet us with our favorite cocktail. At that time, most of the sailing that occurred at the Club was concentratedaroundthepramsquadron,afleetofapproximately12 plywood prams designed by Clark Mills of Clearwater. In order to fund the prams, we invited local businesses to sponsor the boats with the sponsor's name on the side of the boat. Sponsors included Publix, First National Bank of Venice, Blalock Insurance Company as well as many others. Pat was the chief instructor for the pram squadron from 1965 to 1969. The boats were built for the sum of $200 apiece. Today those boats sell for many thousands of dollars. In the late 60s there was a yearly race from Sarasota to Venice called the IBOR, the Itty Bitty Ocean Race. The race would includekeeledboatsaswellasdinghies.Therewasalocalfleetof about 10 sailboats called V-2’s. They were built in Venice at the airport by George Kaufman, boat builder. The IBOR was a very popular race with the participants mostly from Sarasota. Venice Yacht Club was just beginning to participate in sailboat racing and the IBOR introduced many boaters to sailing. In the early 1970’s the SORC (Southern Ocean Racing Conference)petitioned to race toVeniceYachtClub.Thefirstrace to the Club was quite eventful. It was heavy weather as the boatsreachedthefinishlineoffofthejetties.Oneoftheboatscircled too close to the beach and ran aground. It was about a 45 to 50 foot sloop. They were able to put an anchor off the bow but couldn't get headway because every time a wave would pass, it would raise the keel off of the sandbar and immediately as the waves passed put the boat back on the sandbar. One of our members, Norvin Green, was asked to go out and tow the boat off of the sandbar. As the rescue boat attempted to pull the sailboat off, it became apparent that the transom of the boat might become dislodged due to the pressure of pulling the sailboat. The captain of the rescue boat radioed the captain of the sailboat and said, "I think I might pull my stern off if I keep trying to tow you off of the sandbar." The captain of the sailboat radioed back, "I don't give a damn, I’ll buy you a new boat." The sloop was successfully rescued without the loss of a
transom. The following year the SORC was composed of a great number of professional boats and crews. The joy of racing and camaraderie of the sailors was lost in the professionality of the paidsailors.TheboatownerswereinfluentialmensuchasJackEckhard of Eckerd drugs and the chairman of Texas Instruments. The following year the Yacht Club declined to have the SORC come to Venice. We have had many memorable sailors at the Club. Among them were Walter Farley, Dan Rowan of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in and Edwin Wes who wrote episodes for I Dream of Jeannie. Non-members of the Club who have visited are Ted Irwin of Irwin Yachts on Distant Drummer, Charlie Morgan of Morgan Yachts and Walter Cronkite on Wyntje. Venice Yacht Club has a rich and memorable sailing history that will live on and grow in the years to come.Bill Gately, Fleet Captain - Sail

Cruise to Isles Yacht Club Message from the Fleet Captain Power A happy new year to fellow cruisers and welcome to another great year on the water. Our November cruise was lead by Bob and Christy Wiggs to Aquamarina Palm Harbour to round out our 2017 cruising season. Five vessels
made the trip for a very relaxing weekend at one of my favorite destinations. Kim and I joined in by staying at one of the marina condos, and an additional five folks drove down fordinner Saturday night. Smooth sailing, great weather and good company made for a very pleasant event. The first weekend in December ushered in two of myfavorite events at the Club with the Lighting of the Fleet and, of course, the Christmas Boat Parade. This year the “Two Jacks and their Mates” did the judging of the boats with the following winners: Most Traditional Knots of Fun – Roy Lee; Most Creative Fruition – Bill Gately; Best Overall Pure Cin – Cindy Watson. Thanks again to all who lit up the docks with their decorated vessels, and a special thanks to the Murphys and Schemms for their help with the event. This month also ushers in a change of the guard for the Club’s Fleet Captain of Power. Kim and I enjoyed serving in this position over the past two years and want to thank all those that pitched in to give us a hand, especially those that volunteered to lead a cruise. Things may not have always gone as planned, but the one thing that remained consistent was the good fellowship within the group and the good times we shared together. Lloyd Abbot, along with his wife, Cindy, will take over for the coming year with the assistance of Steve and Barb Johnson. Lloyd and Cindy are long time cruisers, both power and sail, and keep their new Tiara over on E dock. Lloyd and Steve have put together a great schedule for the coming year and I encourage all the Club’s boaters to join in and lend a hand to continue this great tradition. Chef ’s Corner If you thought that what you
eat on New Year’s Day was simply a matter of “that’s what I’ve always done,” you might be right. But, your tradition might be based on centuries of belief. Many cultures prepare New Year’s foods that are believed to influencegoodfortune, oravoiddishesthat might cause misfortune.
