Faculty & Staff News Congratulations to Dean Ann Brill, who has been inducted into the KU Women's Hall of Fame, which is sponsored by the Emily Taylor Center for Women and Gender Equity. Associate Dean Scott Reinardy's research on burnout among women newspaper journalists received a mention on Romenesko, Poynter.org, and Phys.org, among others. The research will be presented at the International Communication Association conference May 21-25. The second edition of Reinardy's book, "The Essentials of Sports Reporting and Writing," has been published by Routledge. The book's co-author is University of Florida Professor Wayne Wanta. Assistant Professor Jerry Crawford spoke recently to the Howard University Preparing Future Faculty Program. He addressed doctoral students from several disciplines, including history, physics, pharmacy, education, journalism, mathematics and engineering regarding how to best make the decision to enter academia at Research I or teaching institutions. As KU's Faculty Fellow for Diversity & Equity, Crawford was asked by PFF to facilitate possible collaboration between KU and several PFF institutions. Crawford shared with PFF KU's Bold Aspirations strategic plan and provided contact information for all schools and units on campus. Professor Chuck Marsh, Eileen Hawley, Matt Tidwell and Tom Volek, associate dean for undergraduate studies, are the teaching faculty for the strategic communications portion of the Mount Oread Leadership Series, which is a new professional development instructional series designed for U.S. Army command leadership personnel and corporate executives from major corporations. The J- School faculty will lead two days of intensive instruction as they coach participants in communications models, audience analysis, message development and crisis communications. Kuegler teaches a class called Big Data and Database Marketing at the Edwards Campus. The session will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 303 Stauffer-Flint. Lunch will be provided. If you are interested, RSVP to Kerry Navinskey at [email protected] by Wednesday morning. Associate Professor Tien Lee gave two research talks April 10 in Chengdu, China. At Chengdu Sports University, he discussed sports communication research at KU and in the United States. At Sichuan University, he talked about how to publish in academic journals. Associate Professor Genelle Belmas presented her paper "Is Imitation Really the Sincerest Form of Flattery? Tracing Copyright Law in Appropriation Art” on April 3 at the Popular Culture Association’s annual conference in New Orleans. She and a colleague are evaluating the fair use doctrine in light of recent court decisions, and they are recommending how the doctrine could be modified to take into account the artistic and social commentary elements of art by appropriation artists who have been called to defend against copyright violation claims. Dale L. Puckett, 1966 J-School graduate, visited AssistantProfessor Jerry Crawford's J636 Documentary class. Puckett gave a

presentation on how to take compelling still photography and the

proper way to sequence interesting video. Puckett gave examples of

storytelling through different media platforms. The presentation

allowed students to learn Nikon, Canon and iPhone skills. Puckett also

discussed how to use video editing in Final Cut Pro, Lightroom and

Photoshop. 

Susan Hinds, account manager for Morningstar Communications, will

speak to the University of Kansas Ad Club at 7 p.m. on April 14.

Hinds, a 2007 J-School graduate, will present "The Pathway to Great

Messaging and the Four-Channel Media Model followed by a Q&A
