Web of Knowledge – Releases 2011

• Web of Knowledge V5.2 (March 27, 2011) • Provided as a secondary environment so users

can test the new system

• Included all WoK products (except for the WoS Chemistry Indexes)

• Web of Knowledge V5.3 (July 17, 2011) • Primary environment

• “Roaming” access

• Web of Knowledge V5.4 (October 9, 2011) • Added the Book Citation Index (BKCI)

Page 5: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

Book Citation Index (BKCI)

Adding Book Citation Index to Web of Science shows how books and book chapters are integrated with journals as part of scholarly communication networks

Page 6: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

Book Citation Index (BKCI)• Two new editions in Web of Science

– Book Citation Index– Science (BKCI-S)

– Book Citation Index– Social Sciences & Humanities (BKCI-SSH)

• Selecting scholarly books from 2005 to present

• Series or Standalone publications

• Unique books – 30,085

• Unique chapters – 385,822

• Unique References – 15,728,276

• Current plan is to add 10K books in 2012

– Separate but linked records for Books and Book Chapters

– Book and Book Chapter records will have Times Cited counts

– WoS times cited counts reflect BKCI citations

Page 7: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

Web of Knowledge V5.5 (December 18, 2011)

• Primary objective was to migrate the WoS Chemistry editions to the new WoK Platform and provide updated structural search tool - the Accelrys JDraw java applet

• Index Chemicus (IC)

• Current Chemical Reactions (CCR)

Page 8: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

Index Chemicus (IC)

• Covers new compounds from the top organic chemistry journals

• Approximately 125 journal titles which are scrutinized cover-to-cover for author reports of newly prepared, characterized or isolated organic substances

• Currently the database contains over 3.7 million compounds (1993-Present)

• approximately 440,000 having reported biological activity

• (over 745,000 biological activity entries as individual compounds may have more than one assigned activity).

• Adds over 180,000 new compounds annually

Page 9: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

Current Chemical Reactions (CCR)

• New or improved chemical reactions and synthetic methods

• 130 core journal titles examined in depth plus an additional 200 titles reviewed for supplemental coverage

• Pharmaceutical, chemical and agrochemical patents are also reviewed to identify records which include synthetic methods

• Over 1 million reactions of which approximately 65,000 cover a method for preparation of a product with identified biological activity

• Adds nearly 45,000 novel and improved reactions annually

Page 10: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

WoS Chemistry Editions

Advantages of JDraw

• Compatible with Windows and Mac

• Compatible with Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari

• No Plug-in required• Copy and paste of from

other chemical drawing packages such as ISIS/Draw or ChemDraw

Search with built-in Accelrys JDraw applet

Redesigned search page for easier numerical data searching

Web of Knowledge V5.5 - Enhancements

• Searching Enhancements– Search the ISSN and ISBN values in product Advanced Search

– Search WoK Subject Areas by using the Advanced Search field tag “SU=”

– Search WoS for WoS Categories using the Advanced Search field tag “WC=” (Undocumented).

Page 13: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

Web of Knowledge V5.5 - Enhancements

• Searching Enhancements (continued)– Author Finder improved to allow multiple initials to be queried and

specify exact matches.

– Each product can now be searched using its own unique ID value through the Advanced and General search (e.g., WoS – Accession Number).

Page 14: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

• Display Enhancements– Display and output the product’s unique record ID value

– Search Aids, Refine, and Analyze will only present names in standard TR form (Last name, Initials) but users can still search full name.

Web of Knowledge V5.5 - Enhancements

Page 15: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

• Display Enhancements (continued)– Added text on Cited Reference Search “Step 2” (index

lookup) to indicate where record view is

Web of Knowledge V5.5 - Enhancements

Page 16: Web of Knowledge UPDATE – February 2012

• Link Enhancements

– Support image-based linking (Smart OpenURL) option for Ex Libris (SFX) and OCLC (WorldCat Links Manager)

– Link to the CABI eBook collections– CAB eBooks Current file 2008-current

– CAB eBooks Archive 2005-2007

– CAB eBooks Archive file 2000-2004

– CAB eBooks Agriculture file

– CAB eBooks Animal & Veterinary file

– CAB eBooks Environment file

– CAB eBooks Human, Food, Nutrition file

– CABeBooks Leisure and Tourism

– CABeBooks Plant Sciences

– Provide free links to the JSTOR Early Journal Content Collection

• In early September 2011, JSTOR enabled free access to the EJC Collection, comprised of over 500,000 articles from 200 journals published prior to 1923 in the United States (and prior to 1870 elsewhere). There is a coverage overlap (journals) between Web of Science and the EJC of 141 titles; please see the worksheet ‘Early Collection + WoS’ in the Excel file early_collection_wos.xlsx for more details).

•

• The addition of links to the EJC content will expand the full text linking capabilities of the Web of Science and enhance the value of the older records contained within the Century of Science/Century of Social Science.

•

• Relevant URLs:

• JSTOR announcement: http://about.jstor.org/participate-jstor/individuals/early-journal-content • EJC title list: http://about.jstor.org/sites/default/files/jstor-ejc_title_2011-09-12.3.pdf

•

• Note: This will be made part of the ‘freelinks’ collection that is available to all customers. This collection consists of Open Access journals that have no embargo period for free access, about 1,000 titles.

•

• When a new customer is setup by the Web Entitlements group, they automatically give the customer ‘freelinks’ and ‘doisource_int’ which a link’s button on all journals.

•

• The only time we remove ‘freelinks’ is when we add an OpenURL since the OpenURL will cover all of the available freelinks and by keeping this active, will show a second button on many articles.

– L Feature 17: Provide links to the eight CABI eBook collections from CABI on WoK for mutual subscribers.