Many cultures serve similar vegetables and meats in their New
Year’s Day celebrations to bring good fortune. During the time of the Pharaoh, black-eyed peas were a symbol of luck and good fortune. The belief was that those who ate black-eyes, an inexpensive and modest food, showed their humility and saved themselves from the wrath of the heavens because of the vanity they might have. In fact, black-eyed peas aren’t a pea at all – they’re lentils. For example, in Brazil and Italy, lentils (representing wealth) are served – in Brazil, with rice, which expands when cooked, showing increase and, in Italy, with pork sausage, to bring abundance. Pork and sauerkraut (cabbage) are combined in Germany, Poland and Scandinavia. Cabbage represents the green leaves of money. Similarly, throughout the southern U.S., black-eyed peas in some variation, with or without ham hocks, and greens have inspired such dishes as Hoppin’ John, that combines peas, rice and ham. As the story goes, black-eyed peas were used exclusively for cattle feed in the old South. During the battle of Vicksburg during the Civil War, the town was under siege for over 40 days. No supplies came in or out. Vicksburg was on the edge of starvation. The people had no choice but to eat those black-eyed peas, therefore starting a southern tradition. Today, black-eyes are eaten every New Year’s Day to bring good luck for the new year. There are, however, beliefs that exclude some foods as bad luck. These include lobsters because they move backwards and chickens because they scratch in reverse. Eating these on New Year’s Day might cause a reversal of fortune. Celebrating New Year’s Day with family, friends and food is a time-honored tradition that has included symbols of prosperity and good fortune. Enjoy “what you’ve always done” and, perhaps, add a new tradition in your New Year.So it Begins, 2018Chef Josh
Why is it called "Pearson's Cove" by P/C Shaun GraserCommodore Carper asked me to comment on the origin of "Pearson’s Cove." The following is a brief history of the room and how it got its name. On May 25, 1967,
Commodore Joe Ryan sent a letter to the membership announcing that member William T (Bill) Pearson had donated $25,000 for an addition to the south side of the existing yacht club. Mr. Pearson had previously donated an unnamed amount of money to re-carpet the clubhouse. As the new addition progressed, it became evident that there would be a shortfall of $7,000 in construction costs. On September 27, 1967, Commodore Ryan sent out another letter recognizing that Mr. Pearson would donate the additional funds necessary for a total of $32,000. This equates to somewhere near $250,000 in today's money. However, Mr. Pearson did have a simple request accompanying his donation. It appears that Mr. Pearson wanted a place to enjoy his cigars and read his paper. To accommodate Mr. Pearson, the new addition would be only available to "men" until 2:00 p.m. during the weekdays. This area would then be open to all members after 2:00 p.m. The new area soon became known as "Pearson’s Cove" and Bill Pearson was named an honorary director due to his generosity and support of the Venice Yacht Club. The evolution of our Club has been shaped by the rich history of our predecessors, deserving of acknowledgment and preservation.

