Social Bookmarking
According to Wikipedia:• Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to share, organize,
search, and manage bookmarks of web resources. Unlike file sharing, the resources themselves aren't shared, merely bookmarks that reference them.
• Descriptions may be added to these bookmarks in the form of metadata, so that other users may understand the content of the resource without first needing to download it for themselves. Such descriptions may be free text comments, or tags that collectively or collaboratively become a folksonomy. Folksonomy is also called social tagging, "the process by which many users add metadata in the form of keywords to shared content".

Implications for Librarians, Researchers and Learners• Tagging (cataloguing ) information resources with keywords has
the potential to change the way we store and find information• Information retrieval – Social bookmarking application enable content
to be found based on a set of user-specified criteria• Social Bookmarking simplifies the distribution of reference list;
bibliographies, articles; videos, book reviews, news and other resources among academics, researchers and students
• Can be used as Current Awareness and Selective Dissemination of information tool (articles, news; ToC, websites; blog posts, etc)
• Databases with Social Bookmarking applications: EbscoHost, RSC, IoP, ScienceDirect- 2Collab, AccessScience, etc.
Getting started with Social Bookmarking
• Decide on the purpose of the Bookmarking site
• Who is your intended audience
• Benchmark with other libraries
• Select a Social Bookmarking site
• Create an account (use generalised e-mail / password)
Recommended sites to start:• Del.icio.us.com• Google Bookmarks• Digg, etc.
Advantages:• Easy to find new and older Information (tags)• Keep users informed on the latest in the Sciences, Library, IT fields,
etc.• Search per tagg• Enable you to advertise your own links (blogs, websites, etc.) • Easy and quick to tag articles, news, websites, etc. • Saves from an e-mail overload• Good Information Retrieval toolSuggestions: • Delicious is the choice of many libraries• When creating an account for a bookmarking site, make use of the
generalised e-mail of your institution. • Create a more subject specific service and do not cover too many
topics.
