Last Friday’s gathering of our three Campus schools on the Gleeson Oval represented a highly significant and important occasion, as we all we paused to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts, and all those who have served during the past 100 years.

At 5am on 11 November 1918, three German government representatives accepted the armistice terms presented to them by an allied commander, General Foch of the French Army. The armistice became effective at 11am the same day, and as the guns fell silent on the Western Front in France and Belgium, four years of hostilities ended.

The armistice ended World War I and came into force, bringing to an end four years of hostilities that saw 61,919 Australians die at sea, in the air, and on foreign soil. Few Australians families were left untouched by the events of World War I – ‘the war to end all wars’ – most had lost a father, son, daughter, brother, sister, relative or friend.

In Australia and the other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day – a day to remember those who died in World War I. After World War II, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom’s proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. In October 1997 the Governor-General issued a Proclamation declaring 11 November as Remembrance Day – a day to remember the sacrifice of all those who have died for Australia in wars and conflicts.

AN IMPORTANT TIME TO NOT ‘LET DOWN THE GUARD’

One+ Centenary Commemoration of Remembrance DayRemembrance Day is always very special at Gleeson College. We are privileged to have a close association with the Defence Forces through our considerable family connections and our Defence Transition Mentor, Mrs Linda DeBoer. Last week on Friday, we held a moving ceremony to commemorate the centenary of Remembrance Day which included a RAAF catafalque party, a speech from special guest Squadron Leader Kevin Corney and a poignant rendition of ‘In Flanders’s Fields’ sung ‘a cappella’ by students from our three schools. Gleeson College, Golden Grove High School and Pedare Christian College students and staff all gathered on our oval for this significant event, which was beautifully organised and executed.

I would like to acknowledge the wonderful organisation of the service by Ms Amanda Price and Mrs Linda DeBoer. Thank you to the students and staff of all three schools for their contribution and involvement on the day, and especially to our student cadets who formed a guard for the catafalque party, and Mrs Carly Meakin and our talented vocalists.

As part of the special commemoration ceremonies this year at the War Memorial

in Adelaide, our students made poppies, which along with several thousand poppies from many other schools, were dropped from an aeroplane over the War Memorial in the city on Sunday, November 11. Imagine the surprise (and the odds) when Ms Amanda Price’s young son picked up not one, but five of our Gleeson poppies from the several thousand dropped that day!

PE Week CelebrationsPE Week was celebrated at Gleeson College this week with an excellent program of activities in which a great number of students and staff participated with skill and enthusiasm. Well done and thank you to Mr Danny Gloria and all the staff and students who organised and participated in the program.

Year 7 and 8 Transition ProgramThis week we welcomed our 2019 Year 7 and 8 students through a comprehensive induction program run over two days. Our new students worked side by side with existing students on a number of exciting activities. They met a few of the teachers and enjoyed a taste of the various subjects they will undertake in the future. It has been a pleasure to meet the new students this week and we very much look forward to working with them in the years to come.

Congratulations to Ms Amanda Price who has done a wonderful job putting together the transition program, and thank you to all staff involved in welcoming our new Year 7 and 8 students for 2019.

FinaleThe school year is fast approaching its finale with Year 12 students concluding examinations soon, Year 11 students commencing examinations next week and Year 10s the week after. It is an important time of endings, celebrations, opportunities and new beginnings.

At this time, it is important to not ‘let down the guard’ and to continue our high level of expectations with regard to school work, behaviour and uniform. We want to ‘wind up’ the year well not ‘wind down’ to a poor finish.

I wish all of our students the very best as they undertake important assessments in the coming weeks and trust that they are striving to achieve their very best.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM > 100 Year Centenary CommemorationAt 11am on this year’s Remembrance Day Commemoration in the city, a Cessna called ‘Possum’, which completed multiple tours of duty during the Vietnam War, dropped more than 30,000 Remembrance poppies over the War Memorial area on North Terrace in Adelaide City. Students from schools from around South Australia were offered the opportunity to make and contribute poppies to this drop, and our Gleeson College students were amongst the contributors for this special tribute. Special thanks to Darryl Hill (ex RAAF) who not only piloted ‘Possum’, but also coordinated the collation of the poppies. Darryl’s Grandfather, John Bowman, was among the first troops ashore at the Gallipoli landing.

We celebrated the achievements of our 2018 Saturday Morning teams at a Sports Presentation Assembly held

in the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre on Wednesday 7 November.

We were fortunate to have a special guest speaker in GC Old Scholar

and former A-League star defender Daniel Mullen address the audience and chat about his sporting journey.

