Pray:

Our Senior Pastor preaches on YouTube this afternoon.

This is a difficult and important subject in Scripture.

Pray for Holy Spirit Power for him and the furtherance of the Gospel. 2

We return to Genesis Chapter 40 this morning.

Context: Remember that Joseph was sold as a slave by his brothers and served

in Potiphar’s house in Egypt. Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him, but failed

because Joseph ran away. Later, she got Joseph thrown in prison.

1 And it came to pass after these things, [that] the butler of the king of Egypt

and [his] baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

2 [ and …. Ask him to preach the same sermon at IIBC! ] > 80% of our current congregation are 1

st language

Korean speakers. They will not mind if the sermon is preached in Korean and then translated into English. IIBC

has over four translators who could translate the Korean to English.

Butler: Cup bearer. 3

- Later in Scripture we will see Nehemiah, in Persia, who was a cupbearer to the

king.

Baker: Cook. 4

Offended: Sinned. 5

3 And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the

prison, the place where Joseph [was] bound.

Ward: prison. 7

Bound: kept, put in bonds. 8

Compare:

Psalm 105:16 Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he brake

the whole staff of bread.

17 He sent a man before them, [even] Joseph, [who] was sold for a

servant:

18 Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron:

We see from this Psalm that Joseph suffered because of his brothers.

Now back to Genesis Chapter 40:

4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them:

and they continued a season in ward.

So Joseph, a Hebrew slave, who is now a prisoner of Pharaoh, was put in charge

of the chief butler [cupbearer] and the baker.

5 And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night,

each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker

of the king of Egypt, which [were] bound in the prison.

9 Fetters: H3525 כבל kebel keh'-bel From an unused root meaning to twine or braid together; a fetter: - fetter.

Total KJV occurrences: 2.

bearer, or butler, to the king of Egypt was the means of raising Joseph to his high position (Gen_40:12;

Gen_41:9). Rabshakeh, who was sent by Sennacherib to Hezekiah, appears from his name to have filled a like

office in the Assyrian court (2Ki_18:17; Gesen. Thesaur. p. 1225), and it seems probable, from his association

with Rab-saris (chief of the eunuchs), and from Eastern custom in general, that he was, like him, a eunuch

(Gesen. p. 973). SEE RABSHAKEH. Herod the Great had an establishment of eunuchs, of whom one was a cup-

bearer (Josephus, Ant. 16:8, 1). Nehemiah was cupbearer to Artaxerxes Longimanus, king of Persia (Neh_1:11;

Neh_2:1). Cup- bearers are mentioned among the attendants of Solomon (1Ki_10:5; 2Ch_9:4; so Achiacharus,

Both the butler and the baker had dreams on the same night.

6 And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and,

behold, they [were] sad.

Joseph ‘paid attention’.

He knew his job.

He did his job.

He ‘followed up’.

7 And he asked Pharaoh's officers that [were] with him in the ward of his lord's

house, saying, Wherefore look ye [so] sadly to day?

Joseph noticed that something was wrong.

Parents: please pay attention to your children.

Watch their faces.

Keep your eyes and ears open, and pray for them every day.

Your children can not escape your prayers.

8 And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and [there is] no

interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, [Do] not interpretations [belong] to

God? tell me [them], I pray you.

Joseph is a gifted man; yet he is a humble man.

Joseph gives all the glory to God, even before he attempts to interpret the

dreams.

Joseph has had some experience with his own dreams.

But I believe that this statement is also a step of faith.

Joseph’s dreams from his early youth have not come true yet.

- But I believe that he still believes in them; even though he may not be

certain how they will exactly come out.

9 And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream,

behold, a vine [was] before me;

10 And in the vine [were] three branches: and it [was] as though it budded, [and]

her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:

11 And Pharaoh's cup [was] in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed

them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

12 And Joseph said unto him, This [is] the interpretation of it: The three

branches [are] three days:

God gave the interpretation of the dream to Joseph.

12

Nehemiah 8:8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused [them] to

understand the reading.

Joseph gave the interpretation just the way that God gave it to him.

13 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto

thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former

manner when thou wast his butler.

14 But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray

thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this

house:

Is the chief butler listening to Joseph at this point?

Probably not!

15 For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also

have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.

Do people really want to hear the story of a convict? [No.]

Now we get to hear the chief baker’s dream.

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto

Joseph, I also [was] in my dream, and, behold, [I had] three white baskets on

my head:

17 And in the uppermost basket [there was] of all manner of bakemeats for

Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.

Bakemeats: baked goods. 13

What were these bake meats? We don’t know for sure.

13 Bakemeats: H3978 מאכל ma'akal mah-ak-awl'’From H398; an eatable (including provender, flesh and fruit): -

food, fruit, ([bake-]) meat (-s), victual. Total KJV occurrences: 30

18 And Joseph answered and said, This [is] the interpretation thereof: The three

19 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall

hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.

This dream’s ending is not a good one?

The baker will be hanged.

Notice how Joseph told it just as God gave it to him.

20 And it came to pass the third day, [which was] Pharaoh's birthday, that he

made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler

and of the chief baker among his servants.

21 And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the

cup into Pharaoh's hand:

The butler survived.

22 But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

The baker didn’t survive.

Why?

All we know for sure is that ‘That’s what Pharaoh decided’.

Perhaps: If you bake for Pharaoh, don’t let the birds eat his doughnuts!

23 Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.

Joseph is forgotten by those who he helped.

However, God sees it all, knows it all, and has great plans for Joseph.

May I challenge you to dream and pray for IIBC?

What if peace broke out and an effectual door was opened all the way from

Japan back to Jerusalem [Pray.]?

Well, that is impossible.

- Not with God!

Would we be ready with language speakers, Gospel literature in those languages,

and maker/helper skills to pioneer teams into and through that holy door by

faith?

Would you go, if God called you?

You may say, He hasn’t called me.

So, now I am going to say to you; Are you listening for His call?

Would you send?

You know, if IIBC is not selfish; and prays, and gives, and goes themselves

with respect to world-wide missions; God will bless IIBC.

Pray, read your Bible, go to church, witness, tithe, and give to missions.

God can do anything. We can also, with Him.

In 2020; One of IIBC’s missionaries has had Gospel material

INVITATION: Every head bowed and every eye closed, please. Christians:

Confess known sin; then pray for God to bless the Invitation.

Three questions:

1. Are you saved?

Are you born again from above.

If You died today are your 100% sure that you would go to heaven.

If you are not saved, we would love to take a Bible and show you how

you can know for sure that you are saved.

2. Have you been baptized by immersion, since salvation, in a church of

like faith and practice?

If you are saved and have not yet been baptized by immersion, I would

like you to let Pastor Tchah know that this morning.

The Lord Jesus was baptized by immersion by John The Baptist.

The Disciples and Apostles were baptized by Immersion.

The Lord Jesus commanded his disciples to preach and teach the Gospel,

baptizing those who got saved. 15

Baptism therefore, is a command to be obeyed.

There is nothing to be nervous about. We are family and friends here.

3. Are you ready to meet God?

a. We all should be ready to pray, to give testimony about the Lord,

or to pass away.

b. Is there any bitterness on your heart?

c. Is there any sin that you need to confess to God, silently, as you

pray?

Fini.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in

earth. Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the

Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:

and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
