Topic: capacity(the measure of the amount a container can hold)- Find a range of containers. Discuss and order them from holds most- holds least or vice versa. Use language like

full, more/less than half full, empty, nearly empty, half full etc. Once you have ordered and estimated, check whether the children have ordered the containers correctly. For example, you can check by using water and a jug to see which held the most. Discuss if child was surprised by any of them.

- Find a container that holds more and less than a set container. Then find things that hold more/less than 1 litre. Sort containers into categories: holds less than/more than/about 1 litre. Show your child that litres come in different shapes; a short wide container might hold the same or even more than a taller container.

Page 2: standrewsnslucan.iestandrewsnslucan.ie/.../12/First-Class-Activities-4.docx  · Web view17 hours ago · Investigate the capacity of containers using water – it might be a good

- Investigate the capacity of containers using water – it might be a good idea to do this outside or at the kitchen sink. If water is not an option try sand, rice or something that doesn’t leave empty space. See how many spoons/cups/bowls fill a container.

- Choosing the best non-standard measurement – would it be best to measure the water in the bath using a spoon, an eggcup, a jug or a bucket? Remind them this means the one you would need the least amount of to fill the bath. In this case it would be the bucket.

- Create a fruit juice drink using litres.- See book as a guide. (Planet Maths 1st class pg 104-106 – accessible free on
