AquaCare® GmbH & Co.KG is situated in Gladbeck, a small city in the heart of the Ruhrgebiet. The company was established in the year 1995 by the biologists Beate R. Sellner and Burkhard Ramsch. The company is involved in innovative and trend-setting technologies in the field of water purification. The planned and build plants are distributed for drinking water production, brackish and sea water desalination, aqua culture systems, aquaristics (hobby and show size aquaria) and for laboratories.

In den scope of drinking water production AquaCare® builds reverse osmosis units (R.O.) that produces pure water starting with 30 litres per day. These small units are used for domestic purposes and for hobby aquaria. AquaCare® offers their customers the full service program with competent consultation, estimation of the feed water, installing and maintaining the units.

drinking water unit „5RO“

Systems with pressure pumps are build by AquaCare® from hundred litres to hundreds of cubic meters per hour. Desalination of brackish and sea water starts with 7 to 1.500 tons per day. Of course the complete after sales service is available. Especially in the area of the Arabian states the maintaining is made by the subsidiary company “AquaCare – Egypt”.

hour. The integrated components depend on the feed water quality and the demanded pure water standards. Used techniques are reverse osmosis (R.O.), nano filtration, micro filtrat-ion, adsorption, ion exchange resins, UV radiation, and disinfection with chlorine dioxide.

The activities of AquaCare® in the field of aqua culture and aquaristics implies consulting, planning and constructing of biological and physical water treatment plants for breeding and keeping of aquatic organisms in fresh and sea water. The used components for big units are build on the customers demands – for small units different sizes of standard units are available. AquaCare® owns a license for the sea water flotation system AquaFlotor® patented by Research Centre Jülich. These units stand the test against many other systems and are characterized by an excellent gas enrichment and a fantastic flotation efficiency. skimmer ACF70,000V

de-nitrification system RBR900

The Roto-Bio-Reaktor is patented by the Research Centre Jülich, too. This method prevents the channel forming of the filter bed that occurs very often in other systems. The nitrate is continuously reduced to gaseous nitrogen at stable transforming rates. – Autotrophic systems based on sulphur are available, too. Especially for small systems the ADN filters are world wide approved. Therefore AquaCare® produces own injection moulding parts.

For effective enrichment of calcium and alkalinity (buffer capacity) in sea water tanks AquaCare® has developed and patented the Turbo-Chalk-Reactor. These units are available up to 3.6 kg Calcium per day.

Turbo Chalk Reactor size 6

Control systems for above units and plants are made by a Siemens S7 PLC. Depending on the demands of the customer these systems can realize a complete monitoring with web-cam and remote control via internet.

hobby coral reef tank with 4 m3 volume

Sea water show aquaria can be manufactures in nearly all dimensions, weather small hobby tanks for private persons or big show aquaria for exhibitions. The installed technique is developed for keeping fish, soft and hard corals or special organisms with special needs. Even feeding with living plankton is possible.

Supervision of the installed units or scientific inquests of biological or physical systems is another field of AquaCare® activity. On behalf of the client most of the examinations handle with the biological start up of a system or with the long term stability of them. Experiments to optimise resources or to examine what process is the best to solve the customer’s problems are other assignments of AquaCare®.

if small or large R.O. units the principle is the same

The principle of reverse osmosis technique The reverse osmosis (R.O.) technique is an extreme fine filtration and is therefore called hyper-filtration, too. The well known filtration techniques do not need water pressure in contrast to R.O. technique. The R.O. membrane has a very fine structure with semi-permeable properties. This special characteristic allows to invert the natural phenomenon osmosis.

Osmosis is an autonomous material migration through semi-permeable membranes. If two aqueous solutions with different ion or substance concentrations are separated with a membrane both solutions try to equalize the different concentrations. The ions or substances are not able to pass the membrane, so the water must flow from the low concentrated side to high concentrated side. This phenomenon runs so long if the concentrations on both sides are equal or the pressure on the low concentrated side is as high as the osmotic pressure of the high concentrated side.

In nature this principle is very important for all plants and animals. The cell pressure (turgor, osmotic pressure) is regulated by transporting only ions or molecules – the water will flow by itself.

The reverse osmosis technique inverted this process. On the side with the high concentration (concentrate side) a high pressure is established. The only way to get the system in equilibrium is that the water passes the membrane to the low concentrated side (permeate side or pure water side). The ions and molecules are not able to pass the membrane in considerable extent. To prevent that the concentration on the concentrate side is rising and rising a part of the concentrate must be drained – this brine passes the concentrate valve.