From the Fleet SurgeonBack to Basics Unfortunately none of us escape back pain during our lifetime. When we are young, sore back muscles after a long day of yard work for example are to be expected. However, for some of us, as we age, back pain becomes our number one nemesis. It would be nice if we could just have a back replacement when it gets bad enough, like our hip or
knee, but unfortunately we are stuck with the back we were born with. So, taking care of it and keeping it in shape is even more important. Your back is basically a stack of bone building blocks alternating with soft disc cushions that allow flexibility and protection for your spinal cord. Like everything else, as we age, changes occur to our back. The discs shrink and lose their cushion and flexibility. This is primarily why we lose height after age 50. The medical term for this is degenerative disc disease which the majority of us develop as we age. This makes us less flexible and for some it causes pain both from the degenerative disc as well as arthritis in the little joints between each segment. Although so far I have not had knee or hip trouble, I have had two back surgeries and anything we can do to avoid them is important. The most pertinent thing people can do to protect their backs is to keep their core muscles in shape including their abdomen, hip and back muscles. There are multiple ways to do this and a good old Google search will help. McKinsey low back exercises are excellent. Stretching, Yoga, Pilates, and swimming are all great exercises with a good core focus. Manipulation and massage can be very helpful in relieving symptoms but should not substitute for core strengthening. Appropriate lifting mechanics are good to review. If symptoms persist or when additional symptoms occur like buttock pain, leg pain, leg numbness or changes in bowel or bladder control, medical evaluation by a physician should occur, and additional tests should be considered.Stay strong and get BACK to basics. Dr. Kevin

A New Year: A Great Time to Invest in our Community Our committee is at work, focusing on the needs of the South County region—work that truly is an investment in young families, children at risk, and returning veterans. All of us are investors for the future. We invest in our families, our financial well-being, and the community that sustains us. As the VYC Charitable Foundation, we have built an investment road-map over the last few years for which we are recognized. Two years ago, we laid out a footprint in South County with key contributions to Education and Nutrition. In 2017 we maintained that commitment and added attention to homelessness among young families and children. We will not waver from that path. We are also reminded that the privileges that enable us to give of ourselves were hard won and defended by our men and women in uniform, many of whom pay a price to protect our way of life. We are re-enforcing our traditional support of returning veterans and the active military. In 2018 we are announcing our new Signature Project, “N-VEST – Nutrition, Veterans, Education, and ShelTer…Investing in our Community.” The programs we support are capable, and our grants deliver new opportunities to those they serve. We are “N-VEST-ers” in their lives and our future together. We are known as partners in the battle for a better tomorrow; this is our legacy. We are so grateful for your support; none of our achievements in giving are possible without our members and the tireless efforts of our VYCCF committee. In 2018, let’s N-VEST together!Don Healy, VYCCF Chair

Florida Council of Yacht Clubs
ThisHappyNewYear2018findsmoreexcitementandwins on several levels for our VYBA sailors. The Fall Season has been a busy one with Club sailors participating in three regattas and our Venice High School Team competing in two. First, congratulations to James McGirr and Aaron Williams for earning a third place at the two-day Thanksgiving Regatta at the Davis Island Yacht Club. Competition was stiff, but our young men came through for the C420 Fleet. Kudos to Ozzie Fischer, an Opti Green Fleet sailor, at another Fall Seasonregattaforafirstplaceinarace.
Thank you, Venice Sailing Squadron C o m m o d o r e Jonathan Phillips and VSS sailor John Lynch, for inviting our young sailors to participate in Venice’s Christmas Boat Parade of
Lights. It was a beautiful evening with an almost full moon, and this event is one the community enjoys and happily anticipates. It was special for these VYBA members experiencing this activity. The Sunday Adventure Sailors, who meet for non-competitive events, are trying out some new Australian boats on loan from Topper. VYBA thanks Dick Hitchcock for presenting this opportunity for our sailors of every age. Last month, I mentioned two St. Croix residents, displaced due to Irma, had moved here and joined the VYBA. Well, oneofthem,EthanHanley,isaLevel2CertifiedCoachandis now working with the Red, White, and Blue Opti Fleets. We welcome him! More about the Club’s Spring Season next month.Wishing you smooth sailing into 2018!Noni Lavelle
