Digital Contents: Specific Areas and Resources

It is changing both the face of research and the ways in which libraries provide materials and services to their users.

Digital library is organized in four categories:

• Web Sites

• Content developed by the school library

• School library—developed interactive services

• Fee-based electronic resources

Web Sites

• this category can be extensive or as limited as the school librarian would refer

• The tendency was to include anything that looked remotely good.

• It also loans itself to a choice between site adaptation and adoption.

Web sites adding value to a digital library:

• Use full-text sites• Tailor the reference sites to the age of your

students.• Include age-appropriate primary sources.• Provide interactive sites.• Include instructional interactive sites.• Feature visual and auditory based sites.

Locally Developed Material

The challenge of the creation of the digital library is making the library-developed content attractive and accessible.

Specific types of library developed content:

• General introductory information about the school library.

• Policies and procedures developed by the library and approved by the governing body.

• Descriptions of special programs the school library has.

• Bibliographies and reading lists.

• Web quests and library skill units.• Forms for the faculty to use to request

services.• Reference services and term paper assistance.• Your periodical holding lists.• Assistance on student and faculty Web site

development.

School Library—Developed interactive Services

• these types of services are difficult to construct and even harder to maintain.

Types of interactive services :

• Electronic reference assistance.• Online request forms.• Interlibrary loan.• Library material requests and hold requests.• Reservation forms for class or library

instruction use of the school library.• Multimedia booking services.

Electronic Reference Services

an absolute necessity they be available for home use.

Type of subscription of electronic resources:

• OPAC.• Periodical databases.• Trial subscriptions to databases.• Database search services.• Online general encyclopedias• Subject specific database• Educational portals.
