How to Access and Implement Dental Tray Setup Activities in MindTap:A Quick Start Guide for Instructors

What is Dental Tray Setup?

Dental Tray SETUP is an application in the MindTap for Dental Assisting: A Comprehensive Approach that provides a simulated experience setting up dental trays. Dental Tray Setup assesses students on their ability to correctly identify and place instruments on a tray for various procedures so that students can become successful dental assistants.

What are the features and benefits?

· Pre-made tests: 10 off-the-shelf dental tray setup tests

· Dental tray customization: Create your own customized tray setups using any of the instruments that come with the product

· Instrument nicknames: Assign nicknames to instruments to account for regional or institutional differences in instrument names

· Easy grading: Automatic grading and feedback

How are students graded?

· For pre-made dental tray setups, students will be graded against the pre-determined instrument placement; for instructor-created or customized tray setups, students will be graded against what you have identified as correct instrument placement

· Students can earn a total of 3 points per placed instrument as follows:

· 1 point for choosing the correct instrument

· Students must earn this point in order to be eligible for the next 2 points

· 1 point for placing the instrument in the correct location on the tray

· Students must earn this point in order to be eligible for the next 1 point

· 1 point for correctly orienting the instrument (i.e. tip facing away from the dentist)

· If a student adds an additional instrument to the tray that is not needed, the program will add 3 points to the total number of points possible for the tray setup, and will give the student 0/3 for the unneeded instrument

· Students receive an overall percentage on each tray setup based on the total points correct divided by the total possible points

How do I create my own Dental Tray Setup activities?

To fully customize your own dental tray activities, you can nickname instruments, create your own dental tray setups, and then create tests with your dental tray setups.

1. Click the InQuizitive (IQ) application icon on the MindTap app dock.

2. Select the Dental Tray Setup option from the dropdown menu and click LAUNCH

2. (Optional) Assign nicknames to instruments by clicking 1. RENAME INSTRUMENTS. Comment by Debbie Bordeaux: Renumber the steps starting here

3. (Optional) On the Rename Instruments page, you can provide a nickname for each instrument by entering the nickname in the field to the right of the instrument name. If you do not want to provide a nickname for the instrument, then leave the field blank. Once you have finished renaming your instruments, click Save at the bottom of the screen. Any dental trays you create will now call the instrument by the nickname you have assigned. Once you have clicked Save, you will be redirected to the Tests tab.

4. Next, create your dental tray by clicking 2. NEW TRAY/QUESTION.

5. To create a dental tray, make sure the My Questions tab is selected (highlighted in blue).

6. Then click ADD QUESTION.

7. Choose the question type Dental Tray from the dropdown menu.

8. Create a dental tray title by typing in the textbox below Title. Create any additional instructions for students by typing in the textbox below Instructions. This information will display to the student when they take the test.

9. Create the correct setup for the dental tray by dragging instruments from the Instruments menu onto the tray. Place the instruments in the correct location. An instrument can be moved at any time by clicking it and dragging it to a new location. Note that the location of the Dentist and the Dental Assistant are shown to assist you in correctly placing the instruments. The Instruments menu collapses while you are placing the instrument. To reopen the Instruments menu, click the Instruments icon.

10. The toolbar above the dental tray allows you to rotate and stack/unstack instruments, as well as to remove instruments or reset the entire dental tray.

a. Using the Rotate buttons, rotate the instrument so that the tips and/or handles are facing the correct direction (away from/toward the dentist/dental assistant)

b. Using the Stack button, stack instruments if needed. You also have the option to place instruments side-by-side if the instruments should not be stacked. To place 2 of the same instrument side-by-side, simply drag and place 1 instrument from the Instruments menu, then choose the same instrument again and drag and place it next to the other instrument.

Remember that students will be graded against the dental tray you create. For each instrument you place, students should also place the same instrument, in the same location, and oriented in the same way.

11. Create feedback to display to the student after they complete setting up the dental tray by typing in the textbox below Answer Rationale.

12. When you are finished, click SAVE.

13. A “Question Saved Successfully” message will appear. You can now click on the Tests tab to create a test.

14. You can now add the dental tray you created to a test by clicking 3. New Test.

15. On the Create Test page, you will:

· Enter a Test Name

· Enter a Time Limit for the test (leave blank if you do not want a time limit)

· Choose whether you want the answer to show to the student after each question (a full dental tray setup counts as one question). If you choose No, the student won’t see the correct answer until after test completion.

Click CREATE when you are done.

16. Next, choose the questions you want to include in the test by clicking SELECT QUESTIONS.

17. Choose pre-created dental trays on the Question Bank tab, or choose dental trays you have created on the My Questions tab. (Note: On the Question Bank tab, choose the “Dental Tray” link.) Click the Add button next to each question you want to add. When you are done selecting questions, click the X in the upper right-hand corner.

18. Click UPDATE TEST to save your test.

19. You can now see your test in the list of Assignable Activities on the Tests tab. Close the IQ app, and proceed to the next step to put your test on the learning path.

20. To put your test on the learning path, click the Add Activity icon.

21. Choose InQuizitive Assessments from the list of activity types. (You may have to scroll.)

22. You will see the test you just created in the list of selectable activities. Click Select to select the test. Once you have assigned a test, it will no longer appear in this list.

23. On this page, you can rename the activity, set a description, and set grading parameters. Grading parameters include the following:

· Gradeable: Does this count towards a grade?

· Max Score: How many points is this activity worth?

· Max Attempts: How many times can students attempt this activity?

· Score Strategy: Which score feeds your gradebook (most recent, average, or best)?

Once you have finished configuring your test, click Create.

24. On the next page, choose the dates the activity is available for students to take and where you would like the activity placed on the MindTap Learning Path. When you are done, click Save.

25. Your activity will now appear in the MindTap.
