PNC NEWS
The PNC is hard at work doing the job that the
congregation called us to do. We will have reviewed
about 45 to 50 Personal Information Forms by the
time you read this newsletter. We are learning about
the process of evaluation and continually trying to find
ways to be more efficient and productive. I have been in contact with
Church Leadership Connection of PCUSA and they have been helpful
by offering advice to help us with our process. The PNC committee
asks that you be patient and to continually remember us in your pray-
ers. We look forward to meeting the new interim pastor and gleaning
ideas from his expertise.
INTERIM PASTOR CALL APPROVED
BY THE SESSION
Pending approval from Presbytery on January 10th,
Arch Baker will be serving as our Interim Pastor
soon. Arch has been pastoring churches for 30 years
and has completed three interim assignments with the
successful call of a permanent pastor. He and his wife, Pat, live in
Lilburn and he will be finding living quarters in Cleveland. A more
detailed introduction will come soon. We thank God through the
Holy Spirit for bringing us together.

The Presbyterian Women enjoyed a Christmas luncheon and party on December 13th in the Fellowship
Hall. The menu was varied and delicious. The Naughty Santa gift exchange proved to be fun, and the ladies
from The Growing Place joined in the festivities while still wearing their pajamas! No boring parties in our
Church.

ROTARY DONATION TO FPC
The White County Rotary Club meets in the Fellowship Hall each week for a catered
lunch meeting. They are active supporters of community programs and many of our
leading business people are in our church building weekly. At a recent meeting they made
a contribution of $750 that more than covers our
expenses for utilities. We are happy to be able to
offer our facilities to them and other groups
providing service to our community.

THE THINGS I LEARNED IN SUNDAY SCHOOL
What is a Presbyterian?
If someone asks you this question, here are a few simple answers:
In the New Testament,"Presbuteros" means elder, and refers to the custom of
choosing leaders and advisors from among the wisest members of the church.
The Presbyterian denomination is a form of Christianity democratically organized to
embrace the faith common to all Christians.
All that is required to be a Presbyterian is to Confess the Christian faith; Trust in Christ as our forgiving
Savior; Promise to follow Christ and Christ's example for living; Commit oneself to attend church and to
become involved in its work.
If someone expresses interest in your faith and our church, invite them to come to a service one Sunday
soon. They'll experience a warm welcome!
Text for this article, and more about the Presbyterian faith, are found in "About Being Presbyterian: a guide to more
effective church membership," 2010 edition.

SPECIAL MUSIC
Guest performer, Camilla Escobar, sang and played guitar for FPC on December 23rd.
Camila is the granddaughter of Lindalee Walters. She did a beautiful rendition
of “Mary Did You Know.”
CHOIR IN THE COMMUNITY
James Geiger, staff accompanist for FPC
Cleveland, is not only busy making music at
church, but also being very involved in the music
community here in Northeast Georgia.
During the week, James is the Director of Bands at South
Habersham Middle School in Cornelia and also an Instructor of
Music Composition and Applied Percussion at Piedmont College
in Demorest. He also sings in the Mountain Voices Community
Choir, which presents concerts at Clarkesville United Methodist
Church throughout the year.
In the last twelve months, two of James’s music compositions for
concert band have received premiere performances at Piedmont
College. The first piece, titled “Lac-Mégantic Overture,” is a
symphonic elegy dedicated to the 47 people who perished after a
train derailed and exploded in a small town in Quebec. The other
work, “When He Cometh,” is an arrangement of the George F.
Root hymn-tune “Jewels,” which was popular the middle of the
19th Century. This band piece was very special to James as it was
dedicated to the memory of his grandmother, Virginia Walls, who
had recently passed away.
By: James Geiger
Currently, James is working on a choral suite based on three poems of the Victorian poet Alfred, Lord
Tennyson (1809-1892). Entitled “Three Meditations on Life and Death,” James sets these poems in different
musical styles based on his interpretation of the poetic verse.
The Piedmont Chorale will give the premiere performance of “Three Meditations on Life and Death”
sometime in April of 2019. This is James’s first large scale work for large chorus. He will start work on a
work for string orchestra this summer with the hopes for a performance at Truett-McConnell University in
the fall.

CHRISTMAS CANTATA—A JOYOUS CELEBRATION!
"Go Sing it on the Mountain," a joyous celebration of music, song, and praise for Jesus' birth, was presented
Sunday, December 16 at First Presbyterian Church. The choir, area musicians, local students, and narrators
joined in the presentation. A festive reception in the Fellowship Hall, hosted by the Presbyterian Women,
followed the service.
Guest performers joined us from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School and Piedmont College.

OUR CHILDREN’S JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM
One of the highlights of our Advent season this year was Our Children’s Journey to
Bethlehem! Over 50 of us came together with 17 of our children that are a part of our
family through Kids First, Camp Growing Place, or the Growing Place Preschool. Our
children were beautiful vessels to let the Light of Jesus shine through them and brighten
the world around them! The service opened with an opportunity for each person to
offer a “piece of straw” to prepare the manger for the coming of our Lord. As Tucker
and Annelise read the story of the birth of the Baby Jesus, Mr. David and Mr. James led the congregation in
beautiful Christmas carols as our younger children were escorted to the stable dressed as adorable live
nativity figures. As the stable filled with Mary and
Joseph, angels and shepherds, three kings, sheep, a
cow, and the donkey (“hee haw”), the story came
alive with the true meaning of Christmas. As a
conclusion, the congregation was once again invited
to come forward, choose a star or two, and offer it
as a symbol of our gifts that we bring to Jesus this
Christmas. Together, our offerings created the
illusion of a starry night sky that welcomed the birth
of the Newborn King. We all joined hands and sang
together “Silent Night, Holy Night” before we
departed to spread the Light of Jesus into the world.
