NATIONAL Night OUT

The Annual National Night Outevent involves more than 89,000

communities from all 50 states, U.S.territories, Canadian cities and mili-tary bases around the world. In all,close to 31 million people participatein "America's night out against crime."

Barrington Place will be observingNational Night Out on Tuesday, Oc-tober 1, from 7 to 9 PM. We inviteall Barrington Place residents to joinus at the Clubhouse at this time. At 7PM we will be showing “Aladdin” asthe featured movie. Ice Cream Party.com will be serving two-scoop sun-daes with popular flavors of ice creamand toppings. There will be glowsticks and candy for the kids. Also,pizza, popcorn, nachos and drinks willbe served.

National Night Out is a cohesive effort

to promote involvement in crime pre-vention activities, police-communitypartnerships, neighborhood camarade-rie and send a message to criminalsletting them know that neighborhoodsare organized and fighting back.

Sugar Land City Council unani-mously voted to call and sched-

ule a $90 million general obligationbond election for November 5 to ad-dress drainage, public safety facili-ties, streets, and an animal shelter.

Although there is approximately $45million in debt capacity over the fis-cal year 2021-2023 timeframe, thatis not sufficient to support the total$90 million worth of projects identi-fied in the proposed GO Bond.

29% Public Safety/Public Facilities

11% Streets

7% Animal Shelter

The projects have been identified byresidents through various avenuesincluding the citizen satisfaction sur-

vey, public meetings after weatherevents and studies and master plans.The projects are distributed acrossthe City.

Should residents approve fundingfor the projects they’ve identified asimportant, the tax rate impact willrepresent $10 per month for the av-erage Sugar Land homeowner. Withvoter approval, the projects will befunded in future capital programs tobegin in fiscal years 2021 to 2023.

The City of Sugar Land’s waterwas selected as the Best Tasting

Water in the United States and thesecond-best tasting water in NorthAmerica on June 11, 2019, at theAmerican Water Works Associa-tion’s (AWWA) Annual Conferenceand Exposition (ACE19).

The City missed winning the besttasting water in North America bythe narrowest of margins as it tookthree rounds of judging to break atie between the top two positions. Inthe end, the Canadian town of BlueMountain Ontario won best tastingin North America.

Master Plan Citizen Task Force.

The citizen-led task force of at least18 members is intended to build onyears of mobility planning and in-vestments. Members will be selectedto ensure diverse mobility interests

The Board is working with Barring-ton Place Elementary, FBISD andthe City of Sugar Land Police De-partment to address the many issuesour residents are facing due to theincrease in school traffic.

Concerns that are being addressedinclude; inconvenience to the resi-dents along these streets accessingtheir homes, inconsiderate parentsparking in and/or blocking drive-ways, parents and students litteringon residents property, and most seri-ous concern is the uncontrolled pe-destrian traffic in and around theschool.

We will continue to work to im-prove these conditions and to informthe community of the actions takento remedy these concerns.

As traffic increases, it increases thepotential for accidents, road rageand other incidents. We ask foryour patience and to increase yourawareness when picking up or drop-ping off your child. Safety first!

Dishonest companies set up web-sites that look like legitimate placesto get information on finding a job,joining the military, or getting gov-ernment benefits. But they might nothelp you with any of those things.Instead, they’ll take your personalinformation and sell it to other com-panies. The companies that buythose “leads” then try to pitch youproducts or services you didn’t askfor.

The FTC has reached a settlementwith Career Education Corporation(CEC). According to the FTC, CECbought leads from companies thatset up sites to attract people lookingfor things like jobs, how to join themilitary, and Medicaid information.All to collect people’s information.The people who responded to thosesites then got calls trying to get themto enroll in CEC’s post-secondaryschools.

If this sounds familiar, it might bebecause the FTC has sued several ofthe website operators before, includ-ing Sunkey, Edutrek and Gigats. Butthis time, the case isn’t about gener-ating the leads. Instead, it’s aboutthe company that should haveknown those leads weren’t legit –and used them anyway. And, says

the FTC, CEC also used telemar-keters to make aggressive enroll-ment pitches – often to people onthe Do Not Call Registry.

Here are some tips on getting to bet-ter – and real – online sources of in-formation for jobs, the military, andgovernment benefits:

If you find an unfamiliar websitethat claims to offer what you want,search its name with words like“review,” “scam,” or “complaint.”

The Department of Labor’s Ameri-can Job Centers has informationabout jobs in your state.

For information on joining the U.S.Armed Forces, start with this sitefrom the Department of Defense.Visit Medicaid.gov for details onthis benefit.

While there are many reliable, non-government sources for online infor-mation on government benefits,government sites (with URLs endingin “.gov”) are the safest bet.

To learn more about how your infor-mation can get shared online, readhow companies get your info. And ifyou’ve had an experience similar tothis case, report it to the FTC.

of illiteracy and how teaching read-ing, writing, and speaking skillscould change people's lives byopening to them, a world of oppor-tunity.
