Weathering means the process of breaking down rocks and other substances at Earth’s surface.
![Page 4: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Erosion means the movement of rock particles by wind, water, ice, or gravity.
![Page 5: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Two Types OF Weathering:Mechanical (Physical) Weathering
is When rock is physically broken into
smaller pieces (but still have the same chemical composition).
Chemical weathering is Breaking down rocks through chemical changes.
![Page 6: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
There are 5 Types of Mechanical Weathering Freezing and Thawing Release of Pressure Growth of Plants Actions of Animals Abrasion
![Page 7: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Freezing and thawing of water.
(Ice Wedging)- Water seeps into cracks in rocks and then freezes when the temperature drops. It expands when it freezes and acts like a wedge.
![Page 8: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Release of pressure 1. Erosion carries away rocks from the top of a mountain. This reduces pressure on the rocks below and causes the outside rocks to crack and flake off like layers of an onion.
![Page 9: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Plant action- 1. Plant roots grow in
cracks of rocks and pry rocks apart.
![Page 10: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Actions of Animals Animals burrow in the ground and break apart
rocks.
![Page 11: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Abrasion- rubbing by other rocks.
Sand and other rock particles carried by wind, water, ice, or gravity wear away rocks.

Abrasion

Water Oxygen (Rust) CO2 Living Organisms Acid Rain
Types of Chemical Weathering
![Page 14: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Water Minerals are dissolved in water. ex.: Halite, calcite
![Page 15: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Oxidation- Oxygen combines with water to make rust.ex.: rusty bicycle
![Page 16: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
CO2 Carbon dioxide dissolves in rainwater to make
carbonic acid (weathers marble and limestone).
![Page 17: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Living Organisms
Plant roots produce weak acids that dissolve rocks. Lichens grow on rocks and make weak acids.
![Page 18: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Acid Rain:Burning fossil fuels causes sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen to mix with water vapor in clouds to make acid rain.
![Page 19: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Rates of Weathering will depend on:
Surface area exposed - More surface exposed, the faster the weathering will occur.
![Page 20: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
A full, solid block has the least surface area.
The interior is safe from exposure.
A smashed piece has greatest surface area exposed. The interior can now be attacked.

Type of Rock - some rocks and minerals are more resistant than
others. – ex.:Quartz is resistant to chemical and
physical weathering. Slate tombstones weather slower than marble tombstones.
Rates of Weathering will depend on:
![Page 22: Weathering and Erosion](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081514/56816521550346895dd7a0b3/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Climate:Cold and/or dry climates favor physical weathering. Warm and wet climates favor chemical weathering.
Rates of Weathering will depend on:

Soil - The product of weathering Soil- rocks, minerals (mainly sand and
clay), and organic matter Soil forms as rock is broken down by
weathering and mixes with other materials on the surface.
Soil forms layers of different characteristics called horizons.
