Christ, did we just make a Joni Mitchell reference? Well, there goes our street-cred. Let’s just pretend that didn’t happen, yes? Good. Anyway, a word on last night’s game; It’s never easy to swallow a loss to Scum. Though let’s be honest here, it’s pretty much a tie. Most will point to another blown two-goal, 3rd period lead. That’s not acceptable, but try to remember what the Hawks came up against last night. Not only was it the league’s most talented team, but they had to combat goals off a crazy bounce that eluded Huet, the only bad line change of the night, and Hossa getting away with hold- ing VerStud in his own zone leading to the turnover they scored off of. That’s a moun- tain. And for a great majority of the game, the Hawks dealt with it. Dealt with it real well. In fact, they kicked Scum’s ass up-and-down the ice like an NFL lineman does with his girlfriend. What’s so infuriating about Scum is that they don’t miss on any chance they get. A soft goal, which the first one was, a bad bounce, a bad change, and a missed call, and you’re looking at four goals against. Sucks, but sometimes, what can you do? It doesn’t take an expert to tell you that if the Hawks put out that kind of effort night after night, the playoffs won’t be much of a struggle at all. Also, when you play Anaheim and Scum back- to-back, you’ll take your three of four points and be content. Or at least we’ll try to. If we hadn’t locked ourselves in last night after the game to finish tonight’s issue, we very well may have gone out and practiced our shank- ing skills on the first dickrag from Farmington Hills we could find. Such is how losses to those peckerheads make us feel. Still, the Hawks had glittering per- formances from so many last night. Cap- tain Marvel was, well, just that. Keith was a force. 51 Phantom must’ve had heartburn or something, he was hitting everyone (oh that’s right, Scum’s full of pussies who you can hit without retribution. So are the Hawks, but still...). Ladd, Bolland, and Havlat were ev- erywhere. Even Byfuglien was showing signs of life. These line changes that Coach Q put together before the Anaheim game gives the Hawks more balance, and we hope he sticks with them for a little while longer. Phoenix Rising, All The Way To Southern Ontario So that brings us to tonight, where the Hawks will face a team that also played last night. The Coyotes lost to St. Louis 4-3 in a game where they didn’t appear to put forth much of an effort until midway through the 2nd. Before the season, the Coyotes were mentioned in all the same sentences that the Oilers and Hawks were that stated these were young, exciting teams to watch. It hasn’t quite worked that way yet. The ‘Yotes are right at .500, which in Gary Bettman’s Wacky Numbers Emporium does not mean you’re av- erage. You may say they’re only three points behind the Hawks, but they’ve played two more games. Two wins and that gap is seven, and that’s large in today’s game. However, it’s to be expected that Phoenix will get better as the season goes along. They were young at the end of last season, and they’ve only gotten more so this season. Along with Mueller and Hanzal do- ing the NHL spin for the second time, Mikkel Boedker and Kyle Turris are on their first full go-around. So are Keith Yandle and Viktor Tikhonov. The more these guys grow, the far- ther Phoenix will progress. Not making the players’ or Head Coach Wayne Gretzky’s job any easier is that they will have to deal with distractions other young teams won’t. They’ll be hearing stories of the franchise’s future at every turn. There’s more on that inside, but it’s not a pretty situ- ation. It’s hard enough learning to play in the NHL, but having to do so wondering whether you’ll be calling the same place home the next year or the one after that makes it doubly tough. It’s hard to pinpoint anything that stands out about the ‘Yotes. They’re in the middle of the pack in almost every category, except for face-offs, which they’re abysmal at. There’s no one in the Top 20 in goals or scor- ing. Their goalies have been all right, though Bryzgalov has been maddeningly on-and-off. He played last night, so we’ll get a look at Mi- kael Tellqvist tonight. He’s been pretty good, but got yanked vs. the Leafs on Thursday. More of that, please. Beep-Beep This is the same team the Hawks raced by for their first win this year, and the one they beat in a shootout without ever getting going. Phoenix plays open and fast, which is exactly what the Hawks like. They have a few d-men who lock down their own zone about as well as a crooked prison guard. Ed Jovanovski has been a pylon in a wind- storm this year. The ‘Yotes are even worse than the Hawks on the road at 4-8-1. -If You Want Blood, YOU GOT IT!: First off, an apology to those who received a blood-stained copy of our program from me on Wednesday night. I opened a paper cut at some point during the night, but due to the cold A) I could not feel it and B) my skin had dried out so it wouldn’t close the wound. So, on a paper cut scale, the thing gushed like a fucking mis-carriage. But you all have my DNA for any crime I might commit (and no, crimes against the English language contained within these pages don’t count, funny guy). Though it is pretty hockey to bleed on your program, isn’t it?