The rejection of the different ions and molecules is varying depending on the size (molecular weight), the charge (uncharged, dipoles, mono-valent or multi-valent ions) and the structure of the substance. The used pressure in the system depends on the feed (fresh water, brackish or sea water), the used membranes and the recovery of the system. For example: a fresh water systems works with 4 to 16 bar, a sea water system needs minimum 40 bar to negotiate the osmotic pressure of the concentrate.

To guarantee a long life a reverse osmosis system some important terms must be redeemed:

- the water must be particle-free → a sediment filter with 5 µm must be installed

- the water must be free of oxidizing agents, e.g. chlorine → activated carbon

PE-ROFNC.DOC, Jun. 11

filtration is necessary - the dissolved salts should not precipitate while concentration at the membrane → the right recovery

must be calculated exactly and anti-scaling substances must be dosed or the water must be softened with a ion exchange unit

- all materials must be suitable for the concentrate → plastics, stainless steel at low chloride concentrations (fresh water), duplex steel at high chloride concentrations (brackish and sea water)

- the main components and parameters must be controlled to ensure a proper running of the system.

Process with AquaCare units (type HP) If the unit is starting an automatic feed valve opens and the incoming water will be cleaned by a 5 µm sediment filter. A dosing station pumps antiscaling substances into the feed water tube. For best intermixing a static mixer is installed. Only if the antiscalants are mixed very well a proper running of the unit is guaranteed. Alternative softened water can be used with small units. After pre-pressure control the water flows into the main pump. AquaCare is working only with high pressure p = pressure gauges; RO = reverse osmosis module; V = flow meter; Dos = dosing pump circulation pumps made of stainless steel. Noise and vibrations are very low to ensure a long life time of the components. The high pressure tube made of austenitic stainless steel 1.4571 (316 Ti) guarantees a long life time without pitting corrosion. After passing the membranes the permeate flow is monitored; a counter pressure is inhibited by a check valve. The concentrate flow is adjusted by a gate valve or needle valve and monitored by a flow meter. Before and after operation the unit flushes the membrane with feed water. All components are controlled by a micro-processor unit or optional by a PLC. The conductivity is shown in the display. If the adjustable maximum limit is reached the unit shuts down automatically.

CIP-units (clean in place) During operation of a R.O. system the membranes will foul although antiscalants are dosed or softened water is fed. With the time inorganic substances and bio films will be taken up by the membranes. Therefore once to three times a year – depending on quality of antiscalants, maintenance of the unit, and of course of the feed water quality – the membranes must be cleaned with chemicals. After the cleaning process permeate flow and rejection of the membranes are quiet better than before cleaning. For cleaning the tubes of the R.O. system are dismantled and the flushing adapters of the CIP (Clean In Place) connected. The CIP consists of a tank, a chemical resistant pump, a sediment filter and a flow meter. The pump pushes the cleaning solution through the connected R.O. vessels. The detached dirt will be caught by the sediment filter. The inorganic crusts will be dissolved. After cleaning the R.O. membranes the chemical should be neutralized. After flushing the membranes with permeate and re-connecting to the R.O. main system the R.O. unit can be started again. CIP-units are only profitable with large R.O. systems.

The advantage of reverse osmosis - reverse osmosis is an efficient membrane filtration technique which reliably removes hardness

and detrimental substances such as nitrate, silicic acid, pesticides, chlorine, and traces of phar-maceuticals from drinking water and effectively retains bacteria, viruses, algae, and radioactive particles

- easy to operate: no addition of chemicals - lower running costs than other techniques

The advantage of an AquaCare reverse osmosis unit at a glance - the units are equipped with a course filter to eliminate sediments to protect the reverse osmosis

membrane; chlorine elimination in series up to HP 24.000; pressure gauges control the filter condition

- only the best quality polyamide / polysulfone membranes (TFC) are used: rejection 95-99% depending on recovery and type of unit

- built-in automatically flushing system and concentrate recycling in short membrane construc-tions considerably increases the life of the membrane and provides best water quality

- antiscaling technique (softener or dosing station) are possible - a pressure pump raises the working pressure to 16-80 bar and reduces the concentrate down to

30% (depending on incoming water quality and type of unit) - flow meters show the water flow of permeate and concentrate - automatically start and stop of the system possible - easy R.O. control with pre pressure control and connections to softening units and permeate

tanks to fill up the tank automatically; PLC on request - modifications for customer possible - professional advice on water treatment made in Germany - after sales service by a trained team in Germany and Egypt

R.O. module SW-PXM 240(modifications possible)

The advantages of AquaCare desalination units - In water-poor countries reverse osmosis technology is an effective method to de-

mineralize sea waters. With less than 4 kWh per cubic meter pure water this method is substantially more effective than e.g. the evaporation technology (75 kWh/m3).

