During the weeks between Passover and Shavuot, it is customary to study Pirke Avot. The text primarily focuses on the behavior of the individual, recommending ways to interact with other individuals, which positive characteristics to nurture and how to engage in the community. We reflect on these

aspects of life in preparation for Shavuot, the holiday that commemorates the giving of the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai, in order to receive the Torah with hearts and minds directed toward moral and ethical behavior. So let’s spend a little time studying Pirke Avot.

One of my favorite verses is chapter 2, verse 5, which reads:

Hillel said: Do not keep aloof from the community; be not sure of yourself until the day of your death; do not judge your fellow until you have been in his/her position; do not say anything which cannot be understood at once, in the hope that it will ultimately be understood; and do not say: “when I have leisure I will study,” for you may never have leisure.

He covers a broad range of things to consider about who we are and the way we live. What is Hillel’s wisdom?

Do not keep aloof of the community. Do not focus on just you, or just your family. Ensure that the community interests are your interests, too. It is not just good for others, you will benefit from a healthy community as well.

Be not sure of yourself until the day of your death. Be humble. Be confident, and feel good about yourself, but keep your ego in check. Remember that there are always ways in which you can grow and change.

Do not judge your fellow until you have been in his/her position. Be compassionate. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Listen to what others have to share and be open to their perspectives.

Do not say anything which cannot be understood at once, in the hope that it will ultimately be understood. Be honest and direct. Do not manipulate people by using your words or your power in round about ways.

Do not say, when I have leisure I will study, for you may never have leisure. Do not put things off, neither your responsibilities nor what is most important to you. What is significant now, as much as possible, should be addressed now.

This year, Shavuot begins on June 11th. Take some time to reflect on this teaching from Hillel as we lead up to the holiday. And then, keep these teachings with you throughout the summer as we prepare for the High Holy Days in the fall. May our reflection and learning enable us to lead intentional, moral and meaningful lives.

~ Rabbi Jacqueline Mates-Muchin

Peter Schrag, When Europe Was a Prison CampWednesday, June 22, 7:30pm in the Albers Chapel

In a compelling approach to storytelling, When Europe Was a Prison Camp weaves together two accounts of a family’s eventual escape from Occupied Europe. One, a memoir written by the father in 1941; the other, begun by the son in the 1980s, fills in the story of himself and his mother, supplemented by historical

research. The result is both personal and provocative, involving as it does issues of history and memory, fiction and “truth,” courage and resignation.

This is not a “Holocaust memoir.” The Schrags were Jews and Otto was interned under execrable conditions in southern France. But Otto, with the help of his heroic wife, escaped the camp before the start of massive transfers of prisoners “to the East,” and Peter and his mother escaped from Belgium before the Jews were rounded up and sent to Auschwitz. Yet the danger and suffering, the comradeship and betrayal, the naïve hopes and cynical despair of those in prison and those in peril are everywhere in evidence.

This event is Free and open to the public. Sponsored by Temple Sinai’s Fine Arts Committee for Culture and Community.

WTS HOSTS MEMOIR WRITING WORKSHOPLeslie Rupley, memoirist and author of the historical fiction novel Beyond the Silk Mills and her forthcoming book, My Fifties Childhood, An Interactive Memoir, held a series of three workshops which inspired a number of men and women attendees to revisit and write recollections of their growing-up years. Leslie provided an approach and techniques to stimulate our memories and launch us into the process of writing our very own “no big deal memoir”. Oral stories were shared and written segments were reviewed and critiqued by Leslie and the group. Interest in continuing the memoir writing process after the end of the workshop was high.

Every one of us has the power to have a profound impact on our community. When we combine our efforts, we magnify that impact a thousand fold. Working together, we can do amazing things, like ensuring the sustainability of our congregation for our families today and for future generations.

As of May 11, we have raised $2.8 million towards our overall goal of $4 million, leaving us with a little over $1.2 million to go. Together, we can do this. But your participation is essential. Every gift brings us closer to our shared goal.

“Individually we are one drop, but together, we are an ocean.”

Say Yes to sustainability. Say Yes to our future. Say Yes to Yesod.

To learn more about Yesod, contact Community Campaign Chair, Debra Schoenberg at [email protected].

Our team of volunteers are working hard to help us achieve our fundraising goal. Please welcome your fellow congregants when they call or write to enlist your support in this very

important campaign.

Thank you to our generous donors who have already contributed to the campaign.

LEGACY CIRCLE and DONOR PROFILE

We are: Three generations of Morrisons: Barbara and Bob; Linsey and Brett, Rachel, Joshua and Anya.

We joined Temple Sinai in: 1976 (Barbara and Bob), 2005 (Linsey and Brett).

Our favorite Temple Sinai moment is:

Other than personal family simchas, those times when our congregants came together to help other congregants in need, whether they knew them or not.

We want our legacy to be: L’dor v’dor, from generation to generation. It is most gratifying that our children are carrying on our tradition of volunteering for Temple Sinai.

We made a legacy gift because: synagogue life has always been important to us. The best way to perpetuate Judaism is through community: learning and praying together, and being there to support one another in happy as well as sad times.

Temple Sinai is: a community of people, which we are very proud to be a part of.

Temple Sinai is a member of Create a Jewish Legacy, a partnership of East Bay agencies, synagogues, and day schools dedicated to securing the Jewish Future through legacy giving. Create a Jewish Legacy is sponsored by The Jewish Federation of the East Bay,

The Jewish Community Foundation, and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.

Welcome Peggy Berger, Our New Administrative Assistant to the Education Department

We are delighted to welcome Peggy Berger to our Education Team at Temple Sinai. Peggy is a recent transplant from Columbus, Ohio, where for 18 years she ran an afterschool/summer camp program at a prestigious independent school, including all of the administrative

responsibilities. She also has a background as an Aikido instructor and a Feldenkrais practitioner. Peggy has a BA in English from Cornell, and an MS in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling from CSU Hayward. She’s originally from New York City. Peggy is eager to be a part of our community. Please introduce yourself when you are at the Temple.

Doing Jewish Over the SummerThere are lots of great ways to “do Jewish” over the summer. The Temple Sinai Family School’s Resource Guide has some great ideas and activities for your family – from local field trips to tikkun olam projects. You can find the Guide on the preschool and religious school pages of our website. Have a fabulous summer!

2016–2017 Religious School Registration: NOW is the TimeRegistration for Fall 2016 is open. You can register for Religious School any time during the summer; sooner is better as it helps with program planning. Registration materials are available on-line. Visit oaklandsinai.org/Religious-School-Registration for instructions. Have questions about our Religious School programs? Contact Sue Bojdak at [email protected] today!