-We Don’t Want You: One of the worst things about this whole Sean Avery deal is that it causes people who don’t know anything about hockey to talk about hockey. It’s usually in the most demeaning tone as well. For some reason, when you announce to people that you’re a hockey fan, those who aren’t like to tell you that you shouldn’t be because no one cares about it. Boers and Bernstein on The Score are two of the most prominent peddlers of this thought. Why would I give a drunken fat fuck what the general populace thinks of something I like? In fact, when the masses catch on to something is when it tends to start to blow. Look at Smashing Pumpkins or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. What Bernstein and his like don’t realize is that we hockey

fans would prefer that he and they don’t like it. I don’t need mass approval for me to enjoy the sport. In fact, the cult aspect of it is one of the things I enjoy most. I don’t have to deal with whatever pieces of horse feces on the Worldwide Leader of Sports coming

up with some catch-phrase to describe a Kane goal. I don’t have to listen to every frat-boy putting down his 11th Keystone Lite to spout some loud, obnoxious, uninformed opinion about hockey, before he goes to date rape his co-worker. I only occasionally have to read some blowhard columnist spouting his selfish manifesto about what moves the GM should make even though he hasn’t been in the arena in four years (though we all have to put up with Rozner occasional-ly, which is time you’ll never get back.) We have the pleasure that whenever we run into another fan, we’re most likely running into another passionate fan. We have a camaraderie and an understanding only soccer

fans get. People like Boers and Bernstein need hockey to be popular to justify talking about it. Or, more accurately, they need it to not be popular to justify not talking about it. I, and my fellow Hawks and hockey fans, do not. We’ll continue to follow our team and drink our beer and wear our jerseys whether we’re the only 20k watching the sport or not. And we’ll do just fine without you, Mr Bernstein. Thank you very much.

Wayne Gretzky-Head Coach, Coyotes: Let’s see: A young team with big expectations before the season. Tons of young talent. A less than stellar beginning to the season. Coached by a legendary player. Where have we seen this before? You

have to believe that The Great One would be a whole lot harder to fire than Savvy was, though, at least partly because Gretz is still a part owner of the Coyotes. It’s been a sports philosophy that great players don’t make great coaches because they can’t relate to players less talented than they were. Well, that’s every player in Gretzky’s case. You have to wonder, at least a little, if this neophyte-filled Coyotes team isn’t going to need and experienced hand soon. If so, that’ll be awkward for everyone.

Or maybe Hamilton Coyotes? Toronto Coyotes? Despite what the Yotes fans say in “Know Thy Enemy”, the Coyotes are in serious trouble. Phoenix is expected to lose $25-$30 million this year, and it won’t be the first time. The problem is their owner Jerry Moyes owns one of the larger trucking corp.’s in the US, Swift., and they’ve been skull-fucked by the dipping economy and high oil prices. It’s estimated that Swift’s liabilities outweight its assets by $1.5 billion. We know fuck-all about economics, but even we know that’s bad. Yotes fans point to the penalties in the lease at Jobing.com Arena for mov-ing out of there, but those don’t come into play if the team declares bankruptcy. Which just might happen.

Klee’s been a nice surprise, leading the team in +

/-/60. Though he’s not exactly a young, up-and-com

ing prospect, is he?