- WHO water quality is produced - fully automatically controlled plant decrease maintenance costs and stops - all plants are calculated for membrane life span by at least 3 years - enlargement with modular systems possible - customer's requests can be considered - professional plants - made in Germany

Equipment characteristics of SW-PXM and SW-PXE-modules The modular constructed system with SW-PXM master module and the extension modules SW-PXE realizes at any time a flexible planning. Stages of development can be realized fast and without changing the existing plant. The stand-still time is very low. The PXM master module is equipped with a touch screen, that shows clearly all relevant parameters. All programs for operation and maintaining can be started with a view touches. All data are shown in two languages (e.g. English and Arabic) and are signed with color: red for failures, blue during normal operation, gray at standby. Optionally you can control the PLC with remote control over cell phone net or internet connection from any place of the earth. If additional extension modules (SW-PXE) are attached, these can be controlled over the master module. In addition, the extension modules can produce water by itself even if the master module should be out of operation. The redundant PXM-PXE system always realizes a basic supply. The PXM-PXE system of AquaCare is ideal for varying water needs, too.

PE-SWPX.DOC, Jun. 11

The space-saving arrangement of the components makes possible to build-in a plant with 480 t/d in a 20’-Container (option). With larger units the dosing tanks must be specially accommodated. The container building method permits mobile operation. Metering units for Antiscalant and acid are integrated in each module. Only with a good pretreatment and a perfect mixing by means of static mixer a long membrane life can be carried out. Failures with the dosing are recognized of the PLC and the plant is shut down, in order to avoid damage to the membranes. The pre filtration, which protects pumps and membranes against damages, is carried out with the best available technology: micro-filtration (units starting with 240 t/d). This continuously driven technique cleans the water 100times better than conventional sand filters and filter cartridges. Particles will not damage the high precision pumps. A periodical disinfection is made to ensure the maximum water flow. The plant is installed on a profile frame. The high pressure pipes are manufactured with duplex steel (1.4462), the low-pressure pipes are made with PVC. AquaCare use piston pumps with very low vibrations. This is realized with a high number of pistons (max. 9 pieces) that drop pulsations under 1,5%. Operating pressures up to 80 bar are possible. In order to suppress the damaging effects of the so-called water hammer, the main pumps are equipped with frequency controls, which makes a gentle starting and stopping possible, too. In addition the operating pressure (depending on temperature, salinity and age of the membranes) is controlled by the frequency of the pump, too. This saves energy and during the start the connected generator will not be overloaded. The high operating pressure realizes even at high salinities of e.g. 45,000 ppm TDS very good rejections and a smaller number of membranes. Especially if you must change the membranes a low number of them lowers the running costs. These advantages must be bought however with a increased current consumption. Therefore the most effective energy recovery technology is build-in. The direct exchange of the brine against fresh sea water is accomplished with an effectiveness by approx. 94%, which reduces cost of electricity extremely. The exchange module works nearly maintenance-free and consists of plastic and ceramic. AquaCare uses for seawater desalination TFC membranes with very high rejection (min. 99.6% under standard conditions) in order to produce best water quality during a long period. The membranes are mounted in high pressure housings (83 bar/1200 psi) made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). The side ports of the housings permits a simple change of the membranes. Regularly during operation or after stopping the system or after some failures all sea water wetted parts are flushed with disinfecting pure water (permeate). During operation the clean in place (CIP) system collects water in an extra tank (larger plant takes the water from the main tank). After stopping operation an auxiliary pump put disinfecting water through the system. This procedure prevents organic fouling processes at the membranes and reduces corrosion. Chlorine dioxide is added to the water, so that the plant can be switched off even for longer times. The pure water tank can be likewise used for a chemical cleaning of the membranes. An program leads the user step for step by this procedure. The heart of the system strikes by means of a PLC (Siemens) and controls all relevant parameters. All functions are realizes with a touch screen. So failures with switches or control lamps will not occur. All data are displayed with colour and are stored for quality assurance. Optionally SW-PXM and SW-PXE modules can be maintained and controlled via cell phone or internet connection. Additional components (water tank, well pumps, water distributing pumps) may be integrated.