Daniel graduated from Gleeson in 2007 and went on to a highly

successful professional career in soccer, representing his country in the Under 20 and Under 23s, and playing both here in the A-League, and abroad at Dalian Aerbin in the Chinese Super League. Daniel has a wealth of expertise and

knowledge of the World game and we kindly thank him for sharing his story, including some of the difficulties he

encountered after moving away from home at a young age to pursue his

footballing dreams and the importance of having a back-up plan in place for when his professional football career

ended.

The inclusion of our Year 7 students to our Saturday Morning Sport teams has

added a new dimension to our program, and to see our Senior students stick around to watch and encourage the

Juniors, is something truly special. The success of our sporting teams at Gleeson College would not be achieved if not for the great commitment and dedication of the students, coaches, parents, and teachers involved. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and

sincerely thank our dedicated coaches in 2018, who always go above and beyond for our students, and without them we would not be able to enter the amount of Saturday morning teams that we do.

Performing Arts students across Years 7 to 12 took to the stage in a spooky, Halloween-themed concert held in the Golden Grove Arts Centre last week.

The costumes were fabulous and so were the performances, with items from Concert Band, Stage Band,

Concert Choir, Rock Bands, Dancers, Class bands, Creative Arts and

Drama students.

The concert was a celebration of the work students have put in over the

course of the year, and also served asa farewell concert for our outgoing Year 12 Performing Arts students.

YEAR 12 VISUAL ART EXHIBITION > Exceptional Talent on Display in 2018

We were exposed to a fantastic range of artistic work produced by our Year 12 Art and Design students at this year’s Stage 2 Visual Art Exhibition held recently.

Creative and varied, the practical pieces showcased some of the exceptional talent we have here at Gleeson.

The Year 12 Art and Design students focused on their own pursuits across a wide range of fields. The art work covered a range of themes, styles, and media including water colour, pens, oil and acrylic paint, graphite and coloured pencils, and mixed media. The Design work focused mainly around branding and Identity

packages, promoting businesses, product/industrial design and advertising. Overall it was an exceptional evening.

We wish all our Stage 2 Visual Arts Students all the best and hope the skills and knowledge gained from this area will help them in their future careers.

Our Year 10 Mathematics Class went on an excursion to the city to visit the Myer Centre and Adventure Rooms last week. Prior to the trip, students had to determine the cost of getting

the class to the city, the most cost effective route and the transport that

would take us there (using public

transport/private bus). Students were allocated a budget for the excursion, which included their lunch money and

their ticket to ride to the city.

The visit to Adventure Rooms was to encourage the class to work as a

team and use problem solving skills to

get out of the room. Students looked for clues and solved several different puzzles using trial and error, and used

their skills of observation to escape the room. Well done to all students!

Problem solving, creativity and teamwork were at the heart of a

workshop that Year 8 Home Economics (Sewing) students were involved in

with Fashion and Costume Designer Belinda Zanello last week!

Students had the choice of which session they wanted to be a part of - Micro Fashion, or Cosplay. Belinda

explained how Micro Fashion is often the starting point for many dressmakers and designers as it

teaches you the principals of pattern making and creating your own

fashion – and it’s much faster making

YEAR 8 HOME ECONOMICS > STEAM in Fashion Design!

small mock-ups of your designs than creating them in real life! Cosplay,

encouraged students to use a variety of recycled and up-cycled resources

as well as a variety of technologies to create a character of choice.

Students were not given a set of instructions on how to sew together

their creations, instead they used problem-solving skills and asked specific questions to get the help

they required. They quickly learnt that making a mistake was a great thing, as it helped them to better understand

fabric properties, how to use a pattern and how to construct their designs.

Students got to show off their designs and creations at the end of the

workshop in a photo shoot. Everyone loved seeing the variety of designs that

theirs peers created!

Students who are interested in Fashion Design at Gleeson can choose to study

Home Ec in Years 7, 8 and 9, where they complete a term of cooking and

term of sewing. Then in Year 10, students can choose to study Fashion

Design as a stand-alone subject!

CARTRIDGES 4 PLANET ARK >Recycling Printer Cartridges @ Gleeson CollegeCartridges 4 Planet Ark is an

innovative recycling program that provides Australians with a free,

easy and environmentally-accredited way to recycle their used printer

cartridges.

As cartridges are made up of a complex mix of plastics, metal, inks and toners they represent a

significant investment in resources. When they are disposed of into landfill these resources are lost.

That’s why Planet Ark joined with Close the Loop and the

participating manufacturers to set up the innovative Cartridges 4

Planet Ark program. This program collects and returns cartridges for

remanufacturing and recycling - therefore keeping them out of landfill. Our Melbourne-based

recycling partner, Close the Loop®, is independently audited on an annual basis for its zero waste to

landfill guarantee.

Planet Ark is successfully working with Brother, Canon, Epson, HP, Konica Minolta and Kyocera to collectively take responsibility

for the end life of their products. This voluntary Extended Producer

Responsibility (EPR) program is one of the most successful of its type in

the world.