What To Watch For: The Coyotes are a nastier bunch then you might think. Carcillo, Fedoruk, Sauer and even Captain Doan never shy from the pugilistic responsibilities. They were built to stop getting beat up by the Stars and Ducks, but it doesn’t appear to be working so well. This is the two team’s third meeting, and there may still be some hard feelings

from the hit on Kane in the desert, though it was clean. We might get one passionate discussion.

Jovo-Cop

Spotlight

We honestly thought about putting Anquan Boldin here, because we couldn’t think of a Phoenix athlete who we care about other than him, (Jerry Angelo, GET HIM!!!) but we landed on Ed Jovanovski. Remember during the Florida Panthers Finals run and we all thought Jovo was going to define the defensemen position for the next decade? If Judge Smails were here, he’d say, “Well, we’re waiting!” It never happened. We thought when Jo-vanovski got traded to Vancouver, which was quite the team at the time, that’s when he’d take off. Nope. In fact, Easy Ed has managed just two seasons positive +/- out of his 13 in the league. He has managed three 40-point seasons from the blue line, but that’s about it. Some of you will point to his five All-Star appearances but two of those are a result of Phoenix having to send somebody. The other three are probably the effect of the glow of his promise. It’s a shame, someone with his size and mobility--or the mobility he once had--should have at least one Norris to his name.

KNOW THY ENEMY

Hawks-Yotes: the Last 4

Nov. 18th, 2008: Hawks 3, Yotes 2 (SO)Hawks score two early goals, then slip into a coma for the next 2.5 periods. VerStud and Sharp scratch for the Hawks during play. Toews and Sharp score in the skills competition. Another win in 2nd gear.

Oct. 15th, 2008: Yotes 1, Hawks 4A win so good it cost Savard his job. This was his last game, and it saw the ‘Yotes take the lead, Havlat score a wonder-goal and the Hawks blitz Phoenix from there on out. Hawks 1st win of season.

Feb. 27th, 2008: Yotes 0, Hawks 1Patrick Lalime stops all 32 Phoenix shots, and Jason Williams scores only goal in a game where the only thing we remember happening is Martin Havlat’s shoulder leaves Martin Havlat’s body and is seen drinking at The Billy Goat.

Jan. 19th, 2008: Hawks 2, Yotes 1 (SO)Do these two ever play an entertaining game? An-other 3 hours we won’t get back as Lalime stones Phoenix in skills competition. Rene Bourque hilari-ously tries to win game in OT on a penalty shot. No

prizes for guessing how that worked out.

Tonight, Monique Reaux of Coyotes Hip Check (www.coyoteshipcheck.com, and have we had a sexier name here than Monique Reaux?) and Travis from Five For Howling (www.fiveforhowling.com) cure our inquisitiveness about the ‘Yotes.Q: There were big expectations in the desert this season, which haven’t been met yet. What’s gone wrong?Monique: There are still big expectations in the desert. Nothing has gone wrong. We’re young as hell and experiencing the usual burps and farts a young team will have. The kids are growing up fast and furious. We’re a game over .500, we’re bouncing around that marker like a pinball on crack, but given the fact that Ed Jo-vanovski is having the slowest start of his career (after a career high 51 points last season that we were depending on him coming close to again) and considering we traded away a 3rd of our blue line and really expected to totally suck on defense, we’re doin just fine. We’ve seen Crosby, Ovie,Iginla, Nash and a host of other superstars and most of the time we have made those big names inconsequential, while beginning to establish some offensive names of our own. Some of those Coyotes will be future names to be reckoned with, players like Boedker, Lisin and Hanzal and future defensive powerhouses in players like Yandle and Michalek. People fail to take into account that rebuilds take time. We rarely stunk enough to get any of the top draft picks. Previous coaches and GMs didn’t seem to put too much stake in drafting well (preferring to buy/trade for talent). This is actually only our 2nd year of a true rebuild.Q: Some of your off-season moves were obviously meant to get tougher. Has that helped or cost you so far?Travis: We got a little tougher, but we really only added Fedoruk and McGrat-ton. Fedoruk has done alright picking up the checking game and scoring the occasional goal but hasn’t mixed it up all that much. McGratton has hardly seen the ice. He’s been one of the healthy scratches all but a few times this year and even when he’s not he only gets maybe 6 minutes of ice time. I think the only way that “getting tougher” hurt us was that when they brought those two guys in, the idea was that Daniel Carcillo wouldn’t or shouldn’t fight anymore. That was stupid. He’s one of those players that has to have that as a part of his game to get him going. They’ve since let him off that leash and he’s going back to the player he was that got the big hits, big fights and got the team going.Q: Bryzgalov has been inconsistent this season. Are you worried that sign-ing a long-term deal will eventually turn out to affect his performance?Travis: I don’t think the deal itself is the problem. He’s a very intense goalie, and like most goalies, has a few loose screws. He’s let some of the mistakes and bad luck get to him and he just can’t seem to shake it all off. He had a solid 3rd period in relief of Tellqvist against the Leafs and helped get the W in what was a very sloppy game. Hopefully you won’t even be seeing him in goal tonight, though. The one good thing that hopefully came out of this is that the coaching staff saw that Telly is a capable back up and that they shouldn’t be afraid to give him part of a back to back set. If so, Bryz should get the Blues and Telly the Hawks since Bryz hasn’t had much luck against you guys.

