The University Animal Hospital, located in Tempe, Arizona was established in 1962. It is the second oldest veterinary practice in the entire east valley. The original hospital has since grown from two veterinarians and a staff of five, to eleven veterinarians and a staff of seventy. The hospital moved to a new building in 1996 which was specifically designed and constructed to facilitate better care of small animals.

Animals have a calming effect on our stressful, high-energy lifestyle; they become our “best friends,” offering companionship and unconditional love. Pets have been known to reduce depression and blood pressure, and have a calming, positive effect on our long-term health. Naturally, pet owners now have higher expectations when it comes to veterinary care for this important member of the family.

We have responded to this demand by offering state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, improved animal care products, and specialized surgical equipment. The animal industry has increased investment in education, research, equipment, and treatment facilities, providing pet owners with more options and better resources.

Progressive Dental CareThe number one health problem diagnosed in cats and dogs over 4 years of age is periodontal disease. Dental disease puts stress on your pet’s immune system and can lead to serious liver, kidney and heart disease. We provide an extensive dental care program. When dental services are needed we use the safest anesthesia available with advanced monitoring, digital dental x-rays, fluoride treatment, ultrasonic scaling and polishing. Optimum dental care truly is a fountain of youth for your pet.

Advanced Parasite and Zoonotic ControlParasitic Zoonoses are diseases of animals that can be transmitted to people. The growing popularity of cats and dogs and the high rate of worm infestations can result in widespread soil contamination from parasites. We offer advanced parasite control to help keep your pet and your family safe.

We Love Our Senior PetsDogs and cats over the age of 7 are seniors and need special attention. They are at risk for the development of cancer, diabetes and other serious medical conditions. Often these conditions come on gradually, and the pet’s family cannot detect the ongoing discomfort they may cause. To keep your pet feeling his best, and with you as long as possible, we recommend twice yearly checkups along with diagnostic testing to screen for common geriatric disorders.

Complete In-House Laboratory – Our complete in-house laboratory gives us rapid point of care abilities when we’re treating sick or injured pets, and allows us to properly evaluate every surgical case prior to anesthesia.

Multi-Parameter Anesthesia Monitor – Every anesthetized patient is monitored with state of the art anesthesia monitors. This allows us to constantly evaluate patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, ECG, body temperature and oxygenation throughout the surgical and dental procedures.

Surgical Services – We provide all types of soft tissue and most orthopedic surgical services. If your pet requires surgery, our doctors will make sure that you understand all aspects of the surgery and all options available. We take great care to make sure that your beloved pets are treated as if they were our own.

Surgical Laser – Our surgical laser offers several advantages over conventional surgery in many procedures: decreased tissue trauma, decreased postoperative swelling, decreased bleeding, decreased pain, and sterilization of the surgical field.

Pain management is critical to your pet’s recovery, so we take a proactive approach to ensure that your pet is as comfortable as possible using the most effective medications available. We employ preventative pain management strategies using laser therapy, local anesthetics, narcotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs. Medications are dispensed for all surgical procedures, wounds, dental extractions, and senior arthritis management.

Digital Radiology – Digital radiology provides images literally in seconds. These images can be enlarged and enhanced to improve diagnostic capability. The images can also be electronically transmitted to a board certified veterinary radiologist for review and the consultation report can be returned in minutes if needed.

Your Hospitalized PetWe know your pet will feel more at ease with you at home, but sometimes sick patients need services that can only be performed in the hospital. We strive to keep the length of hospital stays as brief as possible.

While in the hospital your pet will rest comfortably in our hospital treatment room where our loving staff can maintain a watchful eye and provide caring attention.

Your pet’s doctor will call you often to inform you of your pet’s progress. Additionally, our veterinary technicians are available to answer any questions or concerns.

Boarding / Grooming Health RequirementsWe require all pets in for boarding or grooming to show proof of current vaccinations from a licensed veterinarian. If vaccinations are not up-to-date, they will be administered by one of our veterinarians at the time of boarding or grooming. Dogs automatically receive a flea and tick treatment upon arrival at the kennel.

Exotic and Pocket PetsWe have a special interest in exotic pet medicine.
