Abstract : The results of a survey conducted in 1963-7 on incidence of pests and diseases on the widely-grown rice cv. in the kharif [summer monsoon] and rabi [winter] seasons in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh showed that the incidence varied considerably in different years and that the highest incidence during the growth period occurred about 1 month before the harvest; yellow stem borer Scirpophaga (=Tryporyza) incertulas was the major pest and Helminthosporium oryzae [Cochliobolus miyabeanus], Pyricularia oryzae and Neovossia hórrida the major diseases. The average loss in paddy yields from pests and diseases was 10.6% in the late-maturing cv. in the kharif season and 14.4% in the intermediate-maturing cv. in the rabi season. The average avoidable loss in yield by using the recommended plant protection schedule was estimated to be 76 and 204 kg/ha in the kharif and rabi seasons, respectively; the schedule was economical only in the rabi season.
