3D Wellbore Rendering
• Geology & Reservoir Modeling
• Drilling Target & Anti-collision
• Production Engineering
How can we bring high quality,
interactive wellbore modeling
to production engineers?
Or even field personnel?

Mobile Apps vs. Desktop vs. Webpages
• Everyone knows how to view web pages
• Can target numerous platforms/devices
• Webpages can look more or less the
same across different devices
http://xkcd.com/1367/
But we can’t do advanced 3D
graphics in webpages…

The Modern Web Browser
• Increasingly standards based
• Increased performance
• Both desktop & mobile
• Native 3D support
– No plugins, just the browser

Just Technical Semantics What use is all of this?
Why is it so difficult to see a high
resolution, interactive wellbore?
Analogy:

The problem with statically rendering wellbores
• Long & Slender
– Lose detail
– Lose frame of reference
• Unequal dimensional scaling
– Straight wells appear deviated
• Squished
• Distorted

How to make a straight well look crooked straight
But we can
zoom in!
• Equal dimensions (X=Y=Z)
• Not nearly as bad as
it looked before
• But we can’t really see
any of the details…

High Resolution Survey Data

11
Dog-Leg Severity (DLS)
• Easily see the high DLS sections
on the wellbore
• Color coded
– Red = High DLS
• Perspective on what
the DLS regions
actually look like

Rod-on-Tubing Wear
• Color coded overlay (Similar to DLS coloring)
• Conventional wear color bands are not ideal
– Correct to green-red
• Still no inherent notion of
“As Run” vs. “As Pulled”
• Can be added to determine
the rod wear incurred from
the current run

Collaboration
• How to ensure everyone is looking
at the same view?
• Synchronous – Screen Sharing
– Complex, High Bandwidth, not suitable
for spotty connections. Software/support
• Asynchronous – Email
– Convenient, but not interactive
– Simple & Ubiquitous
• Distributed view state synchronization
– Live/real-time or snapshot-able

Device Support
• Can I use advanced 3D graphics – Does my
browser/device support WebGL? – Desktop – IE 11, Chrome, Firefox
– Mobile – iOS 8+, Android (Mixed, but generally Chrome works or can be enabled)
• If your PC is at least 5 years old, or if your mobile device
is at least 2-3 years old, there’s a good possibility it’ll work
– May need the latest OS/browser updates
– Anything currently on the market should work
• Otherwise, fallbacks to slower rendering engine
– Still usable, but not as responsive

Conclusion
• Useful & convenient – Easy to access
– Laptops & Most cellphones
• Better analyze downhole equipment
– Placement and performance
• Not quite a commercial product yet (perpetual beta)
– Feedback would be appreciated
– http://deviationsurvey.com/demo
• Drawbacks – Subject to survey data accuracies
– Potentially misleading if inputted data is wrong
– Corporate firewall issues (accessibility)