Q: We here in Chicago had a playing legend as coach, but moved him out for a more experienced hand when things weren’t going as well as we hoped. Is there any thought of the same maneuver in Phoenix?Monique: Sure, there are plenty of people calling for Wayne’s head. Pretty much every time the team slumps or changes the roster/lines they do. The guy is finally in charge of the team. Last year when we dumped all the dead wood like JR and some other veterans who didn’t want to learn or play a system that requires work-ing every single shift. TGO relates to the younger players very well. He now has a really good mix of vets/rookies who get it. Speed, effort, heart and playing for the team gets us wins. We don’t have any players that are playing for themselves anymore and they are all learning (team and coach) together. It’s a pretty sweet ride, watching him grow as a coach and really entertaining too.Q: Kyle Turris obviously has huge potential, and he’d better with his draft position. What are your views on him so far?Travis: Turris definitely has miles and miles of potential. However, he’s still adjusting to the NHL game and is severely undersized. He’s only 180 pounds, and I’d say that’s with full pads, skates, eating a double serving of chicken parm and then doing a bag skate for a few hours and soaking those pads. He’s at least learned how to take hits and not get left on the ice. He can’t check anyone yet though. He literally has to leave his feet in order for his hits to faze most guys. He does make up for that a bit with his stick work though. He’s very good at pestering guys with his speed and by poking at the puck. If he can put on a few pounds over the season and over this next offseason he’ll just get better. I also think he’s in a good spot to be learning the game. Gretzky was fast and smallish too and tried to avoid hits when possible. Hopefully he can pass some of that on to him. Off of that question though, the rookie to really be looking at on our team is this year’s top pick for the Coyotes, Mikkel Boedker. He’s been really strong on the puck and will simply steal it away from the opposition with little effort. He hasn’t got a ton of points, but is in the top ten for rookies and leads all rookie forwards in TOI per game, or at least he did as of this writing.Q: The Coyotes are always one of the first franchises mentioned as being in trouble. What will happen? Monique: The Yotes aren’t going anywhere. Don’t listen to the mainstream press (1/2 of them have their heads so far up their asses they wouldn’t be able to decipher our lease much less recognize that no one in their right mind would pay to break that puppy). What is going to happen is that Don Maloney and Wayne Gretzky are going to continue to grow the Coyotes into a cup contender and that the Yotes will be deep in the post season within the next 3 years. Obviously, I am prejudiced. I am a season ticket holder and hang out with a group of about 30 - 40 Yote fiends called the Patio 6 Posse. We tailgate and have away game viewing parties at local bars. There are pockets of fans like us throughout the arena. The number of die hard hockey maniacs who have season tickets has definitely grown this season as the influx of young talent has made itself known. Phoenix has a LOT of transplants, we’re converting them away from their old allegiances with our heart and soul team of underdogs.