PE-SWPX.DOC, Jun. 11

Disinfection with DOX (chlorine dioxide) In warm countries hygienic perfect water is very important. A sea water desalination plant produced germ-free water, but however in warm areas it will be contaminated very quickly with bacteria, viruses, algae or even dangerous single-celled organisms. The chlorine dioxide method hat following advantages:

- bactericidal, toxic against algae, spores, viruses and protozoa - 2.5 times more oxidation power than others like chorine, hydrogen peroxide - stronger and faster germinating than chlorine - constant disinfection at pH 6.5 to 9.5 - long affecting - lower costs than chlorine method - eliminates existing bio films - eliminates odors (phenol, smelling products of algae and bacteria) - does not form halogenated matters (trihalomethane = THM, chlorine phenol, AOX,

chlorin amine) - does not form chlorine and does not irritate mucous membranes - does not form explosive atmosphere, because the concentrate does not exceed 3 g/l - starting compounds are durable, solution ready for use is best before 4 weeks (at 20°C)

or 2 weeks (at 30°C)

Field of Application Some water, e.g. well water, contain too much iron or manganese. If you use this water red-brown residuals will occur, because heav-ily dissolving precipitated are forming.

Function The iron and/or manganese containing water passes the special fil-ter material with its catalytic surface. Iron and manganese are oxi-dized and form small flakes that will be taken up by the filter ma-terial. The free programmable time take care that the residues are flushed out regularly. During this flushing time you cannot pro-duce water. If the special filter material looses the catalytic ability with the time it is possible to regenerate it with potassium per-manganate.

Requirements for operation The water must be free of oils and hydrogen sulphide. The mini-mum oxygen concentration should be more than 15% (w/w) of the iron and manganese concentration. AquaCare is building custom made dosing units. Following components are used:

• dosing pumps (Grundfos, Iwaki, Prominent) in different design: performance, materials, controls

• delivery valves • static mixers • flow meters: electronically or with float • measuring cylinders for calibrating the whole unit • solenoid valves • pressure relief valves for the feed • controls: all possibilities unit PLC with visualizing • board unit, cabinet unit, frame unit made of PE, PVC, steel, stainless steel

Hardness dosing units for too soft waters For some applications the feed may be too soft or contains too less salts. For example: electrode steam units are work-ing only with a minimum electrical conductivity. If the wate has less salts the power is reduced and the water may foam. With a hardness dosing unit the electrical conductivity is raised and the risen total hardness prevents foaming. The water is supply from 0..10% of the maximum performance - even drop by drop. The AquaCare dosing units for raising the conductivity con-sists of:

• dosing pump • solenoid valve • pressure tank • chemikal tank • control with disturbance display • compact frame with all components

PE2DOS.DOC, Seite 2, Jun. 11; modifications possible

Dosing tanks with pumps For simple dosing tasks AquaCare offers a compacts tank with mounted dosing pump. There are different sizes of the tank and different versions of pumps and materials.

Static mixers / dosing lines For best mixing of the metered chemical a static mixer is useful. Inside the mixer high turbulences are gener-ated to mix the chemicals. AquaCare builds the static mixers in different materials (PVC or PP), in different diameters and with different connectors.

Dosing lines makes sense, if more than one chemical has to be dosed. AquaCare offer dosing lines in different materials, diameters and connectors.

Dosing pumps

Depending on purpose AquaCare offers dosing pumps of following manufactures: • Grundfos • Iwaki • Prominent

Backflow Preventer and blending valve

Nitrate Elimination Unit NO3-...

Duplex softener unit, water volume controlled, for softening iron and manganese free drinking water, automatically working 5-step central valve type 9000 made of red bronce, with adapter for sec-ond bottle, 2 pressure tanks made of corrosion free GRP, nitrate se-lective anion resin of best quality, 1 brine tank with sieve bottom and floating valve, unit preinstalled.

If a nitrate elimination filter is connected to the public water net, a water stop valve must be used before the unit. If the water pressure of the tap water is below the minimum pres-sure the water stop valve closes the water line to prevent flow brine of the nitrate elimination filter back to the water net.

A blending valve is useful to mix the treated water with feed water to adjust the wished ni-trate concentration.

Problematic nature According to the drinking water regula-tions water must have a minimum of hardness. Water from reverse osmosis units is extremely soft and does not con-tain hardness. To add calcium and hydro-gen carbonate a mineral filter might be connected after an R.O. unit.

Function The carbonic acid that is still in the per-meate of a reverse osmosis unit is able to dissolve the calcite containing material of the mineral filter. The water will be sup-plied with calcium and hydrogen carbon-ate.

General information If the water contains bacteria or if the wa-ter has temperature above 15°C the min-eral filter should be disinfected regularly.

The booster units made by AquaCare are mounted on a stable plastic plate and equipped for wall mounting. Optional a foot is available. The build in roto-vane pump generates pressures up to 16 bar and is deliverable in different flows. The connected pressure tank (membrane tank) enlarges the operation intervals and en-ables extreme low water flows. Pressures for putting on and off the pump are ad-justable. The actual water pressure is dis-play at a pressure gauge. It is possible to protect the pump against run dry: e.g. level switch, pressure switch.
