WELCOME TO OUR GUESTSFriend, welcome to St. John! This booklet will lead you through today’s service. Following the service, please introduce yourself to Pastor Cosgrove. We pray God would use today’s worship service to touch your heart with His grace.

HOLY COMMUNIONWe invite baptized Christians who acknowledge their sinfulness, trust in Christ as their Savior and recognize the real presence of Christ’s Body and Blood in the bread and wine for the forgiveness of their sins to join us for the Lord’s Supper. As you approach the communion rail please remain standing until the pastor says, “Welcome to the Lord’s table.” At that point you may kneel if you are able. If you are unable to kneel, it is ok to remain standing. As you leave the table exit by the outside aisles on either side of the Sanctuary. Those who choose not to commune may come forward and signal their desire to receive a prayer of blessing by crossing their hands over their heart. Children who have received instruction about The Lord’s Supper may commune.

Because we are “family” we welcome and encourage the attendance of small children in our worship services. Children can learn to worship Jesus at a very early age, especially when we involve them in the service and explain to them what we are doing. We also understand that children will, at times, become restless. If your child becomes excessively restless and creates a commotion that might be detrimental to the worship of others, please use any of the following to comfort or calm your child: the rocking chairs at the rear of the church; a “Busy Bag” hanging in the narthex; the narthex itself or an adjacent hallway; the nursery – in the Fellowship Hall (ask the ushers for directions).

Children’s Bulletins are also available for our younger worshippers. Please see any usher for a Children’s Bulletin.Hearing assistance units and large print bulletins are available from an usher.

THANK YOU to the Volunteers who served us today. (please refer to the announcements for their names)

If you have a special PRAYER REQUEST to be included in today’s Prayers, please fill out the blue “Prayer Request” card in the

pew rack and place it in the offering plate as it is passed.

Congregation StandsINVOCATIONP In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.C Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTIONP Let us now make confession of our sins to God, our heavenly Father.C Almighty God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean,

undeserving of Your mercy. We admit that we have sinned against You in countless ways. We have left undone those things we ought to have done; we have done those things we ought not to have done. We sincerely repent of our sins and humbly ask Your grace and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, lead us to change what is sinful in our lives that each day we grow in righteousness and godly living to the glory of Your holy name.

P God has promised forgiveness to those who repent and turn to Him in contrition. In kindness and love, He promises pardon, life, and salvation because of the atoning sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I declare God’s forgiveness upon you for all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. As you believe, so may it be.

C Amen.

WORD

PRAYER OF THE DAYP The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Lord of time and God of history, we ask You to keep our nation and

its leaders under Your care. It is by Your grace and blessing alone that we can know peace and freedom. Direct and lead us to live justly with our neighbors, peaceably in our communities, and joyfully in our land, seeking the common good. This we ask through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.

C Amen.

Congregation Is SeatedEPISTLE Romans 7:1-13

1Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. 4Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit. 7What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. 13Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.

L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

15Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle [Jesus] in his talk. 16And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.C Praise to You, O Christ.

APOSTLES' CREEDC I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
