Resting is something we often crave but do not seem quite often enough to receive. We talk about it. Every now and again we see a rare individual who has mastered the art of giving themselves plenty of time to rest day in and day out. These creatures might choose to rest by taking short naps or reading daily. They do not over-schedule them- selves or run to-do lists longer than their arms. Allowing pockets of time betweenactivities to laugh and have a snack or just peer out into nature is like breathing in and out for them. Some of these folks even sleep like a rock every night!
God designed us to work but just as much, to be creatures who rest. As we look at the second half of summer, how could you and I “walk” in the Lord Jesus’ rest in our everyday lives? After all, didn’t our Lord and Savior command us to rest?
In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus speaks clearly on the matter:
28 "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
When we walk literally with the Lord Jesus and not in front of Him or behind Him, we have rest.
In Christ’s Joy & Love,
Sister Vanessa

The tie-dyed tee“I tend to find something to love about almost everything—from the high-school sneakers I wore 20 years ago to my beloved tie-dye T-shirt I made when I was 15. But my sentimental streak also causes a big clutter problem, which drives my very organized husband, Matt, crazy.“So when the weather got warmer this year, Matt begged me to donate any clothes I hadn’t worn in the past two years. And after much hemming and hawing—especially over my tie-dyed masterpiece—I finally dropped off four huge bags of ‘oldies but goodies’ at a local homeless shelter. “A few weeks later, I was walking in the park near our house and spotted a woman sitting on a bench, surrounded by her belongings. She took off her jacket, and to my surprise, she was wearing my tie-dyed T-shirt. ‘I love that shirt!’ I called out to her, my heart soaring that my colorful shirt had found a new home. She beamed and replied, ‘I love it, too.”
“Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed else like a flower cut from its life giving roots, it will wither and die.”---Dwight D. Eisenhower
During this year’s celebration of Independence Day, let us all take time to reflect on the freedoms we have in the United States. Give thanks to God for all that he has given us and that we may remain free with all the liberties our forefathers worked and fought so hard to obtain for us. May we continue to strive to work together to keep our Country strong.
Her Own Special Grace
“Teaching Sunday school to the 5-year-olds at our church is one of the highlights of my week. With two kids grown, I forget how little ones can sometimes sound just like sassy grown-ups—like the time we were learning about praying before meals and being grateful for all we have. “I asked the children if they pray before eating, and most of them said yes, until the question fell on a little blond sweetheart with freckles and pigtails. ‘Do you pray before you eat dinner, Sophie?’ 1 asked. ‘No,’ she replied. Surprised, I asked her why not. She shrugged her tiny shoulders and said, ‘We don’t need to pray—my mommy’s a good cook! I do if Daddy’s cooking, though!’”.
