Dorothy Higi, Papal Honoree

On September 3rd, I was able to rejoice with my friend and our great ministry leader as Archbishop Gomez presented Dorothy Higi with the highest Papal Honor bestowed on the laity in the Church. It is the "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice" Award, loosely translated "For the Church and the Pope."This honor is reserved for lay leaders in the Service of our Church. Dorothy has been a gift in the service of American Martyrs, and beyond our own parish. I am so grateful that Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, bestowed this honor on our friend. All of us in our American Martyrs Family congratulate you and thank your for all you have done and are doing in ministry. We love you. God bless you Fr. John Barry

Are you caring for your vineyard?People who care for others often forget to care for themselves. But if we don’t care for ourselves, we won’t have the energy, stamina and patience we need to help the ones we love.If you’re a caregiver who could use some attention yourself, or someone struggling with a crisis in life, let a Stephen Minister help you. A Stephen Minister is a confidential partner who meets with you weekly to help you process the challenge in your life. Are you ready to care for yourself? Leave a message on our Stephen Ministry confidential phone line at 310-545-8244. Deacon Dick and Patti Williams will meet with you to explore whether a Stephen Minister may be a good fit for you.

ContaCt: Deacon Dick Williams, [email protected]

Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodIn light of the recent natural disasters and the upwelling of community support, I've heard the phrase "That restores my faith in humanity" a little too often. I guess I never lost my faith in the human ability to react compassionately about someone's suffering. The word community has also come up a lot recently in news stories connected with the natural disasters and also in conversations with friends. I applaud all the people who stepped up to help their neighbors during the hurricanes and the earthquake in Mexico and all the people across the country who contributed money and goods to help the survivors. These community efforts usually get the headlines, as they should. But there are many more efforts, somewhat more focused, that unify the community closer to us.Two examples come to mind. First, we heard of a parishioner who collects used bicycles throughout the year. He refurbishes them and delivers them to our sister parish at Christmas. This is one person on a personal mission to help children who are less fortunate.Another example came to my attention over a dinner with friends. They are involved in an exercise group outside of our parish. One of the participants made it known that she was about to start cancer treatments and would not be attending some of the regular exercise sessions. There was concern all around and most people knew that a

consequence of the treatment would be hair loss. So they came up with a support plan. There were members who had a talent for knitting and they plan to knit caps for the afflicted person with one cap ready after each of the treatments. There were also several who were good at decorating the caps with pins

and other embellishments. They also got involved. These are two examples of a stewardship way of life. There was no headline news, no recognition from government officials, just a personal feeling that they did something to help a fellow human being.I'm sure we all wish we could do something on a heroic scale; but in reality our efforts are sometimes better applied in smaller ways. Stewardship requires us to share our gifts and maybe in sharing our gifts we should remember the adage "Think globally, act locally."

Please contact us at [email protected], with questions or comments about Stewardship.

We are all called to be saints. And we are called to make saints!

This Respect Life Month, we are remembering saints who were fed by prayer, heard the call, and answered it to become missionary disciples. They built the kingdom of God in their midst. Sts. Ann and JoachimThey were regular parents. But they raised Mary, the greatest saint of all time, and they were the grandparents of Jesus! Their ministry was to be holy parents and to live their vocation.

action is to, for the second year in a row,

"Green the Parish Fair." Stop by the Go Green Booth to learn about

what AMC is doing to "Go Green." The Social Justice and Outreach Commission and the

Creation Care Team are working so you can learn some simple steps families can use to take care of the

environment. At the Fair, look for the waste sorting stations to lessen the landfill load and at the dinner,

recycle your bottles and cans.Go Green!!

“The Psalms: the Prayer of Jesus and Our Song Today”Through November 14

Jesus prayed the Psalms. So do we. The Psalms describe the fears, anguish and despair, the heartfelt longing, and the ultimate deliverance and gratitude of the people of God. Today we pick up the printed Word of God and hold it in our hands. In the time of Jesus, chant, song and spoken word facilitated memorization of the Psalms as shared by the people of God.Since the beginning of time, humanity has lived the polarities of life. Our lives today are noisy and complicated. God speaks into the complex circumstances of our lives. In the universal bond of unbroken silence, we are reminded that the Love of God continues to reign in our hearts and over all things bright and beautiful What do we do? Very simply, we begin with a brief reading, followed by two 20-minute periods of silent prayer, pray together “Our Father,” and close with brief Benedictine night prayer.Join us once, often or always, for the Love of it! Newcomers are always welcome. ministRy ContaCt: Donna Ennis 310-941-1349

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Evaluate playgrounds for safetyBefore you let a child enjoy the playground, it is important to check the safety features of the park or playground area. Make sure children are using height-appropriate swings, slides and ladders. Equipment should be mounted on shock-absorbent materials and not hard surfaces, and children should be able to move easily between equipment.For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Playground Safety,” visit ht t p : / /w w w . l a - a r c h d i o c e s e . o r g / o r g / p r o t e c t i n g / P a g e s / V I R T U S - C u r r e n t -O n l i n e -Ar t i c l e s. a s px or call 213-637-7508.For particular help, call Assistance Ministry at 213-637-7650.

When we pray, we join a steady stream of prayer that began more than 2,000 years ago. With our world around us constantly in a state of flux, there is a special grace in knowing there is a place that is sacred and unchanging, a place where we can go to be renewed in the love that is ours by way of God’s grace. We all have gifts differing. There are many pathways to prayer.

SCHOOL STUDENT NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICYThe school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color, national and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, medical condition, sex, or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies and practices, scholarship programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single sex schools. While the school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student’s emotional, academic, and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student’s needs.
