Wea Ridge Middle School
November 2017
November is the month that is most often associated with giving thanks. It is a time to celebrate
and give thanks for the special friends and family that are a part of our lives. On November 11th,
the nation will be remembering and thanking the men and women of the armed forces who have
served our country. Wea Ridge Middle School will be honoring these selfless men and women on
November 10th, with a school wide Veteran’s Day program at 9:30am. We invite you to join us as
we honor the sacrifices of the family members of our students and staff at our program.
The success of students at Wea Ridge is rooted in the support they receive at home. I appreciate
the time spent outside of the school day supporting the instruction of our teachers. We know that
kids are more successful in school when parents take an active interest in their homework - it
shows kids that what they do is important. Here are a few ideas to help with homework in the
evening:
Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a well-lit place to com-
plete homework. Keep supplies — paper, pencils, glue, scissors — within reach.
Schedule a regular study time. Some kids work best in the afternoon, follow-
ing a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait until after dinner.
Help them make a plan. When there's an especially hefty assignment to tack-
le, encourage your child break up the work into manageable chunks. Create a work
schedule for the night if necessary — and take time for a 15-minute break every hour,
if possible.
Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music, or phone calls.
(Occasionally, though, a phone call to a classmate about an assignment can be help-
ful.)
Make sure kids do their own work. They won't learn if they don't think for
themselves and make their own mistakes. Parents can make suggestions and help with
directions. But it's a kid's job to do the learning.
Be a motivator and monitor. Ask about assignments, quizzes, and tests. Give
encouragement, check completed homework, and make yourself available for questions
and concerns.
Set a good example. Do your kids ever see you diligently balancing your budg-
et or reading a book? Kids are more likely to follow their parents' examples than their
advice.

Counselor Connection
Our students spent time in October learning about ways we can all be upstanders in our school by taking a stand against bullying and making sure we make the right choices. The students signed our pledge poster. I
also spoke with all students in English classes. I have posted some resources on the school website that parents can access for more information about bullying including books that students can check out of our school library, as well as a special Dateline NBC documentary that focused on bullying scenarios. This would
be great to watch and discuss with your child.
Thank you parents who attended Coffee with the Counselor and Husky Parent Association for sponsoring this event. It is great to be able to connect with some parents, and share information. Be on the lookout in
future newsletters for the next date and registration link.
Any requests for 2nd semester schedule changes (switching an elective choice, placement concerns, etc.) should be sent to me by Dec. 8.
You are welcome to contact me at the school anytime to discuss a situation. Email is easier than phone in
case I am with a student or outside of my office. You may also use this counselor referral form as a streamlined method to request me to meet with a student.

Music News
Wea Ridge Middle School will be hosting our annual Veteran’s Day program this year on Friday, No-vember 10th at 9:30am in the Wea Ridge Middle School Main Gym. You and your family are invited to join us for this program. Also, if you have any friends or family members who have served in the past or are currently serving in our armed forces, please invite them to join us as well! There will be a reception following the program for all of our veterans as well as the students by whom they were invited. Please be sure to arrive promptly so that we can begin our program right at 9:30.
All choir and band students singing and playing in the Veteran’s Day program should come to school that morning wearing their concert attire. Details about concert attire can be found in the band and choir handbooks. If you have any questions about appropriate concert attire, please contact Mrs. Green, Miss Woodard, or Mr. Burnette. If students bring a change of clothing, they will have an opportunity to change out of their concert attire after the program.
E-Flyers
TSC supports "green" efforts and as such to help ensure students receive information about com-
munity services or events, flyers from non-profit outside organizations are posted online in a sec-
tion called E-flyers. All E-Flyers can be accessed from any TSC School website:
www.tscschools.com, by clicking the 'students' or 'parents' link in the upper right hand corner of
the webpage. E-Flyers will be posted on the 15th and 30th of the month so be sure to check reg-
ularly for newly posted information. If your qualifying organization is interested in posting an E-
Flyer, go to www.tscschools.com E-flyers section to submit the information.
Please make time to sign up through the TSC webpage for the TSC's emergency notification sys-tem. Upon doing this, you may elect to receive notifications from Wea Ridge Middle and the TSC. Note that Pinwheel is no longer being used by the TSC for notification purposes. Through the web page and the notification system, the TSC sends alert information, such as weather delays and cancellations of school.

Riley Walk Wrap Up 2017
Huskies Helping Others!
The Wea Ridge Annual Riley Children’s Hospital Walk-A-Thon was held on
Thursday, October 5th. Students set a goal of raising $3000, and we surpassed
that goal raising $3,362!!! Not only were Wea Ridge students supporting their
community, but they also listened to B102.9’s DJ “Joe” broadcasting LIVE
from our event!! Due to uncooperative weather, the walk was held inside for
the first time. Students displayed their maroon and black to show unity in our
support of Riley Kids.
Wea Ridge students have now raised over $27,000 in support of Riley Hospital
over the past 9 years from our annual walk. It truly amazing how many Wea
Ridge students and staff members hold Riley Hospital “near and dear” to their
hearts due to having used their services or family needing care from Ri-
ley. This year, the Lafayette Eagles 347 donated $100 to help us achieve our
fundraising goal. Stidham United Methodist Church donated $50 as well to support our walk. We appreciate the continued support we
have received from the Eagles for several years!
We would like to thank all of our students, staff, and administration for their generous support of our walk. Thanks to the Lafayette Eagles
347, Mr. Kurt Williams, B102.9 and Joe McCay for their continued support to help Huskies help others!