Page 13: We’re the front-runner for Obama’s Secretary of Bad …assets.sbnation.com/assets/52288/12-7_vs._Phoenix.pdf-If You Want Blood, YOU GOT IT!: First off, an apology to those who

I take my hockey pretty seriously. I’m prone to vitriolic outbursts when I hear people say “No one watches hockey” or “I only like watching the fights”. I enforce Wait-For-A-Whistle in my own home, even when hockey isn’t even on. I drive nearly 40 miles each way for men’s league games that start at 10:30 at night when I have to be functional in a meeting at 7:00AM the following morning. So following the 2005-2006 season, when the Blackhawks cut ties with Pat Foley, their announcer for as long as I had been alive at the time, I was pretty upset. To that point, the list of atrocities committed by the Blackhawks on their fans, some of which I lived through, some of which predated me, was extensive. To list them now in this space would be tantamount to burning down the glue fac-tory that Barbaro was sent to, so I’ll spare you. But the fact remains that the only reason I had left to watch/listen to Hawks games was gone, and I was livid. I had had enough. Taking a cue from what I had heard a fed up Kansas City Royals fan had done, I decided to put my hockey allegiance up for sale to the high-est bidder on eBay. It killed me to do it, but I was at my wits’ end. I had determined that the winner of the auction would receive a sworn affidavit of my fandom and a photo of me in the new team’s sweater. After all, if they were going to be my new team, I was going to need one. So the week long auction started, and the offers rolled in, and the winning bid ended up being $50 from the pro-prietor of a sports memorabilia shop in the south suburbs who shall remain nameless. I received my payment, and he received his photo of me and the affidavit, made air-tight by a friend of mine who was in law school at the time, and even bore the signature of a witness. The team I was made a fan of, you ask? The Colorado Avalanche. So I was an Avalanche fan. I wasn’t entirely thrilled with it, but a few of my favorite players had once donned the…ummm…snowy A(?), such as Ray Bourque and Chris Drury. To this day, I still consider seeing Joe Sakic hand The Cup directly to Bourque and allowing him to hoist it first as one of the most incredible sporting moments I’ve ever seen. And I gave it an honest effort. I really did. I bought the Center Ice package to get the games. I only went to the United Center when the Avs were in town. I even had my parents pick up a vintage Forsberg Nordiques sweater when they were in Denver on

vacation. All while still keeping a watchful eye, if at a distance, on the Hawks. Then everything changed. Last call finally came for Old Man Wirtz, and the changes started coming. Again, to list them would just be adding to the massive amounts of knob polishing that Rocky and McDonough have already received. But the important thing was that the on-ice product was improving and exciting, and I could finally start forking over my hard earned money to see NHL hockey in this town in good conscience. So I started attending games more frequently, attending them with my good friend, a Mr. Adam Tatro. It was like intention-ally going to the bars where you know your ex-girlfriend is hanging out. Yeah, even the sight of her pisses you off, but damned if you

know any know any better. And I found myself buying back in. So I agreed to meet Tatro for the game after Christmas against the Predators last year. After an interminable ride on the #50 Damen bus all the way down from Lawrence, I met him at his vehicle, where he claimed he had a Christmas present for me. A Patrick Sharp sweater, com-plete with alternate “A”. “I bought you back asshole. You’re a Hawks fan again.”Unbeknownst to me, he had gone to the afore-mentioned memorabilia dealer, and bought my fandom off of him, and provide me with a

sweater, as was the original stipulation of my sale of myself. (It was a Patrick Sharp sweater due to my well documented man-crush on him dating back to the 2005 Calder Cup finals, but that’s a story for another time). So it’s going on a year now since my return to the fold, and it’s been excellent, especially with things coming full circle with the return of Pat Foley to the booth. Sure, I get infuriated with how fucking soft the Hawks are in their own zone, and I think Dale Tallon has the potential to set the franchise back years should he continue to screw the pooch with the salary cap situation. But by and large, it’s been a positive experience, and I’m glad to be back. So call me a sell out if you will, but I don’t care. As far as I’m concerned, it was a cry for help.
