What are Wearables? Wearables are technology devices that are worn on various clothing. Some and most wearables now are for health and fitness purposes to track related information. Others such as Kiwi Wearables include motion sensors and the ability to control or transfer information from smartphones.

Start Ups Kiwi Wearables Kiwi Wearables is a start up company that consists of six members. This company focuses on motion recognition simplified into wearables.

Kiwi’s purpose is to create wearable technology making people live happier and healthier. Kiwi Wearables, although at first glance may have seen similar to the production of the Nike fuel band, Kiwi Wearables brought a refreshing aspect to their product. Kiwi Wearbles created a tool allowing users to control their smartphone with motion, with their Android Wear app.

Muse Muse is a headband that senses your brain fitness. This product uses calibrated sensors including 2 on the forehead, 2 behind the ears and 3 that are used to measure the activity of our brain. This device is simple to use, like

many products, this product connects to an app through mobile devices through Bluetooth, and then users are ready to exercise their brain. This product is said to improve our brains by:

• Motivating our brains to change • Improves stress levels

• Improves on emotional stability

• Specifically designed to help you make the habit of using this for mental exercise, much like meditation

Events Toronto Wearable meetups Toronto Wearable meetups is a lecture that is usually held once a month that contains guest speakers who speak about various types of wearables from fashion wearables to wearable technology. This event is put together by OCAD University’s Social Body lab containing their Director Kate Hartman along with 19 other members, all of which specialize in various areas such as Integrated Media, Material art, design, Wearable’s, industry design, jewelry making, electrical engineering, etc.

A guest speaker who stood out to me was Robert Tu creator of MeU. MeU is a wearable that uses LED’s to display various patterns and such on pieces of clothing including bags. With this little panel you are able to customize your displayed design using your smart phone or by programming it yourself to a

custom design. This product also benefits the safety of runners and cyclists. The possibilities of this product are endless.

Robert Tu started of at the University of Waterloo and up held a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. He was led to IBM in information technology sales where he then decided to go back to school for design (his passion) at OCAD University. After he graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of design he then created the MeU.

We Are Wearables We are the wearables are a community organized by Tom Emrich and Paula Kwan, that brings tech communities together for events that help the community learn about wearable technology. This community features tech demos, presentation and a place to get connected with other people who have a fascination for wearables as well.

Tom Emrich was recently listed as the 3rd most influenced person in wearable technology. He earned his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Waterloo in English Literature in 2000 and up till 2014 he was been continuing to study at OCAD University about

Wearable Media. He had various jobs in mobile marketing that landed him into a Co-Producer on WEST: Wearable Entertainment and sports Toronto in 2014. Which was also the same year he founded We Are Wearables.

Highlights: - Founded the largest Wearable Tech community in North America - Co-produced the 1st Wearable Tech conference in Canada (WEST) - One of the first Google Glass Explorers in Canada - Created 2 first-of-their-kind apps for Glass (Glass Eats & Stay Glassy, TTC) - Quoted in Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, The Financial Post & The New York Times - Regular media appearances on CP24 Breakfast, Global News,

Paula Kwan Paula Kwan became the co-Organizer of we are the wearables in 2014. She earned her Bachelors of Art at Wilfrid Laurier University in Psychology and Sociology. The way she compliments the team We are the Wearables is her passion for building great client relationship.

FITC (Future. Innovation. Technology. Creativity.) Wearables FITC Wearables is a company that produces events that focus on design and technology. These events consist of guest speakers who are considered experts that present and share their knowledge. This company sometimes has bigger events that give the attendees a choice of which presentation they would like to attend that is tailored to a specified audience. A platform is also available for meeting and interacting with other people of the same interest.

Shawn Pucknell who studied Digital Media founded this company. In 1996 he became a

Flash developer, in 2001 he started a Toronto Flash user group FlashinTO. He has also taught at OCAD University and the international Academy of Design. Along with Mr. Pucknell the team consist of 7 other members.

An upcoming event this April is being help to celebrate the existence of design, web developing, media, and creative technologies. This huge event that has been going on for 14 years will include over 75 guest speakers. Topics are displayed underneath.

Where are wearables taught? OCAD University provides GDES courses for graduates and continuing studies.

Interaccess InterAcess is a public gallery that educates attendees along with studios used for creative use using new media art and electronic arts. They provide may forums to the public for many practices such as: • Exhibitions and events (live

music and performance) • Hands-on workshops (intro to

advanced) • Professional development and

teacher training • Free weekly drop-in Open

Studio • Artist talks and panel

discussions

• Documentation through video and publication

• Partnerships and special projects

• Annual support for the InterAccess Media Arts Award through OCAD University

Hackerspaces is a community where people with an interest in technology experiment with technology, work on projects among others and learn and help one another. They also provide a Wiki Page for stories that happened within their community can be shared as well as a space for questions. Kids Learning Code is a company that hosts workshops, camps, and after school programs to teach kids coding, This is open to kids between 6 and 17 years old.
