Who are Northumberland Players?

Northumberland Players is live, local, and committed to bringing quality theatre to the

whole family. Over 10,000 people attended our productions last year. In its 40 years,

Northumberland Players has won Theatre Ontario awards for performance, directing,

music and production. They also have a very active Youth Theatre which performs a

major children’s Christmas production and runs drama camps throughout the summer

months.

Northumberland Players provides opportunities in all aspects of quality theatre –– over

250 enthusiastic, un-paid volunteers who work as actors, directors, producers, set

builders, costume makers, etc., are proof there is passion for live theatre in

Northumberland County.

When you attend a not-for-profit theatre company performance, your entertainment

dollars stay in the community, the cultural and economic benefits rippling throughout

Northumberland County. We truly suppport Buy Local Northumberland.

Be a Player: There are many roles! Volunteers participate in all aspects of community

theatre in acting, artistic, backstage, clerical, construction, production and/or technical

roles on the production teams or in administrative roles. Many have "learned on the

job" and you can too. For more information on all the things you could do and to sign

Director's Notes

What’s it like to put together a big musical theatre piece? It starts with Beth assembling a group of pathologically dedicated volunteers ready to head up the departments you see listed in this program. I thank them all for their patience and perseverance. Then come the auditions. And because Northumberland Players is a community theatre group, we welcome as many folks to the stage as we possibly can. Now on to the rehearsals to learn the music (thank you, Lynda and Bruce) and the dance numbers (thank you, Toni) and finally it’s my turn to move the cast about, hopefully to illustrate the story and maybe squeeze in a few laughs. We throw in some lights, some sets, and some wonderful musicians. That’s the sum of it really. And yet there’s so much more. Amidst the chaos and ever-looming deadline of opening night, lots of great friendships grow. And although we may not see each other often after this is over, we gather memories that will last a lifetime. Not a bad deal at all. We hope you have as much fun watching our show as we did putting it together. Cheers!

Producer’s Notes

Putting the Community in Community Theatre

I love theatre – I love everything about theatre – lights, sound, costumes, make up, props, sets, music, auditions, performers – I love it all. Producing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat has reminded me why we do theatre and it has been an honour and a joy to be a part of this process. The cast and crew of Joseph number close to 100. They have developed from a group of individuals to a cohesive unit, very much like a family. We first cast the youth chorus in June and since then we have seen each other through sickness, chronic illness, death, birthdays, new jobs, promotions and awards – basically the highs and lows of life. But as with many families, these highs and lows brought us closer together and lifelong friendships and support systems have been forged. Yes, when the sets come down at the end of the production most of us will go onto other shows but the memories of this one will last a very long time. Thank you to this wonderfully dedicated cast and crew – every once in a while the stars align and you have a dream production team backing up an incredibly talented cast. Our cast and crew range in age from five to well over eighty (I won’t tell how far). You may see your teacher, your custodian, your house painter, your personal trainer, your bank teller even a fireman or two gracing the stage. These are the members of the community who drove through snow storms to get to rehearsals, who practiced endless dance routines and musical numbers so that they could present the very best show they could. To those who rose to the challenge of building this amazing set, to those who painted for hours, days, weeks, to those who sewed for months; who attended pit band rehearsals; applied make up and the many many other jobs – you too are an integral part of this family. You all put the amazing in the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat and for that I cannot thank you enough. Part of my heart belongs to Jim Finan – the creative, slightly mad, wonderfully zany and multi-award winning theatre director who brought this show to life. His vision is pure magic and I’m proud to have been a part of it. So here’s to families – both established and brand new – on stage and in the audience. In the words of Jim Finan “Embrace the silly”. Words to live by.
